It emphasizes that women can overcome the obstacles and eventually become successful in scientific Fields once assigned solely to covered wide Field the special report was pre pared for the department s Yomen s Bureau by Alice Griffiths a former librarian who spent six weeks on research for the 41 Page document. Mrs. Griffiths a 1937 graduate from the University of Toronto in his tory and Library science is the wife of Ottawa broadcaster Stu Art Griffiths. They have two sons one in University one in High school. She travelled to Montreal Toronto and Kingston ont and interviewed dozens of women in the scientific Field including astronomers chemists geologists physicists mathematicians and librarians to learn about their work How they entered it and the difficulties and possibilities of their jobs. Mrs. Griffiths finds that women s traditional role plays a Large part in the difficulties they meet in the science world. The fact that society differentiates Between what is Man s work and what is woman s work May contribute to the feeling that science is not for girls. From birth society tends to impose certain patterns of be Havior and character on both boys and girls. A girl is consid ered different if she pursues an interest in science and chooses it for a the report says a recent sur vey conducted in several Amer ican universities found that successful women scientists usually come from two contrasting kinds of Homes. Part of her Job is to talk while she works explaining to the housewife what she can do to operate her stove properly. Before taking technical train ing miss Duncanson used to travel with servicemen to talk to women while the men worked. But she says women listen to her More readily now that she is doing the repairs. Mrs. Grif Ohtis a former librarian is a graduate of the University of Toronto. Her report Emp hashed that women cart overcome the obstacles facing them in scientific Fields once reserved for men. Ridge if raising a family is part of it very few women Are Able to continue to work on a full time mrs. Griffiths concludes that women who have successful scientific careers while raising a family Are Only Able to do so if four factors Are present. These factors seem general enough to apply to All working mothers in any Field. Need jobs that Are ice to their traditional role As wives and mothers an import ant Factor. Status disregarded women with highly educated and wealthy parents who were inclined to grow up in an atmosphere of Security and encouragement made Good Scien jets because they and their cared Little about the traditional status of women. On the other hand women who grew up in families where he parents had had Little Edu National Opportunity were at rated to sciences with prac tical Down to Earth Appeal. The american study concluded that the girls at the of Are secure enough to be different while Bright girls from Homes where the parents iad limited educational opportunities Are not influenced by he need to maintain a certain status mrs. Griffiths says the prac ical difficulties of physical la Jor and unprotected isolation associated with Many careers n the physical sciences Are be ing largely overcome and Are Likely to be less apparent in the future. Since All the Earth sciences Are linked in one Way or an other to the practice of engineering so the practical difficult ies encountered by women Are concentrated in the engineering Field. But Garnet Page Secretary of the engineering Institute of Anada told the women s Bur eau researcher opportunities for women in Many areas of engineering Are increasing particularly As they become More sophisticated and less of the traditional outdoor Type of faced with dilemma perhaps the most important dilemma facing the woman who wants a career is whether she can Combine her work with marriage. The labor department report stresses that maintaining a marriage and a career in Sci ence is particularly difficult for a woman. She must keep up to Date in her work and As the develop ments in science Are so dynamic she can do so Only if she is constantly at work.
