Mcgregor testifying be fore the Thompson commission said the base s existing build Ings Are unsuitable for looking after dc-9 planes soon to be bought by air Canada. He. Was replying to commis Sion counsel Alan Sweatman had previously said that do 9 overhaul arrangements ranked As one of the Central prob lems considered by the commission. Or. Sweatman was trying to establish what alternative Active. Cities might occupy the base after air Canada stops Over hauling discounts around 1973. Although or. Mcgregor totally rejected Jet repair work at the existing base he agreed that a new Winnipeg overhaul facility could be built at an operating Cost of around million a year. He firmly left the impression however that the base will close As soon As discounts Are phased out of service. He also suggested the airline and Winnipeg representatives o u 1 d form a committee to stimulate alternative activity to replace Viscount work. He emphatically said he does t conceive that any overhaul work will be done Here on any present Jet aircraft or on any contemplated you Don t have flights Stop Ping in mid career for overhaul he said. We Don t envision any overhaul at an in route Point such As the airline president then suggested that a joint air Canada Winnipeg committee should be formed to see what can be done to create alternative activity at the base. He disclosed that air Canada has a Strong wish to obtain bilateral rights for a new Winnipeg Chicago route. But he said this would Only improve Winnipeg transportation ser vices it would t do anything to prolong the life of the overhaul base. Or. Sweatman suggested that the airline just can t walk away from Winnipeg leaving in. Its Wake a Trail of lost jobs and income. Or. Mcgregor agreed he would not be Happy about the airline s exit and he pledged to do everything possible to said or. Sweatman your heart May bleed but we d like you to leave a Little of your blood in this the air Canada president said he doubts whether the develop ment of regional air carries would provide enough work to keep the base running. The commission which is investigating the proposed Transfer will hear the Manitoba government s counter proposals next week. Car does t Calgary mayor favors Monorail to Banff Calgary up mayor Grant Macewan favors a Mono rail Between Calgary and Banff but the Canadian Pacific rail Way takes a different View. Mayor Macewan said Friday a Monorail would Cut travelling time in half Between the City and the Rocky Mountain resort Centre and boost Calgary As a Winter sport and tourist area. But a car spokesman said the railway had studied the possibility a few years ago and decided against the idea for several reasons a new Monorail line would be counter to the car s Long Range policy of cutting passenger service. Existing rail line service could be easily improved to meet a demand created by staging of the 1973 olympic Winter games in the Banff area. Present rail traffic by ski ers to Banff does not warrant an improvement in service. Mol Gat urges action on feed Manitoba Liberal Leader Gil Das Mol Gat called on the provincial government Friday for action in the face of an expected feed shortage in the province. In an interview or. Mol Gat said that an inventory of cattle feed supplies should be made at once and if a severe shortage is found then the province must look elsewhere for supplies and Tell Farmers of the situation. If this was not done said or. Mol Gat there might be panic Selling of cattle at give away prices in March or april because Farmers would not be Able to provide sufficient feed. He said that a serious prob Lem was now developing ill some areas particularly the Northern part of the province. The Hay shortage was caused by extremely weather last summer in some areas and this was being complicated by the severe Winter conditions. Con sumption of feed was higher than had been expected under these conditions he said. In some areas there May be drastic cutting of herds. Or. Mol Gat noted that Saskatchewan had a similar problem and that a. H. Mcdonald minister of agriculture for Saskatchewan had already taken action.
