I Humphrey remembers Jimmy by Russell Doern on wednesday night the United states will focus its attention on Washington and the inaugural Ball. Washing ton will glitter As thousands of America s most influential pay homage to their president and vice president. Somewhere among the Power elite unnoticed in the chattering clattering crowd will be Jimmy Wolford. Jimmy will be As proud As the presidential punch Tor his Man Hubert Humphrey will stand at the Side of the president As number two Man in the United states. Could it really be True it All seemed so Long ago in 1960 Humphrey Advance men fanned through West Virginia preparing for the struggle with the Kennedy clan. The prize the democratic nomination for pres ident. Karl Rolvaag now governor of Minnesota was in a Williamson radio station one Day when he heard a Singer recording a flour commercial. The voice intrigued or. Rolvaag who promptly engaged the Singer for the Humphrey Campaign. He was asked to make up Campaign songs and put on salary for five weeks in West Virginia then seven weeks in Minnesota. That Singer was a modest and sincere 26-year-old West virginian named Jimmy Wolford. The crowds came to hear the senator from Minnesota who was fighting the talented Young senator from Massachusetts John f. Ken Nedy. Jimmy Wolford provided the kind of music the people of West Virginia knew and loved. Best known was a Wolford original i no Gonna vote for Hubert Humphrey but there were others Sung to the tunes of Hail West Virginia the crowded song and Davy Crockett some 20 altogether. After two and a half weeks the Money began to run out and Jimmy paid for his own food and drink. One night outside of Huntington he was told that the situation was Bleak. Sen. Humphrey was in debt. News paper ads were inserted ask ing for donations and the senator phoned old acquaintances for assistance. But sen. Humphrey refused to quit. Jimmy remembers h i m standing on a Riverbank with Snow coining Down cry ing his eyes out about what he believed in talking to a group of workers standing by a Mike i d just introduced him the tears just coming Down his face or another time the Sun was beaming right in his face. I offered him my Sun glasses but he refused because he wants people to see his Eye s. He does t Wear Sun the polls in West Virginia closed at 8 May 10. I960. An hour later the first results came in Kennedy 638 Humphrey 473. The Pat Tern was Clear. There were Only two things left for sen. Humphrey to do Telegram the victorious Kennedy and make a for Mal statement of withdrawal. At 1 . He wired his con cession. At . Lie arrived at his shabby head quarters to make the withdrawal formal before a handful of supporters and the press. Jimmy Wolford played for the last time. I have a Brief statement to sen. Humphrey said before the cameras. Slowly he read i am no longer a candidate for the democratic presidential Nom Jimmy wolfed tried one last chorus. I m Gonna vote for Hubert Humphrey he s your Man and mine but he could not go on. He put his head Down on his guitar and cried. Senator Humphrey went Over and patted him on the shoulder. A he said. Four years went by Hubert Humphrey was the colossus of Atlantic City the leading contender for the vice presidential nomination the peace maker of the free Dom delegation versus the Mississippi regulars All eyes focussed on him. Then he was chosen by president Johnson. The Humphrey Victory party wan the place to be in Atlantic City. Minnesotans mixed with Well wishers laughed drank and shouted. People spilled out of the reception area and jammed the Shelburne hotel. Finally just hours after the announcement sen. Humphrey pushed his Way into the cheering throng. A chair was passed Over the Heads of the c r o w d for him to stand on. As he spoke an intent Young Man holding a a guitar watched. During a pause the guitarist began to sing we re for Hubert Humphrey we shall not be moved Humphrey turned and cautioned hold it the time for Jimmy Wol Ford had t come. With a few More remarks sen. Humphrey concluded and Over the cheers Jimmy Wolford led the singing of we re for Hubert Humph Rey we shall not be adding choruses of numerous key supporters. Sen. Humphrey had arrived. He held his party s nomination for the vice presidency. He stood near the main Springs of political Power the american presidency. Jimmy Wolford was now on the outside. He stood out Side the Circle of Power that separates Ordinary citizens from High office. And Jimmy had fallen on hard times. Six weeks be fore the convention he hitch hiked to Atlantic City and landed a Job in a Small night club 37 Miles away. Why did he come i wanted to let him know that i was there too. He lost an election in 1960, but i lost something too. Maybe i lost my youth. Maybe i got old fast Jimmy Wolford was Down and he knew it. He could Only wait and Hope. Hope that Hubert Humphrey would remember on oct. 15 senator Humph Rey s office announced that Jimmy Wolford would be joining the Crew on the Happy Warrior the Jet which carried the senator and his party. Hubert Humphrey had not forgotten. November was a landslide months for the democrats and january the Sweet smell of Success. Lyndon Johnson had made it. And Hubert Humphrey was one step away. Four years earlier Hubert Humphrey made this drama tic statement to a crowd of West virginians and when i walk convard to accept the nomination for the president of the United states this boy will be with Currie St. Vital rejected offer metro s director of Parka and Protection Andrew Currie. Unless of course you re already driving one. Then you know it s Winter when you Start passing everyone else. In the Winter a Volkswagen goes where others fear to tread. Because the Volkswagen tread gets More traction. You know what happens when somebody else gets stuck in the Snow. They need a push. Well that s our Way too. Only we let the engine do the pushing. Not people. We put the engine in the rear with its weight Over the drive wheels. So the Back wheels make the front move without the help of a driveshaft. We think that makes sense. Just As much sense As having no Radiator no water to boil Over no water no rust no anti freeze and no big Gas Bills. If you Don t like pushing and you Haven t got any pull with a Tow truck concern a trip to your vow dealer is a Good idea. Or you can forget it. Atid Well pass.
