Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 5, 1965, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press tuesday january 5, 1965 t. S. Eliot pricked Era s complacency by Glendy cull1gan Washington special tons the importance of t. S. Eliot to 20th Century letters were succinctly indicated several years ago when the concise Cam Bridge history of English literature titled its final chapter the age of t. S. Eliot. Even More than the Nobel prize this implicit accolade conveyed the scope of or. Eliot s achievement. His weight in the scale of his Peers however assumes almost inverse proportion to the volume of his work. All that he published in a half Century of continuous dedication to his Art could be fitted easily on a one foot shelf. It was not the amount of or. Eliot s output but its Quality and its idea Content that made him the major figure in modern Western literature. Or. Eliot s attack on the literary complacency of an earlier generation was two pronged As he influenced writers of his generation both by Precept and example. In his Early poems he first practice what his famous critical essays would later preach a fusion of thought and feeling in poetry. He himself achieved this goal by blending rigid control Over form with dynamic even colloquial language. Although even As an undergraduate at Harvard or. Eliot showed the Bias for All things English which would make him a confirmed expatriate his first poems used vividly Amer ican imagery and his first hearing As a poet came in an american publication. Major event appearance of his poem the love song of j. Alfred Prufrock in the midwestern poetry Magazine in 1915 was at least in retrospect a major event. At the time it took the crusading Zeal of his fellow expatriate Ezra Pound to persuade poetry s editor to accept the work of an eccentric unknown. Or. Eliot s reputation As a critic began soon after with Book reviews in the new statesman and the times literary supplement r e views which have since been called the most arduous critical labor of which detailed record exists Noth ing less than a rethinking of the traditional heritage of English when in 1920 these essays were published in Book form As the sacred Wood they made available a critical Canon which would influence coming generations of read ers and scholars to re evaluate Many writers of the past. Or. Eliot himself demonstrated How this could be done in a subsequent critical homage to John Dryden which deflated the t Aen Paramount reputation Tass sneers at slogan London the so Viet news Agency reported president Johnson s state of the Union message briefly today but direct mention of his expressed Hope that soviet Lead ers can visit the United states. The report said Johnson re marked that the soviet and . Peoples must know each other if they mean to live in peace. Tass noted that the president outlined his plans to build the so called great society and added this pretentious slogan Means the application of a series of measures to improve the education system combat Pov erty reduce unemployment improve medical services liquidate racial discrimination de crease crime and help distressed Cheque bounced Man Given 12-month term a 38-year-old Man has been jailed for 12 months for paying for a woman s Houseboat with a no account Cheque. Clifford Lloyd easy of no fixed address monday pleaded guilty in Winnipeg magistrate s court to a charge of obtaining goods by false pretences. He was sentenced by magistrate i. V. Ubienski. Court was told that dec. 15, easy used a no account Cheque to pay for a woman s Houseboat in a downtown cloth ing shop. Easy was arrested dec. 30. He told police he did t know happened to the Houseboat. Of Milton and substituted for new poets. In the sacred Wood or. Eliot offered two ideas on which much of modern literary criticism is based. He first described poetry As not a turning Loose of emotion but an escape from this pronounce ment paved the Way for the critical decline of romantic ism from which some 19th Century poets have not yet recovered. At the same time he established the concept of the objective correlative which became a Cornerstone of the so called new critic ism in America. By this phrase he Indica Ted that the Only a y to express an emotion in Art is to find a set of objects a situation a Chain of events which shall be the formula for that wide acceptance among scholars of this and other of his concepts led or. Eliot to be called the ancestor of All modern literary criticism a tribute which he incident ally denied before a Large audience at the University of Minnesota in 1956 on one of his rare visits to the United states. Erudite work in essence however or. Eliot was demanding in his pronouncements on poetry that feeling be dramatized rather than described. He demonstrated the potential of his aesthetics in 1922 when the wasteland was first published in a Small literary Magazine edited by or. Eliot himself. This Long exotic and erudite work probably the most influential poem of the 20th Century quickly established his reputation. After 40 years it remains his most generally admired work. Now gospel the poem was highly controversial when first published. Like other important postwar works by English and american writ ers it gave form to the disillusion of the lost Gen which obligingly made or. Eliot its no. 1 Prophet. Or. Eliot s insistence on objectification of emotion ultimately and logically led to an interest in drama where he finally achieved his widest if not his most appreciative audience. Beginning with the verse drama murder in the Cath Edral in 1935, and continuing with More conventionally produced plays the cock Tail party the confidential clerk and the elder states Man or. Eliot demonstrated that although Basic ally a poet s poet and a critic s critic he could when he wished transmit his message to the More diversified audiences of Broad Way and London s West end. Long before his Success in the commercial theatre however. Mi4. Eliot s thought had taken a significant new direction. The disillusion of his Early poems was slowly replaced with disciplined optimism after his conversion from the unitarianism of his new England forefather to the Church of England in 1926 the same year he espoused British citizenship. Thereafter his poems and essays concentrated on religious themes. The first in the new Mode were published in 1940 As the four quartets and were not Only less cynical in tone but also less lyrical in execution. By this time the rebel was Well on his Way to becoming a pillar of the establishment a role he has filled with dignity Ever since. Not for or. Eliot in maturity was the final but even less in character was a final whim per. His world ended on a note of optimism like that of his elder statesman whose last word in the play was it is Worth dying to find out what life tsdedtri5 and first 10 lines or less per insertion 52.00.
