November 6. 1965 17 profiles on science Patrick and Gatoc Spencer Baird every year millions of fish arc caught in those streams and bodies of water that Are still clean enough to support animal and Plant Hie. The fishermen who catch them have probably never heard of Spencer Baird. If it weren t for him even the remaining clean streams would be empty of fish. Baird 1823-1887. The famous american zoologist Ami natural historian was born in Pennsylvania. He went to the Public schools and to Dickinson College. Even while a Young Man he received notice for his exceptional Devotion to nature and the skill with which he studied and reported natural history. Baird was a famous collector and later on when he became an official and finally head of the smithsonian Institute in Washington d.c., his methods of collecting specimens became Standard throughout the United states. This was an important development in the science of museums. In 1871 be was appointed . Commissioner of fish and fisheries an appointment that proved epochal in the history of fish and game in this country. Baird organized the department so that far More attention was Given to the problems of diminishing supplies of food fish As Well As the problems of the sports Fisherman. Certain fish were disappearing in their usual Homes. Under Laird s supervision fish were raised in hatcheries and placed when grown in their natural habitats. This restocking of Rivers and even Bays of the Ocean was enormously successful. Today billions of fish Are raised in hatcheries and later distributed where they can be caught for sport and food. Baird received world recognition for his work in redevelop ing a diminishing resource. He was honoured by the French German and norwegian governments As Well As by our own. Baird made a great contribution to natural science As Well As to Industry and sport. But what he did was Only the first step in restoring our streams and lakes to their original state. The important thing to be done now is to clean them up so that fish can live in them. Many of the once Beautiful Rivers of America Are now so polluted that not even humans can swim in them.
