A moved into Saskatchewan that was expected to bring Milder weather to Winnipeg but it Cut sharply southward to the Dakotas and allowed Arctic air to return. Friday s Low dipped to 19 below. Members of the heart surgical team at St. Boniface who made the diagnosis per formed the operation said Only a handful of the operations have been successfully completed in North America. No re ports to their knowledge have been made of previous Success Ful operations of this Type in Canada. The coronary artery disease both patients had was of the Type that annually causes death in at least people across the country in the age group of .35 to 50. In an interview with members of the surgical team it was Learned that the two operations required lengthy planning intricate diagnosis then a Long operation with use of the heart lung machine bypass which re placed the action of both lungs and hearts. Main arteries there Are two main arteries that feed into the heart and each of these patients had Block Ages in these arteries. This causes severe crippling pain and if the passage closes then it May cause instant death. To diagnose the cases properly meant introducing a tube in to an artery then inject ing a Dye which passed through the main arteries. Through use of a rays it was determined that the patients could possibly be operated on successfully with the new technique. Although there Are Many other patients. With this Type of Dis ease the diagnosis is difficult and slow because the Hospital is hampered of equip ment. Adequate to diagnose other a member of the team would Cost up to when the diagnosis was made the operation was then completely diagrammed to ensure a Correct procedure would be made.
