Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 9, 1966, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg Frol priss saturday Juty 9, 1966 hard to forget memories of the Wax and due men who made if sir under the heading hard to forgive you published a letter to the editor written by an Anonymous Winnipeg Ger. The letter dealt with the atrocities committed against the jews in Europe by the nazis. I believe in the sincerity of the writer of the letter and also share his her fee tags of sadness and bitterness about those terrible crimes. But i do protest furiously against his her inclusion of my native country. The Netherlands in the general condemnation of the attitude of the european people during those dark years. I am in to position to pass judgment on other euro Pean countries but wish to contravene the statement that people in Europe assisted the nazis in search the Jewis populace. I vouch that in Holland with the exception of a handful of fanatic dutch nazis the nazis did not receive any assistance nor did the dutch participate in plans to organize Slaughters of the jews or any other people there were indeed extremely exceptional circumstances under which the nazis received a Token Assis Tance however to expect one who was t there to understand this would be unrealistic but Best illustrated by the fact that at times the jews themselves were forced into the position of collaborating with the a i want our Anonymous Friend to understand that the dutch were after More than a Century of peace suddenly and unwillingly involved in a struggle f or life or death. People were taken prisoner at random sentenced to be deported or executed without trial. Tens of thousands were forced to work in slave labor Camps in Germany and had to subsist on a Bare mini mum of food were exposed to Allied air attacks and thousands lost their lives As a result thousands were deported to the infamous concentration Camps and Many never returned. Radios cars bicycles yes even dogs and Copper Ware became unlawful possessions and towards the end of the year 1944 the sight of men Between the Ages of 18 and 45 became a rarity. A great number of the population remaining in Holland was deliberately starved to death. And All this suffering engulfed Holland because they fought a War with the German Reich because they were obsessed with the Century old ideas of Freedom because they refused to collaborate with the nazis because they refused to accept their morbid ideologies and animals sir in reference to a letter written by mrs. Percy Bur Dett in your paper she said much regarding a humane society or animal shelter which should be sponsored by the City of St. James. This is a very important item and should be dealt with immediately regardless of what St. James thinks. They have oceans of Money Grants from both governments to be spent on St. James yet the poor animals have to take second or third place. Metro alone has a tidy sum. Why not give the animals a fair share i do appreciate the kind words of recommendation that mayor Steve Juba mailed to me. Why should the humane society be burdened with animals from the City of Winnipeg St. James and All the cities concerned to my viewpoint aviary City surrounding the City of Winnipeg should have its own humane society. This would relieve the responsibility of having the animals All dumped in one place. I d like to see a Law passed to have female cats spayed. I m glad she mentioned about three car Drivers running Over the animals in the Alley they to me Are worse than brutes Bertha band St. James objections sir what Price your child certainly not the most that we can pay is what More can one expect As a result of an Accident of in t it time that we in Canada especially those in a position to make the greatest Impact upon Public opinion expressed More vigorously our misgivings and terror at the increasing barbarity of . Conduct in South East Asia or do the economic tentacles of our great neighbor to the South throttle dissent from Ameri can policy As effectively in this country As they do to the higher ranks of the British government Christopher pow right Winnipeg opposed and obstructed them every Inch of the Way. Yet in All their bewilderment and amidst the indescribable holocaust of injustice and terror sorrow and hunger yet amidst the steadily increasing acts of savagery executed with typical Nail arrogance Holland was the first and i believe the Only c o in to y in nazi occupied Europe where the people Rose in anger to protest the compulsory registration and the deportation of the jewish people. Does our Friend have the faintest idea of what that meant in those Days to declare a general strike and to defy the then mightiest army in the world and what Price the dutch paid for this later admittedly the general strike of february 1941 was a blend of foolish underestimation of the Power and brutality of the nazis and of the simple desire to oppose the enemy. But at the same time it was if nothing else a demonstration by a decent and Normal people genuinely concerned for their fellow Man. I sincerely Hope that our Friend will come to the conclusion that the dutch Are certainly undeserving of t h e critical thoughts expressed in his letter to the fress press. Fred Andri Essert St. Vital fresh Start sir your editorial a fresh Start in the election Day Issue of the free press requires some comment. You state that the conservatives Are Content to rest on their laurels i would hardly think it is a matter of resting but More probably of continuing and completing the work that is now under Way. Eight years is hardly enough time in which to Complete All the jobs necessary after the Lack of Progress of the previous Liberal administration. In eight years the conservatives have greatly improved our Highway system recreation site such As the Birds Hill recreation area grand Beach Grace River provincial Park and numerous smaller areas they have centralized Rural schooling in new buildings in Many areas and should undoubtedly be of considerable use in improving education standards for these areas. The creation of metro by the conservatives seems to cause a Large number of complaints no doubt from individuals who never wish to spend a cent unless it is to their particular advantage. Few of these Are willing to see the Many improvements in roads Bridges Parks and the like that have been made since metro. The greater Winnipeg flood Way has received considerable criticism i pre itsume from the opposition and will be of immense value at least to the local people. The above mentioned Are a few of the projects i can recall which have been started by the conservatives needless to say they Cost a great Deal of our Money and just completing the program now under Way should be enough for the government at the moment. To Institute the Many promises made by the liberals in addition to what is now being done would Likely put an impossible tax Burden on the people of the province in your you accuse the government of overspending yet state Liberal promises which must certainly result in massive overspending. The term overspending however is somewhat vague. Overspend ing the previous Liberal budgets that would t be too difficult. Or do you suggest that some of the present projects Are not Worth while if so Tell us which ones maybe they Are just moving too fast for your liking but this would seem necessary if our province is to be As great As we would like and if Manitoban Are to have the benefits Many other provinces have had for years. Your paper is As most know staunchly Liberal both provincially and federally to almost a fanatic degree. Blind allegiance is hardly worthy of a free press. A Little More constructive criticism might be in order along with honest appreciation of at least some of the Progress of the conservative govern ment. Bill Stephen Winnipeg sir the annual Battle of Britain sunday has been observed. Hearts filled with Pride and gratitude recalling that fateful september after noon when Hitler s invasion plans received a mortal blow. Churchill s incomparable eloquence rang again in our ears a Clarion Call to the living and a tender requiem for the Young men who had kept a rendezvous with death never in the Field of human conflict have so Many owed so much to so it Isi of course difficult to write anything new about the second world War How Ever three incidents intrigue me the first two perhaps because of the difficulty in finding dependable information Only once can i recall having read anything about Churchill s great financial coup. When things were at their blackest it appears he called in six billions of foreign securities exchanging them for British then the Gilt edged ones were packed in Stout boxes and sent by fast ship to thread the submarine infested Atlantic Enro Ute to Canada where they spent the War years in of the basement of an Eastern Bank. And about that invasion sir one purpose of this letter is to discover whether the free press has climbed out of the ring prior to the end of a scheduled 10 Rounder. True enough the fight began a few years ago has dragged on and the opponent does not fight fair. Nevertheless throughout the Bat the a n d right up to the Thompson report no Mani Toban could fault the free press for their determined and Loyal support of the retention of the air can Ada overhaul base in Mani Toba. At this time however the press editorials indicate an air of defeat and so the question requires an answer. Does the Winnipeg free press propose of continue along with the Manitoba delegation now called the Manitoba air policy commit tee to fight to keep our fifth largest Industry where we believe it rightfully belongs yes or no How the free press which recorded the original his tory of deception or any Manitoban for that matter could conceive to quit the Battle and allow further draining away of the last segment of Pur Industry makes no sense at All. Why even the employees who have a great Deal to lose by refusing to Transfer to Mont real have not Given up. In spite of the Thompson re port of 44 employees recently required to Transfer or jeopardize their future with the company Only 21 have accepted. The basis for the beginning of efforts to keep the base Here were that we believed threat. What really occurred seems to be surrounded with mystery. Once it was rumoured that the British had emptied a Tanker on the water near the French coast and created havoc by setting worker s Paradise sir your article West Ber Lin affluence constructed by businessman with e. I wish i could have a conversation with business Man a. i was for five weeks in the capital of the g. D. R. And the g. D. R. Itself. I saw Many differences Between the g. D. A. And Canada most of Berlin is rebuilt or in the process of rebuilding. The people live Happy lives and Are in favor of building socialism. I did not meet anybody who wanted to Exchange socialism for capitalism. They dont have to be afraid of tomorrow and Don t have to work for or. Boss in order to make a living. There the working Man is King. The socialized system is the highest in the world including Sweden. Another 10 years of world peace and the whole Western world including Canada and America will hold to attraction for the or d. R. West Germany is an american Colony and is owned like Canada by the Wall Street capitalists. The a d. R. Is owned by its people and its own Power. It would be in the Best interests of Canada to recognize the g. D. R. As an. Honest pea c e f u 1 country. Don t follow the Neo fascist line of West Germany that the g. D. R. Is non existent a zone or a Romeo plut Sawch Winnipeg the Oil of fire. On another occasion it was reported that wreckage and drowned. German sailors had been picked up. Did you know that Napo Leon was hitter s military Model it is said that he slavishly followed the plans of the French 1812 invasion of Russia mistakes and All. Especial of the crucial one of under rating the Winter while transporting everything required a distance equal to that Between Winnipeg and Vancouver As might Piave been expected teacher and Pupil ended their careers in blood Baths. Little Corporal when his elite Imperial guards never before Defeated dashed themselves to pieces against Wellington s impregnable squares at Waterloo the German Mon Ster when thunderous retribution crashed Down on his tory s most infamous mass murderer inducing him to remove his odious presence from the world stage w. G. Pearce Winnipeg the Battle Lor air Canada goes on we had been misled and deceived by air Canada management. The Thompson report although inadequate did determine that we were deceived. Air Canada management were nut truthful and we Mani Totans were cheated out of a Multi million Dollar Industry now located in Montreal which could have been located Here providing excellent opportunities for decades to Manitoba sons and daughters. While or. Thompson obviously had time to Burn As evidenced by the tremendous length of time it took for him to finalize his report my comments Are briefly that it was an obviously in adequate report for a com missioner to substantiate our the inquiry itself. It is a won Der How or. Thompson could possibly justify his conclusion. Incidentally the com missioner wonders does not conclude or but just wonders whether Winnipeg requires line Maint Enance facilities for dc-8 s and vanguards having studied the reports i am sure that it was a Complete waste of time and Money designed Only to do what it in fact did eat away valuable time. Per haps also it was designed to kill the enthusiasm and determination of those who seek to see the wrongs righted in that regard it would be a Complete failure. The people devoted to Rete letters f o the Kali Tor major claim that we were deceived to substantiate that air Canada s consultants Over estimated costs to Winnipeg and underestimated Cost to Montreal to substantiate that neither of two air Canada consultants did a comparison on the relative costs of providing overhaul and maintenance facilities for dc-8 jets and vanguards at Montreal As against the Cost of providing such facilities at Winnipeg and indeed to substantiate that air Canada management Der caption continued right into Aon of the Industry have remained Loyal to their cause and could not for one moment accept the most unacceptable recommendations of the Thompson report. Or. Art Mauro counsel for the province of Manitoba has Given Bis expert opinion of the report especially it s recommendation to set up a subsidiary company to. Re place the air Canada Over haul base. That opinion de serves the free press consideration and support along with the rest of us who intend to press whatever Way necessary to keep what is ours. In regard to the freight facility Polar routes etc., these Are and were necessary Over and above the air Canada base situation. For anyone to delude themselves that we get the freight facility in return for the loss the overhaul base is sheer nonsense. Of course Winni Peg requires a new freight facility however it should have and built before now not held off in the vain attempt to convince those Hicks out West that we do have something for then in return for getting away with All those jobs for the people of Quebec. More Over the amount of employ ment generate d by the freight warehouse is so Small As to be insignificant in comparison to our overhaul base. If at some near future Date Winnipeg does not share in the tremendous growth that is taking place in our National airline then there will be a drastic death blow to Winni Peg of those 1000 jobs. Those 1000 jobs Are still Here permanent skilled employees Are continuing to be transferred but they Are being replaced by temporary personnel so that each Job so far is being preserved and no blows to our Economy have been Felt but if we allow that blow to come it surely will be severe for whether the employee is permanent or Long term he still has his effect on Mani Toba s Economy. Don Mills Winnipeg warfare men of science protest sir world wide preparation for biological warfare and the recent use of toxic chemical agents in Viet Nam have aroused the con Cern of leading american medical scientists. P h y s i Evans for social responsibility an o r g a n a t Ion of american doctors whose sponsors include some of the most prominent Nien in american Medicine recently initiated an article on Chemi Cal and biological weapons which was published in a leading medical journal. This article Calls attention to a tendency to regard the use of toxic gases As humane in comparison with napalm saturation bombing and nuclear weapons. The authors disagree with the Assumption that once Pandora s Box is open Only the most benign chemical and biological Wea Pons will come they Point out that chemical and biological weapons Are notoriously uneven in their dig Persal and therefore in the amount absorbed by each recipient to ensure that every person receives an incapacitating dose some will have to receive an overdose. Furthermore the Young the elderly and the infirm will be particularly susceptible the article reminds us of the. Position of the american government r i n g the second world War when president Franklin d. Roose velt said use of such weapons by o 1 o g i c a 1 and chemical has been outlawed by the general opinion of civilized Mankind. This coun try has not used them and i Hope that we never will be compelled to use i state categorically that we shall under no circumstances resort to the use of such weapons unless they Are first used by Wiir it is Clear from recent events that the position taken a president Roosevelt has been abandoned and a . Army Field manual fm-27 10 now in use instructs trainees that the . Is not a party to any treaty now in that prohibits or restricts the use in warfare of toxic or non toxic gases of smoke or incendiary materials or of bacteriological warfare. Last j a n u a r y another group o f d just anguished american physicians and Bio medical scientists released the following Public state ment we emphatically condemn the use of chemical agents for the destruction of crops by the . Forces in Viet Nam As recently re ported in the new York times of tuesday 21 de even if it can be shown that the chemicals Are not toxic to men such tactics Are barbarous because they Are indiscriminate they rep resent an attack on the entire population of the re Gion where the crops Are destroyed combatants and non combatants in the crisis of the second world War in which the direct threat to our country was far greater than any arising in Viet Nam today our government firmly resisted any proposals to employ chemical or biological warfare against our enemies. The fact that we Are now resorting to such methods shows a shocking deterioration of our moral standards. These attacks Are also abhorrent to the general standards of civilized Man kind and their use will earn us hatred throughout Asia and elsewhere. Such attacks serve More Over As a precedent for the use of similar but even More dangerous chemical agents against our allies and our selves. Chemical warfare is cheap Small countries can practice it effectively against us and will probably do so if we Lead the Way. In the Long run the use of such weapons by the United states is thus a threat not. An asset to our National Security. We urge the president to proclaim publicly that the use of such chemical Wea Pons by our armed forces is forbidden and to oppose their use by the South vietnamese or any of Bur we acting As individuals Birch society meeting Eye Ronald a won says we be been infiltrated by o Lunatic fully support the viewpoints expressed so eloquently by our eminent american col leagues. Their warnings have not been heeded and Chemi Cal warfare is being used in Viet Nam on an increasing scale. We Appeal to our fellow canadians to join us now in impressing upon our own government the urgency of protesting against the use of chemical biological or nuclear weapons in the War in Viet Nam or elsewhere. Drains sir Farmers at the Pas in dire need of drainage were promised the construction of adequate ditching this summer to Drain water from their land and to lower the water table in the area. A letter from the provincial director of lands confirms this Promise dated february both 1966. It has now been revealed that due to pump replace ment and changes in the drainage set up at a ditch pumping station there will be no finances available to construct the promised ditches in the project and. They have been postponed or entirely abandoned. It should be pointed out that the pump replacement and changes in the pumping system Are wholly due to the government installing obsolete equipment in the first place and constructing and pump ing from an inadequate ditch and Culvert system. The pumps should have been in stalled in the. Pas River originally and All drainage funnelled to this natural water course. Now in having to Correct it s mistakes it is going Back on it s Promise to the affected Farmers who face another year of water soaked land this is not a Case of reclaiming swamp land but rather is Bush land that needs a ditch through it at one mile intervals. Some of this land has been under lease for four and five years operated at a loss by those who have invested in it. Weather conditions have been Adverse but a Survey of the whole area was made in 1965 and if ditches were put in As indicted by this Survey trapped water could be drained off by the Farmer and the production potential of the area realized. As it is no one is benefiting from this land. Money seems to be Avail Able to the government to relieve water problems from Gimli to the bed River Valley Bot for the Northern area it is very limited. Or. Hutton was alerted to the local condition in the fall of 1965 at a meeting in the Carrot Valley Hall but no preparation was made with the resulting confusion and chaos this Spring. This is a project that should be completed now. S. J. Allen the Pas the free press Wel comes letters from its readers. Vultures sir i Hope you will receive scores of letters regarding the recent article entitled Vul Tures in far from being rare tur key Buzzards Are common place in Manitoba. They Are even larger than the article says having Wing spreads of up to six feet. They soar seemingly without Effort for Long periods of time teetering Back and Forth on motionless wings held in Dihedral. The Dihedral Post Tion of the wings distinguishes them from the Eagle which soars in Flat wings. These Birds Are Carrota eaters and Are particularly common around garbage dumps. Some years ago while holidaying at Nuti Mik Lake i took my daughter Margo on her birthday to the garbage dump to see the vultures. She has since frequently remarked to me that not every girl gets to be taken to a garbage dump on her birthday to see vultures. The vultures we see Here Are the same Birds As those seen in Florida. They Are really Manitoban the Young being born and raised Here and like other Manito bans spending their Winters in the South. I saw the first vulture ;
