Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 26, 1964, Winnipeg, Manitoba
12 Winnipeg free press saturday december 26, 1964 Slop the Slaughter sir we would like to bring to your attention the illegal killing of Deer which our party encountered during the recent Deer season. The following is a summary of the indications of illegal Deer killing from which we Drew our conclusions in scouting for signs of Deer late sunday afternoon nov Ember 15, the Day before sea son opening we found fresh tire tracks leading in around and through All Bluffs and Meadows in the area in which we intended to Hunt. On Mon Day morning we located the car which had made these tracks. It was an old stripped Clown 194 Ford equipped with Snow tires and chains. There was evidence that shooting had been done from the Back of it. Three sets of footprints led away from the deserted car. Apparently it had boiled Over and seized up. We followed its tracks Back and Forth through the Bush and concluded that they were the same ones that we had seen the Day before. The t of. Lowing Clay we found indications in the Snow that this car had been hauled away during the night by a tractor. This vehicle was definitely used sometime on sunday november 15, before the season opened because a heavy Snow fall had fallen during the previous night and the tracks were All made after this snowfall. Prior to the open season we had obtained several re ports from local Telephone Crews of the Large population of Deer which they had seen in the area. Each week As the season Drew nearer they noted that there seemed to be fewer and fewer Deer around. They also heard talk of local residents getting their Deer before the City Hunt the proprietor of the local hotel agreed that he had noticed a Sharp decline in the Deer population and that he had also heard conversation along the same line As the Telephone men had re ported. Out of approximately Twenty Hunters who stayed at the hotel in the three Days that we were there not one Hunter bagged a Deer and ail re ported stories similar to ours. Very few had even sighted a Deer in spite of fairly num Erous tracks in the area. On one Day we met a Man presumably a Farmer driving through the Bush and Meadows on his tractor with a loaded Rifle ready to Fife at any Deer he jumped. He did this continuously the whole time that we were in that area. In this same area we later found a Large untagged five Point Buck hidden in the Bush. We returned later in the Day to find that the animal had been butchered on the spot and removed. The head legs and hide were All that remained. The few Deer that we did see during the three Days acted extremely wild and flushed far out of Range. We have never observed Deer which were so wild and frightened. They had obviously been subjected to extreme Hunting pressure. In conversation with a local Man we were informed that he had found the remains of two Deer on his property on sunday november 15, which had been killed subsequent to the snowfall on saturday night. We Hope that from the above you will agree with the conclusions that we Drew. We can see no use in restricting the length of the season and allowing Only forked antlered Bucks to be taken in most areas of the province As Long As this situation exists. Why should the City Hunter abide by All the rules pay for All the licences and spend a great Deal of Money for food Gaso line and accommodation in these outlying districts if the local residents Are allowed to get away with year round shooting without even buying a licence if any City Hunter was caught practising these methods he would lose his car gun and be heavily fined. Why can t these same restrict danger sir with the recent Snow Falls necessitating the blowing of the City streets a danger Ous situation which occurs annually has Arisen again. I refer to the Ridge of Snow which the plows leave on the boulevards. This is especially hazardous in the residential districts where the Small Fry mostly preschoolers just can t help sliding on these Lovely Snowbank. Where else can a kid slide in Winnipeg which is As Flat As our pocket books now however it is far from humorous for the parents of these youngsters and for the Motorist who has this additional worry of watching that a Little one does not slide out in front of his car. What can be done about this before we have another traffic tragedy on a City Street Mary d. Borthistle Grosse Isle tons be enforced on local residents of these Rural areas to add a further frustrating Climax to our Hunt the first thing that we heard when we returned to the City was a Story of some Hunters shooting on the saturday and sunday before the season opened and slaughtering Twenty three Deer of either sex. As unbelievable As this sounded it made us even More disgusted. We tried unsuccessfully to Trace Down the source of this information and obtain names and further de tails. In closing we would like to say that although we were disgusted by the above we still greatly enjoyed the privilege of being Able to Hunt in our great outdoors and the above will not deter us from returning for another try next year. However we do Hope for the Sake of our future generations that some thing further will be done to protect our Deer population. T. W. So Ham a. F. Hartley r. Sotham. Winnipeg. Dizzy ghastly advice ghosts sir from the Public Gal Lery of the commons during the witching hours of the monday tuesday closure de Bate one seemed to see be Hind the shoulders of the meditative opposition Leader Diefenbaker the ghosts of sir John a. Harries transit Tom sir the readers of your paper May be interested in the following comments received by the labor election committee in reply to an and opposing an increase in Tran sit fares which appeared in your paper on tuesday de Cember 8th. These comments sire Only a selection of scores of replies received from transit Pat Rons. If the fares go up again i m going to learn How to drive also my two teen agers. Higher fares less riders where will it irate Mother. Bus transit Cost per month for my family what More do you want or. Bonny Inkster blvd. Resi Dent. I make per week so can t afford higher transit woman Patron. Another reply came from a 77-year-old Agnes. St. Resident. Raise rates lower Revenue Why bleed the pensioners who have to bus it while the metro salaried people drive by in their big we Are both 73 and since the fare was raised to 15 cents straight we walk mostly and previous to that we Rode a St. Vital couple. Similar replies from worried citizens were read to metro Council by Alderman 2uken during his presentation last thursday on behalf of a Dele gation of metro citizens. Or. Bonnycastle told our delegation that metro Council had not decided to raise fares but he hastened to add that this did t mean that metro would t raise fares. In the face of this evasive reply the Only real Guaran tee that no fare increase will take place rests with an aroused Public opinion. Winnipeg Don Currie time wasted sir i am strongly against advertisements appearing on . Around Christmas time it seems most of the toys advertised Are the most expensive ones. They make the toys sound twice As Good As they really Are. Half of. A television program s time is completely wasted on advertisements. Every show has to be brought to you by fool thing i should like this non sense to be stopped. Winnipeg Dianne Loeppky aged 10 vandals sir i was saddened to read recent report of Vandal ism in our metro Parks but to Many of us in fort Garry the most glaring Circum stance of vandalism has been committed by the director of metro Parks himself i.e., the Clearing of All Underbush in Crescent drive Park through rather coyly self admitted ignorance of Flora and Fauna and failure to con sult people who could have advised him on these matters. Many sex employees of the Winnipeg. Parks Board and members of the natural history society would have been Only too Happy to participate and the chairman of metro himself is a natural historian and conservationist. In Crescent drive Park every wild Plum tree Saskatoon Hawthorne High Bush Cranberry choked Erry Etc., As Well As hundreds of Large and Small elms Oak Ash and others have been removed and burned sometimes Leav ing unsightly stumps. Wild Flowers too have been Ruth Lessly burned out. Here was a Good Chance for the director of Parks to leave a Lovely wild life Sanctuary. I nope that the majority of River Bank property does re main in private ownership because with officials like this in charge future natural historians and botanists May have to go onto private property to find examples of Birds Trees and Flowers found in their text books. Fort Garry name withheld the French sir the undoing of the Bri Tish North America act and the making of a new Constitution Are matters too serious to be left to the politicians. It is a matter of such import Ance that we the people All of us need to take study and thought and time for a considered opinion. I am not against the accommodation of the i am against the accommodation of the French to the Point of no return. I am afraid of changes that will give us All the disadvantages of separa Tion and none of the advantages. With a divided loyalty we could find ourselves a nation unable to function As a nation. I am tired of the tricks or treats speeches of Quebec politicians i m tired of the Way political or factions of political parties woo Quebec receiving or being denied her favors. Can we afford to give Quebec this bargaining Opportunity if we were United in our knowledge of affairs we could put a Stop to this non sense and Force the parties to cease jockeying for position there. If we understood the matter of the Constitution we would know where we could and where we could not give the French their concessions. I am afraid of changes that would give us All the disadvantages of separation and none of the advantages. What have the Best Legal minds in our country to say on a new Constitution where Are the Learned books on this subject where Are the Maga Zine articles serious and above the Brash trial bal loons for a political sort of thing we have now i want to know about them. I want to hear discussion and be present at dialogue on this important subject. I did not elect a provincial Premier to make decisions in the Federal Field nor did he Campaign on such a platform. As for the Federal politicians judging by their past behaviour i very much suspect of seeing issues from a Small closed party group while their rank and file into toeing the line whether they agree or not. Therefore the opinions of party persons is hardly Worth two pins to me at this time. Let us keep the politicians out of this until we have had the Opportunity to study the new Constitution. Let us Stop them from pressuring us into believing that changes must be made in a hurry to meet deadlines of their own setting. Even if it takes months and the fall of several govern ments it would be Worth it to come up with the right answer the Best answer for us All now and for the years to come. Galiano Island . Mrs Annie doozy a so called critic sir i am writing with re Gard to your so called music critic or. Ken Winters who is possibly one of the worst of his kind in North America. To begin with let me say that .1 am not a musical intellect although i do know and appreciate that which is Good. Perhaps eighty per cent of All concert goers Are in this category we recognize and the free press Wel comes letters from its readers. Correspondents must be concise All let ters Are subject to edit ing for length. Letters bearing pen names or initials will be printed Only when in the editor s judgment anonymity is essential. Every letter whether the writer wishes his name used or not must be signed and must show the return address. The free press cannot to re turn unused Byron jams a full meal indians sir it is with sadness that i have read of the closing of the offices of the National in Dian Council and their disbandment of a committee. Two years ago in Winnipeg i was Happy to find such eager interested people working to make a better future for indians. Such Fine people As Marion Meadmore Jean Cut hand chief John Tootoosis chief Richard Pine Are of the highest ability. It was my Hon or and privilege to raise funds for this organization which was virtually penniless when i joined. With Grants Forth coming the achievements of the Council looked More cer Tain. What went wrong the founding group most of them without Indian status but of Indian origin failed to recognize that the indians needed a Broad program of development and welfare. In the minds of some was resent ment of christianity Admira Tion of Black muslims forc ing Iroquois to speak French refusal to account for monies trying to Settle Indian land claims for Cash with Large bonuses for lawyers including one lawyer then under indictment and who has since been convicted and finally a frivolous program. My quiet opposition to All miss Horn a victim this was by requesting them to respect the Constitution and to adopt a welfare program. I was against indians being Given a few dollars a year to Settle their land claims. So in Winnipeg a Kangaroo court found me guilty of something or other and after that More imagined charges were Laid each Day. At the Garden River conference they tried to shout me Down. At no time have i Ever raised my voice. I have never threatened anybody. My statements Are All backed by facts and this was the end of the Council. This Marks a new Day for indians on reserves who must realize that our land is protected by our refusal to be come controlled by provincial governments. We must insist on payment in lands for our ancient land claims. There must be a crash program to plan and develop Indian communities for better housing and medical care training and finally education. If million dollars is spent now i predict that in 35 years the indians of can Ada will be self supporting and with our higher Standard of living the High birthrate will drop. At the present rate Manitoba population will be 55 per cent Indian in 100 years which is a serious matter. If you study All of the implications so Grieve not for the National Indian Council. Do not consider it a Triumph for me but a Victory for truth and Good there is a Day coming As indians develop a on no leadership on All reserves and we will move ahead rapidly with the Federal government if the program is big enough Strong enough to pro Duce results. Kahn Tinct Horn Caughnawaga Reserve one. Enjoy Quality instinctively. Obviously or. Winters has never Learned to do this. Surely the recent enthusiastic approval of three thousand people after having heard the consummate artistry of or. Byron Janis cannot been tirely wrong. The Job of a critic is of course to criticize from an objective Point of View not from the Depths of one s own personal taste. Also a critic must be Able to give whole hearted credit where it is due without any detracting after remarks or Back handed compliments. A critic must at times be cruel but he must never never forget to tem per his remarks with a Basic underlying graciousness o f spirit. In my opinion or. Winters fails in every aspect in his Job As a critic. He is instead merely a columnist who fills his column with just so Many words. It is Sarcas tic egotistical uninformative and at times rather in coherent. As far As the Byron Janis concert is concerned i feel that we in Winnipeg were accorded a rare privilege one we May never experience again. It was indeed a con Certo As it was always intended to be. This is what we As concert goers paid to hear and this is what thoroughly delighted us. The individual concertos were chosen with care and per formed excellently by both soloist and orchestra. If or. Winters did not wish to hear All three of them perhaps he should have arrived after the intermission. As it is his column fallowing the perform Ance did Little to further his own name or that of Winnipeg As a Centre of the cultural arts in Canada. In closing let me say that although or. Winters May be the compleat musician he is far from being a satisfactory critic. Certainly he must have within him the capacity to do better. St. James Elinor Petrie gourmet sir it was with some Dis appointment that i read or. Ken Winter s critique of the december 15 concert presented by the Winnipeg symphony orchestra featuring guest artist Byron Janis. I sought in vain for some mention of the Fine performance Given by the orchestra under the direction of Victor Feldbrill. Where was the reference to the standing ovation Given the guest artist or. Janis by most of the three thousand appreciative members of the audience. The presentation of three piano concertos by a pianist is somewhat of an historic occasion in the mus ical history of our City no comment Given this. But what do we have a Short dissertation on the evils of Over medication and glut Tony. Now unlike or. Win ters a professional member of the i must classify myself As merely an Amateur concertgoers but i enjoyed the evening immensely and if the loud outbursts of applause which emanated from All sections of the auditorium were any criterion so did most of the other three thousand per sons present. If the enjoyment of an excellent pianist s interpretation of three concertos constitutes gluttony then i must plead guilty however it was a most delightful feast. Winnipeg j. T. Lituack Oral danger sir As a pharmacist and a member of the Council of the Manitoba pharmaceutical association i am unaware that any complaints have been received by this association from physicians or govern ment authorities concerning the unlawful dispensing of prescriptions for Oral contraceptives. Oral contraceptives by the regulations of the fed eral food and drug depart ment require a medical prescription before they can be dispensed by a pharmacist. Physicians and the Public alike realize the prominent role played by pharmacists in minimizing the harmful overuse of drugs by the pub Lic. Unusual Public interest and reports verging on the sensational tend to disturb parents and overemphasize the possible use and abuse of Oral contraceptives by teenagers. Only by carrying out unbiased scientific surveys could the unlawful and harmful use of Oral contraceptives be accurately assessed. Surely a few interviews does not constitute a proper nor do they accurately establish that the use of these prescription drugs is widespread in our Community by teenagers. Until such time As accurate and reliable surveys Are made and until specific in stances of abuse of Oral contraceptives Are documented i will continue to believe that the Public can rely on the professional integrity of physicians and pharmacists. Winnipeg Angus w. Murray before a fall sir the roman Empire fell at its height Napoleon met his Waterloo after destroying half of Europe the ruthless nazi regime was crushed when it had almost overtaken the world. Never truer has been the saying Pride Al ways cometh before a Down in 1759 French Canada was vanquished by the English thanks to Vaudreuil who was t the first or the last haughty hot headed French Man. Old France s feudalism was cast away in Canada. The Milder English criminal Law replaced the harsher French criminal Law. French Canada can be thankful it had Noble englishmen like Murray and Carleton to govern them. Such was not always the Case though. The conscious or Semi conscious attitude of Many an englishman during the past centuries has been one of conquerors of Canada though mildly in the last dec the Over zealousness of or. Diefenbaker and some of his henchmen has probably helped in bringing about the decline and fall of the Union Jack rather than save it blessed Are the Meek for they shall inherit the the French declaration of the rights of Man and the american declaration of in dependence have inspired a new spirit of Freedom which is overtaking the world. The time has come for a new United Canada Strong and free uniting All its members into one Canadian nation whether English French Indian German ukrainian Etc. Winnipeg Andre Letain a padre is a padre Napoleon trouble at Waterloo White red sir As mrs. Norma Sluman noted in her review of five history text books in use in Manitoba these books fied the activities of the White people involved and distorted the part played by the indians. This was accomplished not As often through historical inaccuracies As by strategic omissions. Ellen Simmons dealt with some of these on the editorial Page of this news paper recently. When we find ourselves deploring the treatment of the negroes in the Southern states and of apartheid in South Africa we must remember that we have been guilty and to some extent Are still guilty of the same thing Here in Canada. The True Story of the treatment of the North american Indian by the White in vaders is unknown to the vast majority of the people of Canada. It is a Story of unrelieved tragedy and numerous instances of utter barbarity. In the . There Are officially documented accounts of the Slaughter of entire encamp ments of indians men women and children. How Many of our school history books Tell How Colum bus really treated the indians who had tried to help him do they Tell How Columbus celebrated holidays by Stag ing Indian but Cheries and of How the spaniards killed indians to feed their dogs twelve years from the land ing of Columbus not one in Dian was left in the Bahamas. And the same was True wherever the spaniards went. They wantonly destroyed the Cul Ture and civilization of the incas the Mayas and the aztecs arid they left a Trail of blood and suffering wherever they went. The French dutch and English did t always treat the indians much better. From Canada Del Fuego the White Man taught the indians that no treaty was Sac red no Promise no Friendship a Protection and that might meant right. Where he did t kill him outright the White Man killed his spirit by deriding his culture and mock ing . For his usually tame gods and spirits the White Man substituted a re Ligion whose god was As cruel As he was kind is intolerant As he was forgiving and who had his private torture Cham Ber As we As his the. People Tif West Ger Many have frequently been criticized for failing to teach their school children the truth about Hitler arid the nazi re Gime. When will our children be taught the True Story of what happened to the native population of Canada Winnipeg William g. Brandson sir in recent months the minister of National defence has been Able to accomplish certain changes in the organization of his department. It is Gratifying to see that he has started at the top level and. Is getting rid of surplus senior officers and trying to Weed out the incompetent. This move has been needed for Many years. However at lower Levels a great Deal of duplication exists and should be weeded out without delay. For example 1. The works companies of the Royal Canadian engineers Are Basic units of the army and have been for Many years. Why then i a major Centre like Winnipeg do the air Force maintain a construction engineering Section doing the same work As an. Army works company the existing organization at fort Osborne is quite capable of maintaining both areas. 2. The ordnance corps and army service corps of the army Are Basic units and Well equipped to handle the Supply and distribution of ordnance stores for All three services the service corps at present handles rations for All three so Why can t they handle All motor transport there is Little need for the air Force to have Complete Mobile equipment or Supply sections. The age old service argument that the army Are not familiar with air Force requirements does not ring True. The same catalogue numbers of equipment should be the same for ail services. The United states dept. Of defence standardized All catalogue numbers for their forces so there is no reason Why we can t. 3. The Royal army medical corps is an old established and competent organization greetings sir May i ask for space in your paper to Send Christ Mas greetings and thanks to the Many people in your City who gave so much time and hospitality to the Raf cadets who like myself were in Canada for wartime flight training i was astonished to realize that it is 20 years since i was in Winnipeg and it seemed a particularly appropriate time to recall the kindness i encountered everywhere. In my own Case particularly from or. And mrs. Houston and their Many friends who made each visit to Winnipeg such a pleasure. There must be Many in eng land who recall with nostalgia As i do the Lime we spent in Winnipeg and Wiio i am sure join me in wishing you All a very merry Christmas and a Happy new year. H. P. M. Pat Stanton 1 Law land Farnham Royal Bucks. England John Hirsch impressive work a Fine theatre sir in the past five years i have spent considerable time visiting regional theatres throughout the country see ing their productions and talking to their staffs. I was in Winnipeg this week specifically to see the Manitoba theatre Centre s production of Mother courage and was so impressed that i must write this letter. I Hope everyone in Winnipeg realizes what a unique and invaluable asset they have in the Manitoba theatre Centre. I Don t know where else in the country one could see a play As Consu mately produced As your Mother courage. All of Winnipeg should feel proud and grateful that they have the services of John Hirsch As artistic director of the Centre. I would like to take this Opportunity to thank the people of Winnipeg for Mak ing it possible for a theatre As Good and vital As the Mani Toba theatre Centre to function and grow. Minneapolis Peter Cisler managing director Tyrone Guthrie theatre which has seen a lot of ser vice. While it is agreed that a limited form of integration has taken place among the Medicos More could take place. Why do the army and air Force maintain separate military hospitals in Winnipeg when Eva s Deer Lodge hos Pital is running Well under Fuli capacity any serious cases Are referred to Deer Lodge in any Case. If there is to be a Hospital separate from Deer Lodge then close Down the one at Craf Winnipeg in favor of fort Osborne. A. Why does each service require their own padres military police bands and Cooks a padre is a padre regardless of the color of his uniform the Provost corps have been part of the regular army for years and Are Well skilled and capable military bands Are All the same some just play better than others. As a Veteran ,1 know there is a great Deal of Empire building among the services also a certain amount of Esprit de corps. However none of this should be allowed to impair efficiency. The measures i have suggested would help Cut Down House keeping costs a great Deal leaving More Money available for the Purchase of much needed equipment. Gypsumville j. W. Mccarthy area of profit sir newspaper accounts of the doctors meeting of dec Ember 12 have created the impression that All doctors favor collaboration with private insurance companies in the pro vision of health care. This is false. Official statements by the executive of the Canadian medical association support private insurance companies. But Many doctors regard As morally offensive and on principal Are unalterably opposed to the exploitation of illness As an area of profit for the insurance business. Indeed at its beginning mrs was organized by Doc tors for the sole purpose of providing medical care at considerably less than Normal fees for the Low income groups. In this segment of the population insurance companies were not interested. That mrs has since been diverted from its original aim is regrettable. It has resulted in the medical profession now subsidizing the wealthy and. From the statistic that the wealthier use medical services much More than the poorer the absurd situation exists in mrs whereby the poor Are also subsidizing the wealthy. But these observations do not provide a single reason Why illness should be exploited As an area for the profit of insurance companies. Winnipeg Mother of five dental lab sir i write with regard to a letter of saturday Decem Ber 12. I was employed by a dental Laboratory that worked Only for the dentists for a number of years but was forced to leave in the end because of the salary. The manager was very fair and told me that due to the prices paid by the dentists for Den Tures he could not meet the salary that was offered to me by a Dent Urist. As i am inter ested in my livelihood and in As much As t have had experience in both types dental laboratories. I feel there Are some truths to be known. It is True that the Manitoba denture clinic has no hidden prices. An upper and lower set of dentures Are but what Are the prices in a private dentist s office May be which i to anywhere upwards of the Manitoba denture clinic came into being a few years ago when the struggle be tween the dentists and the de naturists came to a head. My question is will it be in operation in the future if the Dent Urist is stopped from practising could it have been a Means to an end another thing that was stated by the dentists is that the dentists subsidize the denture clinic to make possible upper and lower dentures. There is no one subsidizing the Den tourist and he is making a fairly Good living at his prices of to for the same up per and lower dentures. The material used in Mak ing a denture is acrylic More commonly known As Plas the acrylic is All the same so the Cost is the same to All and the Teeth vary a few cents depending if they Are plastic or porcelain so where does the great difference in Price come from anyway to me it would seem logical that it must come in the profit if the Cost is the same.
