Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - February 6, 1965, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press saturday february 6, 1965 grass not always Greener by Andre Maurois of the academic Francaise it often happens that during the course of life we find ourselves at the Fork of two paths. A love is offered to is we must accept or refuse it. A Chance is Given us to take a Job we can take it or leave it. Very often once the Choice is made it is impossible to turn Back. The Lover has found another woman easier to convince the Job has Heen Given to a rival. Willy. Nilly we must pursue our route in the direction chosen. Without regrets not always. Many of Are made off the cuff because we Are in a hurry. We May have been misinformed or May not have had time to weigh the consequences and in Many cases a few words spoken in haste without knowing clearly Why we said them bind us for life. Then when the situation emerges More clearly when we discover the real character of the Boss for whom we have agreed to work or when perhaps the rejected suitor turns out to be a Fine Man and makes a Brilliant career Are Apt to give Way to an endless flow of complaints. Envious dreams if i had Only known if i had it to do Over again i have failed in there Are countless dreams of what could have been. We Are not Happy we envy our friends who have succeeded better and we groan and to think it is my own fault if at this Crossroads i had Only taken the right instead of the left Fork an easy enough tiling to today i would be another person loved Rich and no. This is a dangerous and fallacious Way of thinking. There Are Many reasons for believing that had you chosen the right Fork you would be just As unhappy today. Why because another Factor the most important one has not changed. It is your own nature. Happiness depends much less on events than on the Way in which we meet them. Of course there Are great misfortunes which Are difficult to Bear but most people s lives Are made up of a mixture of successes and failures. It is we and we alone who out of this impartial mixture can draw happiness or misfortune. Suppose that tomorrow a magician should say to you you cannot console yourself for having chosen the left Fork All right i will turn Back the clock and bring you Back to that Fork. There you will be free to choose and from that moment to Start your life Over what would happen probably1 a Little you would make the same mistakes which would Lead to the same difficulties because this is your character. Must regret nothing the moral of the Story it is that first of All you must Reform this dangerous element in your character rather than dream about what might have happened. Of what use is it to incessantly evoke this fatal Fork this inevitable Choice the magician who could take you Back to this Point does not exist. Above All you must regret nothing. It is not at All certain that this particular Fork was fatal and your Choice inevitable. On the right path you would have met hundreds of other Forks just As important where the Choice would have been just As difficult. So the important thing is not to deplore the path chosen but to make the most of what one finds there. Look a Little closer at this path. It has its Beauty and its Charm. Beautiful Oaks Shade it. Through the Trees one can perceive the Lovely Countryside. The ground is in Good condition. Flowers grow along the Banks. The truth is that both paths Are Good that All the paths Are Good if we Are faithful to our Choice and refuse to look Back. Raise arms of breath Holder breath holding is behaviour which is More upsetting to the Mother than harmful to the child. However it is important for a baby to be examined by the doctor when he first acts this Way to Rule out physical causes. Usually it is a matter of temperament a baby who becomes very angry when he cries hard or a child whose temper Tantrum ends this Way. Mothers will be consoled by the knowledge that no one can breath Long enough to do himself harm. The child who persists tarns slightly Blue and becomes Semi conscious will quickly catch his breath mrs. R. K. Offers a method of preventing this extreme behaviour. Just raise the child s arms High Over his head when he begins to hold his breath and this will almost immediately help him to catch it. A paediatrician gave this advice to my sister in Law who passed it on to me. I Hope it will help others As it did no cold water thank you for the sensible suggestion of which i approve far More than others sometimes mentioned. I could not recommend throwing cold water on such a child for though it May Shock him into breathing it is too upsetting. A whiff of smell ing salts May do the trick but Only a whiff too much May be harmful. When the spell is Over a Mother s concern should be to avoid them when possible. With a baby this Means attention to his cries but Don t spoil my by catering to every whimper. This creates other problems. In spite of conscientious Loving care there Are infants who work themselves up easily who Are impatient for the bottle or fearful of the Bath and who vehemently protest and suck in their breath. Learn the cause parents with a two or three year old who has such fits of temper should try to determine what situations trigger them and when they occur. Often they can be avoided. A Little tolerance before lunch or at the of the Day May prevent a tired youngster from becoming frustrated and upset. This is no time to expose him to excitement new situations or to go to the mat with him for Misbehaviour. But All such situations cannot be prevented. Nor can a Mother ignore such extreme self punishment As she May be told to do for other temper tantrums. But she can be matter of fact in soothing him and firm in not giving in to him later. Thus he May learn that such antics get him nowhere. Dispel your fears and problems during the first six months a new baby is in your Home by Reading mrs. Eldred s Booklet baby s first six months.
