By Ken Winters things Are going Well for the Royal Days. Ballet these big Tours Are in the off ing big contracts have been signed big plans Are afoot and the playhouse soon will be unable to hold the company s growing audience. So let s take for granted at the outset of this review that we. All think the company s burgeoning Success is wonderful and All Are glad that it s happening Here As Well As abroad. Let s also take As read the Many pleasant things about Friday evening s show. It was a Good show and i m sure most of us had a Good time at it. And there were lots of us there for a change which made it even better. But precisely because of All this certain things b riday struck me As being urgently in need of reconsideration and repair. First of All the new Ballet bournonville s 123-year old Napoli act three of it at least imported from its native Denmark and taught to our com Pany with evident skill and care by Kirsten Radlov. Beyond the fact that it is obviously Well with in our company s technical scope what i wonder has it to do with us in Denmark where it is polished and loved As part of the coun try s cherished tradition of dance it quite possibly has a glow and a Quality of deep rooted authenticity which keep it really alive for both dancers and Public. But out of its choreographic context out of its tradition and out of its country As it was Friday on our playhouse stage it seemed Only Sweet and pretty and harmless and desperately tame. If the Royal Winnipeg Ballet plans to launch its fresh attack on the stages of the world with act three of Napoli As one of the arrows in its quiver i fear for its safety. Despite deft and delightful dancing from the company the Only part of the act that seemed to communicate firmly and adequately was the Tarantella which certainly could be salvaged for use As a curtain Raiser or a Short divertissement Between larger works. Sitting through the whole act even As Well As it was done Friday however i could not escape the feeling that a be loved danish War horse had been transformed by some Well mean ing but unfortunate magic into yet another Mouth to feed in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet s consider Able stable of White elephants. Not the dancers fault not the Trainer s fault not even Napoli s fault just a slow to emerge but nonetheless untimely fault in the company s selective judgment. If n atoll asks mutely for reconsideration Swan Lake cries out for repair. By now the com Pany knows several substantial sections of this grandest of grand ballets could it not supplement these and piece them together to see if they would spell Swan Lake or at least a respectable abridgement of it a la Chine the set too. Needs attention. The present one is heavy cluttered distracting. It gives me Claustrophobia and quite the wrong sort of Swan Lake set for a Small company on a Small stage. Something vaguer More mysterious and a Good Deal More spacious seeming is overdue i think. Something More Silvery and delicate than the lighting currently in use might transform the present set but i doubt it. In connection with the cur rent performance of act three of Swan Lake a Short musical discussion is in order. The com Pany has hired a new musical director and almost everything he has done so far Points to his being a. Real asset. Or. Mills conducts simply calmly and with admirable steadiness. He seems to have no nonsense about him and a firm grip on the meaning of the word practical in which Case i think he should be consulted and not simply bossed. I am Only guessing that he has been bossed but i base the guess on the firm disbelief that he As a musician and As a practical Ballet conductor could possibly have condoned the slow motion crawl at which he asked his or Chestra to play the adagio from the Pas de Deus in act three. Miss Taverner As Odette and or. Strobel As Prince Siegfried May have wanted to show their ability to control the Pas de Dux at that absurd Pace and in fact they did manage the mechanics of it admirably. They stayed on their feet unshakeable but the music drooped into incoherent dreariness and the dance lost its sense just As poetry would lose its sense if a Reader were to spend a minute on each word of it. There is a Speed below which a time Art May not function if it wants to keep the sense from draining away through the rifts in the continuity. At any rate the adagio which has been splendid and very moving in the past lost its Point on firday. Despite All this the eve Ning As i said at the outset had Many Joys to offer. There were the familiar but nonetheless Welcome excitements of the Black Swan Pas de Deus gorgeously danced by miss Taverner and or. Strobel. There were our old friends the comedians Bonny and Brave and Batty As Ever spreading Delight through the witty choreography of Ruth Anna Boris the beguiling music of Kaba Levsky and the dancers own Bright Charm. There was the remarkably improved work of Bill Martin vis count particularly noticeable in the Pas de trois from act one Swan Lake. Kit Kopping also showed new authority and skill in pretty Well All she did and so did Wendy Barker. Miss Taverner and Richard Rutherford were a Delight and consequently a Relief in the Napoli Tarantella. Lynette Fry gave pleasure in a Hundred delicate ways even in the flimsiest flights of Napoli. It is precisely because one values these things that one re Grets other things that May hold the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Back on the eve of the potentially brightest new Day of its career have been made.
