Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - February 9, 1965, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press tuesday february 9, 1965 Rule holds True in Viet Nam on Canada and defence a voice from the ranks by Warner Troyer Nicosia Cyprus dear Warner one of the Fellows in our outfit Here gets his Home town paper the saturday edition every week and the Fel lows really enjoy finding out from your column what National defence is All about. Actually he asked his family to Send him a Banjo which he thought would be very popular in the bars Here. But he is glad to get the newspapers instead one of the Fellows used to take a guitar into a bar we go to for a Coke sometimes and a Young lady broke it Over his head last i thought you might be interested in How some of us sympathize with the problems you have been describing and a few you be a Bunch of us were washing our socks and dainties at the Village Well yesterday and someone remarked about the Navy. Seems some of the naval officers Are mad about not having the White Ensign to Fly anymore. One of the corporals he s a bit cynical said they had nothing to com Plain about As Long As or. Hellyer let them keep on wearing a Hankie up their left sleeve. Then another fellow he s from Ottawa got a letter from his father who is in the civil service. The letter said a Bunch of senior air Force officers in Ottawa were telling their friends they were All going to build flagpoles in their front Yards. Then they Are All going to Fly the Craf Ensign the Blue one in front of their houses he said. The Corporal said maybe the Craf Guys should build naval Type Flag poles so they would be Able to use the Yard arms after things Don t work out too Well for them. The funny thing is that the army officers Don t seem to do any complaining. The Corporal says that s because the army is afraid or. Hellyer might take our second world War tanks away from us if we did. He says we be got no place to go but up so we re pretty smart to let the air Force and Navy officers do All the griping. One interesting idea one of the Fellows had was about a few of the officers from Ottawa who Don t like integration. He says Why Don t they go to work for somebody who has a system they like better it s kind of difficult to do a Good Job he says when you have to keep interrupting your complaints to keep up with things in the office. We be been wondering a bit about integrated uniforms. There was a Story in an american newspaper not Long ago that the . Marines and the . Navy Are standardizing some of their stuff. And the marines Are mad cause they have to use a Navy Belt buckle instead of their old ones _ which were very Good for opening Beer bottles and some times the skin of someone with whom you maybe Dis agreed a Little. Most of the Fellows would be willing to use the old Marine buckles if they Are going cheap now. We never seem to find a bottle opener when we want one and we drink a lot of cokes in this hot climate Over Here. I think there was something else i wanted to suggest. Of yeah. The Corporal says it was very Clever of indo Nesia to pull out of the United nations. That Way or. Sukarno won t have to make any contribution toward the peace keeping forces that Malaysia says it s going to ask for if or. Sukarno keeps Landing people with guns along Malaysia s coast. The Corporal says or. Sukarno could conquer Malaysia a lot faster if he sent a couple of Hundred girls from Bali into the country. But then maybe he wants to keep them at Home. Anyway. If we have to go to Malaysia do you think the in might get a few maps and things first that s been a bit of a problem some of the other times you know. Those Fellows in new York Don t seem to plan ahead very much. And it would be very embarrassing to land at Jakarta or maybe Shanghai by mistake. One of the Guys who reads a tit says he Hopes or. Hellyer does decide to buy the f-4, i think it s called the phantom for the air Force. He says if we had the Phan Tom we d have to use american Supply bases and spare parts and things if we wanted to use it anywhere outside Canada. That s a great idea he says cause that Means All the Small countries would think the americans were subsidizing us and that would mean we would t be acceptable i Africa or Asia to help keep the peace. He thinks that s a great idea cause he d rather stay Home and ski anyhow. Hope you did t mind me using your first name. The lieutenant reads All your columns and he says he thinks you Are plenty Young enough to be called by your first name. Sincerely private Smith. Split saps party strength . Can t afford to talk peace by Chalmers Roberts Ift Ashington special w tons on his re turn to Washington from Geneva in 1954 after Viet Nam had been divided into two states one communist and one free the late Gen. President Johnson ordered air retaliation and it has taken place in two Seg ments on sunday and Mon Day. A key question now is whether considering Gen. Bedell Smith s Rule such . Action and More of the same is Likely if there Are further Viet Cong attacks of the same order of magnitude can improve the american South vietnamese posture at any possible future Confer ence table. As of today the very word negotiation is a forbidden one for american officials. This is especially so after the president shot Down at his press conference last thursday rumours from Paris that some sort of secret negotiations were getting under Way. But that does not mean the . Will never agree to negotiations even though its Public posture now is that the Only solution for Viet Nam is for the North to cease its aggression and with draw its direction and Man Power from the South.
