Starry Sun is big enough to gobble up our whole world a million times and still have room for More. Some of the faraway stars Are big enough to gobble up Pur Sun a million times and some Are no bigger than the Earth. But All the stars Are fiery balls of blazing gases. They Burn with the kind of fire and heat that comes from an atomic bomb. For the stars Are nuclear Power plants and their Radiant heat and Light come from atomic Energy. Hydrogen and oxygen Iiron Are chemical Jele ments. Our world is made from countless solids liquids and gases. But All these substances Are made from about 90 differ ent elements. The stars also Are made from these and perhaps a few bother elements. But the fiery furnaces Are too hot the chemicals to become solids or liquids. Stars Are made of gases Seething gases hotter than our hottest blast furnaces. Hydrogen is the element made of the smallest atoms and Hydrogen makes up Only a tiny fraction of our world. But Hydrogen is the most plentiful of All the gases in a Star. A Star is made from about nine parts of Hydrogen Gas and one part of other Seething gases. This Hydrogen is the fuel for its Furnace which it. Burns by nuclear fusion. This process is the opposite of nuclear fission which is the splitting apart of atoms. In nuclear fusion smaller atoms Are joined together to make larger atoms. In a Star Small atoms of Hydrogen Are fused to make larger atoms of helium. A few fragments of the Hydrogen atoms Are left Over. They Are the Ashy waste from the fiery Furnace but they Are very different from the ashes of a Coal fire. In a Star the waste fragments of Hydrogen Are changed .-into., Seething atomic i Energy. pour Forth in All directions 33 heat and dazzling the sunbeams that fall Earth to from 93 million Miles away. They Are the atomic Energy of our starry Sun. I Andy sends a 15-Inch world Book Globe to Danny Kelley age 10, of Spokane wash., for his question can air be weighed it would be a Tricky Job to i weigh the air say in a shoe i Box. But it can be done two identical containers would be weighed on a perfect pair of delicate Scales. Both would seem empty but one would be full of Ordinary air and the other would be a vacuum from which the air had been re moved. The difference in weight would be a Mere fraction of a Gram it would equal the weight of the air in the air filled Container. The air in an average room weighs Only one or two pounds. The airy atmosphere reaches hundreds of Miles above our Heads and it presses Down upon the Earth with terrific weight. An instrument called the Baro meter is used to weigh the air from the very Bottom at ground level to the very top where it merges with outer space. The barometer weighs the air pres sing Down upon one Square Inch of the Earth s surface. The weight varies depending upon the height temperature and moisture. At sea level the average weight of a column of air above one Square Inch is about 14.5 pounds. Children Are invited to St turf their question to Andy the Winnipeg free press on a postcard giving the name address and age of the sender. By c. A. Miller retired supervising assessor income tax department there is no exemption for a can any salary or wages paid to such a person be deducted from the taxpayer s income. The Only time a housekeeper enters the tax. Picture is when there Are children in the Home and the taxpayer is a widow or widower. A taxpayer maintains a Home for the children after the death or desertion of the spouse then the employment of a housekeeper will allow added exemption for one child. When the taxpayer employs a housekeeper to care for the Home and children and is separated divorced or a i a claim for is allowable on one child As an equivalent to married exemption and the fact that a full time housekeeper is employed that same child on which the is allowed May be claimed again for the Ordinary child s allowance. This would give a widower with two children employing a full time House keeper the same exemption he had when his wife was alive. Points to remember Are that a housekeeper has no bearing on the tax return unless there Are children in the Home. A single person or without children is taxed As a single person regardless of the fact they maintain their own Home.
