Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 11, 1965, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press monday january 11. 1965 liberals turn Down bid to alter wage legislation the Liberal party of Manitoba turned Down a suggestion Satur Day that the system of setting wage Levels through the Means of the fair wage Board be abolished in the province. A Resolution that the govern ment set no wages rates except the general minimum wage rates was deleted from the party s labor resolutions which and unions and employees they and to the encouragement of the Resolution said such com Mittee should be set up on a permanent basis with research assistance provided by the provincial government or prefer ably by the University of Manitoba. It s purpose would be to create and maintain an atmosphere were drawn up to establish lib that will be conducive to retain eral policies in the Field of labor-1 ing present Industry in Manitoba management relations. At the same time delegates decided to Call for the abolition of government supervision of strike votes. Lawyer Sam Breen speaking for the abolition motion said government supervised strike votes had not served their intended purpose. Another Delegate argued How Ever that without government supervision Union management could push through strike votes and there could be a situation like the seafarers International Union of Winnipeg lawyer d Arcy Jim Caffrey told delegates during the discussion of the Resolution that at present the government is required to set wages rates be cause some parties employers and employees Are not on an equal or.
