Brace your. 35mm camera May have no shoe on which to mount an electronic Flash. Brackets attached to the camera May be awkward to use. But i doubt if you could persuade any re Pairman to mount the shoe permanently on your camera. It really in t necessary anyway. I realize that some of the Flash brackets Are awkward but not All of them fall into this category. Take a look at some of the brackets that have a vertical handle beside the camera body. The handle has a show in which the Flash unit fits. It is easy and convenient to use especially if you buy the deluxe models that have a built in Cable release with a trigger to fire the camera and Flash. Q. I want to expose my film at higher Asa Speed ratings. How do i go about it a. There Are two systems. With one you process the film yourself allowing for the Neces sary increase in developing time. With the other you must first find out if your photo finisher will push the development. Chances Are you will need to Send it to a custom lab or processor. To do it yourself you la need the customary Darkroom equipment such As a Daylight developing tank and thermometer. But you must know by How much time to increase development. Transport problems Tough by Victor Mackie Ottawa staff the Board of transport commis toners is struggling with the government s new transport policies and the enlarged new transport Board the Canadian transport commission in t expected to be formed until late fall. This transitional period poses Many problems for the old Board acting in a caretaker role until the new one is ready. Who will head the new Board is not yet known. Speculation has mentioned transport min ister j. W. Pickersgill and j. W. Baldwin his Deputy minister. The appointment will be made in the late fall. Originally the government had hoped to have the new Board operating in August. Meanwhile the old Board has to begin the government s new Era in transportation legislation it s handicapped because it does t have the staff to deter mine the compensatory level of rates which will be the new floor for railway tariffs. And i in t equipped to consider com plaints about overcharging from captive shippers. The Board will hold a pre hearing conference in Winnipeg aug. 8 on Branch line abandon ments. The decision was made for the pre hearing meeting rather than pushing ahead wit the rationalization of Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Prairie Branch line networks. A difficulty facing the boar is that any precedents i establishes May be upset late by the new commission. Doubts increasing on Canada s Advance there was a decrease in Public Confidence during the past seven years regarding Canada s Progress and development. In 1960, nearly six-in-10 people 56 per cent Felt Canada was developing satisfactorily. Today that ratio has dropped to less than five in -10 48 per cent. Conversely Mere persons today 32 per cent feel our country s Progress has not been As sound As it should have been. In 1960 Only a Quarter of the voters 25 per cent Felt this Way. Quebe cers 57 per cent show the most optimism about Canada s sound growth. The people from Ontario on the other hand Are More critical. Forty six per cent say Canada s development has been sound 44 per cent say it has not been sound. Music on Campus second concert of us tries by the co in us Kaitlon with the University at Manitoba tuesday at . The co la Alec orchestra Erie wild contactor and William aide pianist. In a program consisting of Edge of the world by John we Uwell con Certo no. 2 in a major by Franz Liszt mar Amschl for orchestra by Kelser Jones Waltz i perfumed breezes by Joseph Verlna and March no. 2 by Murray a Daikon. Liszt s second piano concerto is a work that is Apt to stand or fall by the Quality of the performance. If indifferently done one worries about the artificiality of its moods and emotions its rambling construction and rather turgid instrumentation. But it remains a Brilliant show piece for pianist and orchestra alike. In tuesday n performance apprehension faded away quickly by a stunningly adroit and exciting performance by Wil Liam aide perhaps the finest piece of pianist of a particular kind we have yet heard from him. From the very first series of sonorous arpeggios one sen sed that this was to be a remarkable event and that both soloist and conductor were of one mind in emphasizing the glowing romanticism that runs rampant through the work. At a certain Point the con Certo dominated by its opening theme becomes an unbroken series of kaleidoscopic effects of the most Brilliant and Ever changing kind. Of musical form of coherence there is less and less but of wonders of brilliancy and dazzling pianistic effects there is a riot of Flash ing color. I be suggested in the past that or. Aide is at his very Best in this kind of music. With the technical resources he demonstrably commands he did much to confirm my belief. The orchestra under Eric wild gave excellent support. Again there were enchanting individual effects a marvellously warm and beautifully fashioned Clar inet entry and a particularly charming lightly scored Dia Logue Between Solo cello and piano. The remainder of the concert was devoted to Canadian works that were Well contrasted mod est in their musical assumptions and As a consequence entirely acceptable and enjoyable on their own terms. I be always admired Weinzweig s Edge of the world which seems to me one of the Best and most original of Canadian tone Pic Tures. His use of Eskimo melodies the principal theme is majestically announced on the trombones is intriguing the scoring always fastidious. The Brevity and clarity of the piece is reinforced by passages of truly imaginative invention. It was Given a most persuasive performance and one enjoyed making its acquaintance again after a number of years. The Miramichi Ballad suite by Kelsey Jones in three movements based on Folk songs from new Brunswick was new to me. It possesses As attractive open air North american flav or cleverly imbibed and to a degree transfigured from the idiom of Ives and Copland. Rather cinematic in places it nevertheless is an attractive piece Well scored with considerable Beauty of line and a Good Deal of rhythmic interest especially in the crossed and combined rhythms of the final Section. Again the Csc orchestra was in excellent form with a beautifully phrased Cor Langlais Solo in the first Section and some Good brass cording in the finale. In sum a kind of Canadian equivalent to Vaughan Williams famous English Folk song suite. The final two pieces were of no musical consequence an orchestral Waltz by Venzina was entirely predictable. Every Ges Ture was familiar even to the Bridges Between the sections. Completely formula Ridden yet in a curious Way innocently charming. Murray Adaskin s smartly de signed rather Spiky and Dessi rated March no. 2 puzzled me. It surely cannot be suitable As something to March to neither does it appear from its title to celebrate anything in particular. It makes a certain Impact because of the evident skill in the scoring but i found it rather pointless. I Hazard a guess that it is taken from some episode of incidental music where it More properly belongs. A Fine concert Well disciplined playing from the orches tra and to say it again a rather spectacular achievement by the aide. Guest soloist William Carleton u purchases re College Ottawa up Carleton University is purchasing St. Patrick s College Here from the English oblate of Eastern can Ada for an undisclosed sum it was announced tuesday.
