Chief Justice Dorion said the purpose of recalling Denis is not to determine a question of similar acts but to test the credibility of Denis. There were flagrant contradictions in the testimony at certain witnesses and one of his most difficult tasks was to de cide which witness or witnesses to believe. Chief Justice Dorion then said he would Grant the application of Ross Drouin counsel for the conservative party that Denis be recalled for questioning on his allege statements in the Stonehill Case. He would Reserve his decision on whether other witnesses should be called in the Stonehill Case until after Denis has been heard. Actors submit to ban Home group of ital Ian actors bowed to a City government ban on the Deputy to Day after giving one perform Ance of the controversial play the locked doors of a Rome Bookstore. The Rome prefecture banned the play by West German writer Rolf Hochhuth after the Vatican radio newspaper attacked efforts by Gian Maria Volonte and a group of actors to stage the play. It questions whether Pope Pius Xii did All he could to save the jews from the nazis. We made our said Volonte. We wanted to show we had a right to put the play on Here. Well meet later to de cide what to do Volonte suggested his group might try to stage the Deputy outside Rome since the ban applies Only to the City. In Banning the play the prefecture cited the 1929 Lateran concordat that established relations Between the government of Italy and the Vatican state. It recognizes a special status for Rome As the Centre of roman catholicism and obliges the italian state to protect the papacy from Public offence and Volonte s troupe tried first to present the play before an invited audience saturday night in an improvised theatre. Ulbricht s government diplomatically. It is also recognized Here that if West German economic Aid to Egypt is to be Cut off col. Nasser May Well choose to go the whole Way and also formally recognize East Germany. Bonn is prepared to take this risk and its suspension of arms deliveries to Israel seems mainly designed to dissuade other Arab nations from following col. Nasser s Lead. King Hus Sein s current mediation Effort would appear to indicate that Bonn still holds some Strong positions in the Arab world. Three factors the distinct hardening of the West German position in the last few Days after More than two weeks of apparent indecision seems traceable to three factors col. Nasser s unwilling to Compromise world Public opinion and a sudden surge of German Salvo opinion As Well. Bonn circles resented Fer. Manner in which Cairo Revca Ieti the West German suspension of arms deliveries to Israel and claimed this As an unalloyed diplomatic Victory. At the same time Bonn was cognizant of the Adverse reaction in Western countries and particularly in the United states when its initial efforts to appease col. Nasser were coupled with simultaneous indecision on the Touchy question of a statute of limitations for nazi War criminals. Finally Chancellor Erhard s government noted that in con Trast to political leaders West German Public opinion Felt More deeply about restitution toward Israel and possible humiliation by Egypt than about the Hallstein doctrine. In the last week there has been a rising chorus of voices denouncing the government s initial tendency to temp Orize. Just sunday for example the novelist Gunter grass called on or.
