Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 27, 1965, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press wednesday january 27, 1965 Farmer to Bear Burden by Victor Mackie Ottawa staff the Cana Dian Farmer is the Man in the Middle who will have to absorb the loss in the Cut Throat wheat Price slashing operation now under Way among major exporting cations. The Canadian wheat Board tuesday slashed wheat prices for Export. It was forced to Cut prices in order to meet cuts put into effect by the australians the Argentine and the United states a Federal government spokesman said tuesday. The . Has introduced Price cuts on All wheat except Spring wheat. The cuts Are reported to be about 12 cents. Canada did not Cut its wheat by that much but it has implemented Price cuts ranging from two to 7h cents a Bushel. The . Price is subsidized by the . Government. Consequently when the . Cuts the wheat Price the american government has to maintain the support Price and absorb the resultant loss. But in Canada when the wheat Board decides to Cut the Price it is the Farmer who absorbs the loss. The wheat Board Sells wheat in the competitive world Market and if the other major suppliers of wheat Are cutting prices the wheat Board has to Cut prices of Canadian wheat to remain competitive. Trade minister Mitchell Sharp attended a meeting in washing ton before Christmas at which several of the major wheat sup pliers were present. At that time the . Made it Clear that if Argentina and Australia continued to Cut prices . Would have to take Price cutting Steps in order to protect itself in the wheat markets of the world. Rivard drop bail bid order related continued Raymond Rouleau said h called his brother either the same Day or the Day after or Rivard s request that he Enlis Guy Rouleau s assistance. We also suggested that if it appeared that the Viscount would be operating two years beyond 1959 then they the discounts be consolidated into the Dorval base rimmed or. Wilson said that if the Wallace Clark recommendation had been followed the Viscount Fleet would not have been in Winnipeg after 1961. He testified that their original estimate for the Cost of the Dorval base was million. Following their instructions to eliminate the Viscount overhaul from the specifications they revised this estimate Down to million. Dorval excess or. Wilson was questioned on evidence that there was now an excess capacity at the Dorval base. He commented that this was not a simple question and that he believed the excess capacity would have resulted from the fact that the present airline s Fleet has proved to be better in operation than appeared in the Early stages of development. For instance he said engines run longer Between overhaul than anyone had envisaged in their Early experience with jets. This and other technical pro Gress had reduced the work Load and excess capacity would not be because of but because of this technical pro Gress. Or. Wilson concluded his evidence wednesday morning As the second witness to be called by air Canada.
