Telephone 832-4430 284-1402 Case of a labor of love by Andre Maurois the English use an expression which i like a labor of love. It Means a Job done with love not so much for Money or ambition As Lor pleasure. But i would especially like to speak today about a Job done for the love of someone. There Are difficult tasks which in themselves give no pleasure but which suddenly become enjoyable when done for a loved one. Work is Joy take an employee who has Little enthusiasm for his Job but who Falls in love with the Boss s daughter. He knows he will her Only if he proves his Worth and renders himself indispensable to the firm. Here is a boy who is going to work with Joy. Take the wife of a writer who types her husband s Manu scripts. This is not a pleasant task. His handwriting is difficult to decipher the hours spent at the typewriter give her a backache and sometimes she stays up Hall the night to finish an article. But what a Joy it is if she. Loves him to present him on time with an impeccably typed manuscript. His tender thanks Are ample recompense for All her hard work. I know of a Case which i consider a. Wonderful example where a difficult Job was done Lor the love of a dead person. This Story was told to me by its heroine one of the finest dancers at the opera de Paris. Her parents had enrolled her at a very Early age at the school of dance. She was pretty and Graceful and they Felt she could make a career of the Ballet. The Little girl submitted sadly. She would rather have continued her studies. Showed Promise her teacher at the opera was an elderly woman of italian origin who had once been a famous Prima Donna and who recognized with sure instinct that the Little girl had great Talent. She uttered to give her private lessons and tried to communicate to her the love of the it was in vain the Young girl stubborn and rebellious had Only average refused to put Forth the extra Effort which have made her Shine out Over her companions. .5 then one Day when the Little girl came for her lesson Shet found the old woman in bed with a burning fever. It was double pneumonia. The doctor came worried the student who loved her elderly Ballet teacher dearly Deg cited to take care of her and notified her parents of Bee decision. Thus the two women spent Many hours together and the old woman in her fever talked you she said you have been both my greatest hops and my greatest disappointment. You had More natural Talent than any other dancer i have Ever known. I have made Many a Star during my lifetime and i thought you would be the last and that you would do me great honor.7 then i covered with sadness that you Dernot like the Ballet. Despite my efforts you have not tried. Talent is nothing without hard work. Now i am going to die to leave you and you Wiur never fulfil my Hopes what a love served her after a week of struggle the old dancer died in the arms of the Young was profoundly moved. She was filled with remorse. It is she thought i could have done it but i did t want to and i disappointed this woman who loved then suddenly she said to herself Why not become what she expected of me i can still give to her dead what 1 did t know How to give to her j and from that Day on she worked so ardently that she quickly bypassed All of the stages and Rose to the top. Today she is one of the most famous dancers i the world. Love saved her. Yes we sometimes go to a great Deal of trouble to expiate the unhappiness we have caused a Mother now dead a human being whom we have disappointed. But would t if be much better to begin while they Are still living and give them the happiness of witnessing this labor of love 100 club gives prizes gifts the 100 club an auxiliary to Knowles school for boys has reported on its activities last year. Some Are less affectionate More withdrawn and seemingly More self sufficient than others. It takes an understanding Par ent to draw out a child who stands aloof Tor he does not in spire equal warmth. Criticism punishment and showing Hurt feelings May inhibit him fur ther. The following Little girl is not an average two and a half year old for she. Is More cooperative and better behaved than most. Mrs. L. F. Worries because she is unresponsive to adults. She writes my husband feels i am concerned unnecessarily. I wonder if the fault is mine. She is Obedi ent but when she is corrected even mildly reprimanded she withdraws and sulks usually lying on the floor. This has been going on for Over a year. I ignore her or give extra love and cuddling but she Dis likes being loved up this was apparent when she was. A tiny baby. It seems so hard to show her the love i think is necessary. Happier alone she plays Well with other children though she wants her own Way a lot she has shown no jealousy toward her baby sister and demands Little person Al attention. She seems happier when left alone. She does any Little task neatly for which i Praise her. It does t seem to matter to her. She Seldom will go to adults ignores them. This is not Only strangers but grandparents and friends. This morning when a neighbor came to the door she would not say hello she put her head Down sulked and would not raise it until the woman had gone. I spanked her but this is not the answer. A Well mannered child is import ant to me but most of All i want her to be to be obedient at this age is not typical so she has a great desire to please or a fear of not pleasing. Your Only fault could be in being so demanding and strict with her that she has reason to sulk and nurse resent Ful feelings. No one can expect her to like not having her Way and being reprimanded. Jealous reaction withdrawal May be a jealous reaction. There May be no More to her other behaviour than that she is an a demonstrative shy child. Let her stand Back and develop Confidence. Social Man ners come later. Show love and approval of her without demanding responses she does not feel or cannot express. This must come Natur ally. If it does not. Let her be herself without disparagement. This will help thaw a cold child j Don t make a Mountain of a j mole Hill but if her behaviour be i comes More extreme consult a child guidance Counselor.
