Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - February 9, 1965, Winnipeg, Manitoba 20 Winnipeg free press tuesday february there s circumstantial evidence that a perfect game should be rolled in the forthcoming american Bowling Congress tournament which opens March 25 in St. Paul Minnesota. The reason i say this is because St. Paul has hosted two Abc tournaments previously and in each of these a 300 game was rolled. There has t been a perfect Abc tournament game now since 1961, and this is the longest lapse since the Post War period of Bowling. Statistically speaking in previous Abc tournaments there have been a total of games bowled in All and Only 17 of these have been perfect 300s. That makes the Odds against hitting a perfect game to one which i think is tougher than getting a Hole in one. Further research shows that of the 17 perfect games not a single one was in team events although in team Competition there have been a 297, two 298 a and three 299 s. Of the 17 men who hit the perfect score 10 did it in the singles Competition and the others in the doubles. The first perfect Abc game was fired in 1913, and the last Man to hit it was Robert Degraff of grand rapids Michigan in the 1961 classic doubles. We shall see from March 25 through May 27 at the Abc. Fool i i c3 Cordie Howe s local swimmers fare Well in meet i break about 100 hockey Sticks a season playing in the National hockey league. That s counting those i break in practice As Well. When you get a stick that has just the right feel and snap for you you d like to keep it. But that puck is like a piece of steel after it freezes. So the stick really takes a battering despite the added Protection of the tape you wind around the Blade. Of course one of the main purposes of the tape is to give you a better Purchase on the puck. Today s More expensive Sticks Are reinforced with a Glass Fibre finish. So they do last longer. However i got an education i regarding Wood when i visited a factory where they make hockey Sticks. I realized there Are different grades of lumber but i wondered if Sticks would be uniform if they All were made from the Wood from one select tree. They explained there Are All different textures different types of Wood from the outside of the tree to the Core of it you May Piave what appear to be identical Trees on a Bill. On will be right on the Edge of the tree line and it will be battling the wind throughout its whole life Span. The similar tree maybe three or four feet in from a seed from the same original tree will be of a weaker texture than the one that s been fighting the wind. The Wood from the first tree will be harder make stiffer hockey shafts. They said the same thing is True when it comes to making baseball bats. They said babe Ruth for one Only would use bats that had three eyes or knots in Thern they made the Wood and the Bat heavier. They gave me one of the babe Ruth bats and one of a lighter texture. I gave the lighter Bat to Murray Oliver now with the Boston Bruins when he was playing baseball for gait. The youngest of my three sons is named after Murray. That babe Ruth Bat was a Little too heavy for any of us. The starry swimming of.
