Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 27, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free january 1968 Cost of education sir As a teacher i cannot help but reply to Grays letter 20 concerning the High pay and Ideal working conditions of teachers in Mani it is with amazement that i hear parents like complain bitterly about the teachers pay and the High school taxes when it really should be in their interest to acquire the Best possible teachers and schools to insure a meaningful and Reward ing education for their contrary to Grays teaching conditions Are far from Ideal in innovations in classroom design and management Are being studied and newer theories in education Are being explored in the form of Pilot courses in Many school districts in search of better teaching there definitely is a shortage of qualified teachers in As the statistics of the number of teachers teaching on a permit without a certify will Manitoba is not going to get the necessary qualified teaching personnel for a better education system with Grays Point of Manitoba has to raise the attractiveness of its teaching and one of the most effective methods of doing this is to present an inviting and flexible working conditions to Good if Gray wishes to discuss her Point of View with teachers or trustees i suggest that she Brush up on her knowledge of teacher certification in Gray states that a student can come out of High attend a Normal school for a few and then acquire a certificate and without any experience obtain a teaching i would very much like to know where a beginning like with Only a High school could land a Job that pays such a teachers Are simply not paid such an amount unless they have a University degree or a number of years of certification As a qualified teacher in Manitoba requires a minimum of two years experience in addition to what amounts to approximately 15 professional courses at the faculty of to put a curb on the activities of the Manitoba teachers As Gray suggests would be the same As preserving an antiquated educational system behind a China without a professional Organiza Tion like the its to promote increased professionalism through the raising of salaries i foresee Little Hope of a better system of parents could do with a Little less concern for having an Abun dance of Modem luxuries and could do with much More concern for the education that their children Are receiving in our Winnipeg Lund no easy Job sir we Are writing regarding a letter recently published in your newspaper concerning the proposed increase in teachers in the first no teacher coming directly out of education 1a which lasts for ten months receives a salary of s500 a teaching for a second we do not As yet receive that amount of As for teaching conditions throughout the they Are improving but Are not in the conditions Are very Good in the we Are not As Al though we Are not even in one year there has been a considerable amount of improvement thanks to the Manitoba teachers although it is True our so called summer vacation is most teachers take courses during this time to improve their ability to in for the first couple of years it is compulsory in order to receive permanent even after one receives courses Are still taken to further ones for those who think teachers have a Short and easy we must mention that work Day does not end at four work from school carries on for several hours considering the High Standard or work by most the taxpayers should be Only too willing to sacrifice a Little for the teachers who provide their childrens Martel Shakespeare bargaining precedent sir the 1968 schedule of compensation for Winnipeg teachers will create a precedent for All collective bargaining for the civic service for 1968 and years obviously our teachers or their representatives care Noth for the respect or esteem of pupils or the general they insist that the Community accept their philosophy that the Only right principle of action bum sir who does this fellow Boaler free 25 think he is he must be a new arrival for he Doest know what he is talking he can go Back to Scotland any time he wants canadians will be there he can hear All the burrs he wants maybe starve Beaulieu Winnipeg note perhaps Beaulieu should reread boilers he seems to have missed its distinctly satirical flavor on first read is that is the Only conclusion possible from the record of their attainment of a 19 per cent increase in 196667 and their present demand of another 13 per cent plus in creases in annual All this is predicated on the continuance of oneyear agree ments which ensure a wide open door for future our teachers have unrivalled Security denied to those of us subject to the fluctuations of the Economy permanence of pm provision for sick Freedom from dismissal without and Freedom from surely with these substantial advantages one could expect some consideration for those less Fortu Nate or have we been mistaken in the belief that higher Educa Tion connotes finer and Fuller appreciation of greater Community responsibility the last two years have seen some Relief in educational levies for the property but if our elected representatives accede to one half of our teachers demands that Relief will disappear or cause added imposition in some other Winnipeg John tooth Only the English sir thank you for publishing the letter from Betty and Arthur Fleming it refutes in no Uncertain terms the argument that even englishmen cant make a living in this country of now if Shirley Henville had consulted her husband before her letter to you probably never have been writ she states that they were not Why in the world did they Ever leave England with 23 years sex p e r i e n c e Why leave the seniority of the Job and expect to pick it up Here incomprehensible As it no new Comers to this land seem to crab about except the have you Ever heard a a a a a a greek complain of course not they Are Only too glad to get away not 610 sir in an article in the free 5 entitled no dispute Over you state that Churchill is 610 Miles North of this is the Point i would like to Clear up Churchill is Miles by i was led to believe the 610 mile figure until i came to Churchill in for 400 Miles plus 24 hours i waited to get to i have flown from Here to Winnipeg on trans air and it takes 4 to 4m hours flying i con tend that even by air it is More than 610 we at Churchill Are North Erners and we like to stay Hermanson Churchill from tyranny and oppressive measures they do not find in centuries of easy easy ways of come and go As you have apparently been bred into the Type of English immigrant that is doing squawk in just Haven enough red carpet for nor a Job for them As soon As they step off the boat or Tony Novak Winnipeg dodgers sir Gilbert Johnson said in a recent letter in your paper that canadians should encourage Young american draft dodgers to come to if these Young americans want to avoid going to Vietnam All they have to do is state when they Are drafted that they Are conscientious instead of doing they run out of their country and come up they do not object to Vietnam they object to serving their they should remember that if a country is Good enough to live in it is Good enough to these draft dodgers took everything the had to but when the wanted them to serve it they ran if Gilbert Johnson wanted to do this country a favor he should take the two professors he so and the draft and go to a communist no unless he is a communist or a should miss Hopkins Winnipeg French and proudly Canadian refreshing Northern thaw reply to a reviewer National film Board sir since silence is often interpreted As guilt i should like to defend my Case through your my the James Evans contains numerous Inci dents never before and these facts apparently so irked a doubting Thomas re viewer that he has made numerous damaging accuse note the review referred to appeared in the Winter 1967 Issue of the Hud sons Bay company the and was written by of the depart ment of University of he claims that the author is guilty of using not documents but a Crystal of a highly coloured version of a and that certain events have been construed and it is difficult to understand Why such a Book should Bear the imprint of the distinguished Ryerson these excerpts and in fact the whole tone of the Are calculated to under mine Public Confidence in a writer of Western Canadian and constitute a serious threat to the reputation and future literary earnings of a historical the professor did not share my ten year research on the subject and the publishers palaver sir i have intended Many times to write a letter to the but i have never had the motivation until this year when teachers salaries have been battered around so much by people who obviously know so i have seen the negotiated salary schedule of practically every school District and Divi Sion in the province of Mani to my know ledge in Manitoba can a teacher with one years training Start at a it is this kind of misinformation which gets so hard to teaching conditions in Mani Toba have improved in the past few years but they Are still far from there is no great influx of teachers from other provinces to this statement is reinforced by the recent trip by department of education officials to England to recruit teachers for Manitoba salaries asked by teachers May seem but they Are Only on a Par with those paid in other industries requiring a similar level of also part of the increase in costs claimed by the school boards of the province is due to the expansion of the school i also read not on the front Page where the non teaching staff of the Winnipeg school division is asking for an increase of Over 20 per but there was no Large amount of noise made about this teachers seem to be the whipping boy More so than other civil servants for the general if the people that Are complaining Are so smart Why dont they try teaching about 35 students in one and lets see How Well they i suppose by now you have gathered that i am a teacher and not too Happy with All the palaver that is going when some one complains about teachers salaries i like to did you refuse your last raise in pay Richard Holder decision not to include a lengthy bibliography excluded any possibility of Access to my source but this does not deter the he devotes two columns of his four column review to telling the Story in full thereby making Reading the Book happily movie and theatre reviewers Are More columns three and four outline the authors and the Public is advised that the Book has Little but cautionary value for the student of Western Canadian the professor chooses to ignore the opening sentence of the books preface there has been no deviation from any Date or event recorded in the original diaries and journals kept by the characters by their own words they have either condemned or condoned their by placing Middle Church in 1840 Midway Between the red River settlement and the lower fort Garry the author is accused of not having a very firm grasp of the historical geography of the red River the author would be most grateful for a More specific the professor finds a curious passage about Queen Vic Tobias wedding but he does not leaving the Reader with the impression that the author has taken liberties with no Crystal Ball or invented dialogue was for this event was Well covered by the newspapers of the a boo reviewer must be a very special individual if he is to perform a valuable service to the Reading and most of them Are competent and under but his knowledge of the subject must be equal if not greater than that of the and when he encounters state ments contrary to prior inform he ought at least to approach the Book with an open of course he could avoid All risk of misunderstanding by contacting the author for confirmation of new facts but what writer has Ever heard of such heresy the reviewers ignorance of the writers source material is not License to doubt and no one denies a boo critic the right to voice his opinions or questions his duty to Point out errors concerning historical events and personalities if he can substantiate his condemn for a reviewers analysis of a Book has value Only when that analysis is based on this cannot be the Case when the authors work is attacked by one who has no knowledge of the writers research in any other Craft or profession when a members Liveli Hood is threatened by derogatory Public comments some recourse is open to surely the writer is entitled to similar Nan Shipley fort Garry simpler divorce sir in glad to see that our government has finally wakened up by widening and broadening our divorce dont get me i believe with All my heart that marriage is the greatest institution and the most sacred obligation meant by the purpose of the govern ment is to Correct and remove yet As the Only Legal grounds for breaking up a has been an injustice to our society for too Many marriages Are broken Down Long before a person thinks of resorting to or As the Only Way out of an intolerable with the widening of the divorce Laws Many people will be saved from breaking our moral the Laws most of us hold most dear to our i dont know which Laws can be More unjustifiable than t to s e that bind people together and Force them to live in with indifference with no Hope for better or the very Laws that prohibited a broken marriage As a Means to end a speaking from my own when can the the free press Wel comes letters from its correspondents must be concise All letters Are subject to editing for names will be withheld Only in the editors anonymity is every whether the writer wishes his name used or must be signed and must show the return the free press cannot undertake to return unused Law be called Justice when it decries the very needs of hundreds of people who find themselves with a broken marriage yet have no grounds for a Legal separation nor a divorce As an individual who suffered in a broken who lived in a broken marriage that was a mockery to to to our How thankful i am today for if they find themselves with a broken will have the Chance to leave their marriage with some How Small the Price of a divorce would have been if the divorce Laws had wider compared to the suffering i endured Peter be sky Winnipeg inflexible sir Maurice westerns facile endorsement of Paul Hellyer in a recent Issue of your paper rings a rather false we All appreciate the exalted position of Cabinet members in a Leader ship but this should not Blind a polished political observer like Western to his obvious shortcomings As a pos sible prime Hellyer May cast Asper Sions upon an untried Eric but exactly what has the minister of transport achieved he conveniently vanished from the scene before the unification of the armed forces was even much less proven to be the Success he promised it would his willingness to stand on principle smacks too much of right or this stubborn inflexibility would Lead to that this will ring unfavourable Bells in the minds of our Liberal candidates seems a foregone Freda Tan sir i would like to reply to Andy Anabess of Thompson who had a letter in the free i Felt very sad for Anabess because he obviously does have prejudices despite his affirmation to the we Are not a Small erratic group but a group of More than six million much technology sir i was interested in the two articles in your paper on 27 and 28 by Tim Traynor about the British French he said that the project was the Only Way Europe can catch up with the americans in technology and he mentions electronics and nuclear Well that is All rubbish the British built the first Jet but for the fact that the materials were too weak the British would have led the the British built the first computer and when the Lawrence Seaway was being designed British computers were used on that then there was not a single computer in use in the the British built the first radio the first the first vertical Takeoff the British Are leading the Way in nuclear Power generating stations and their radar and navigation techniques Are being used All Over the even in the let there be no the is the greatest techno logical country in the world today and will be for some time to come but Only while most other countries cannot exploit their techniques to the when you travel in a Boeing 707 or 727 or a pcs or the engines Are All manufactured by Roll Royce and that is True of 50 per cent of the airliners in the i will agree that most coun tries cannot afford to spend As great sums of Money on technology As the but they do have the Nicholls f More homogeneous than the rest of and i will remind you that it is a third of the total population of whether you want to face it or we Are French we want to talk French and we will talk the 1867 British North America i cant see the word so its not truly Canadian guaranteed us some rights French is an official we May in All Liberty raise our children in educate them in be judged in French and pass our Laws in read article if you deny us those you show that the san act is not Good and should be but if you think that the present confederation is just and then give us our this May come to you As a but when we see a Canadian our hearts Are full of Pride and we stand because we love can this is our so please try to forget that old cliche that French canadians want to destroy this is not we want a better Canada and Are seeking ways of achieving that no doubt you want a better Canada but you cannot blame if sometimes we think we might be better on our own and if sometimes we seem so eager to use the easiest solution for both French and English canadians if you do not want As we do not want then let us work out a True and just based on natural Equality and i had the Opportunity of travelling on the Prairies and of talking to a lot of i was gladly sur prised at the understanding they have of the present and i was even More surprised at their readiness to talk things Over so if or any want to talk things i will be very glad to do i Hope that better understanding for both will arise from such Richard aude Lapointe our future Hope sir newspaper headlines and articles Are emphasizing the unsavoury actions and attitudes of what seems to represent the Norm for Young people when there is a noteworthy gathering of Young people who earnestly seek to improve themselves and to make a worthwhile contribution to it is completely a Case in Point is the eighth inter varsity missionary convention held at the University of Illinois Campus under the auspices of the inter varsity Chris Tian Fellowship during Christ Mas nine thousand Stu dents from All Over America gathered to learn about the Mission of christs thousands of Young people made a Complete commitment to Jesus obeying christs divine go into All the world and preach the gospel to the whole the theme of the convention was gods from All to All the convention challenged Many Young people to engage them selves in the lords at Home or ministering to the and spirit Ual needs of the Conven Tion was interdenominational and uncompromisingly evangel ical in recognizing that mans outstanding need is spiritual and can be met Only in this gathering of Stu dents was not characterized by protest draft card or the these kids were not looking for said japanese missionary Akira you Are the of the crop of americas i regret that i have seen no news release about this Conven it is unfortunate that violence and perverted Ness Are Given sensational headlines and considered newsworthy when no coverage is Given to the Stu dents who spent four Days of their holidays determining to do something about the and spiritual needs of the front pages Are exemplifying americas lost youth the who seem to be the future mean while ignoring the Hope that is in our other the youth who Are our future Hope in proclaiming a Saviour who is the Only Hope for a lost world Jesus Allan Kroeker the Bogle mennonite Brethren collegiate Institute Winnipeg punishment sir you concluded your editorial of by stating that University students convicted for drug offences under the criminal code should be and staff members so convicted should be by this assume you also oppose University Extension courses being offered to Many convicted of crimes More serious than smok ing you would prob ably also oppose the admission of a convicts to or even and does not your statement that staff members should be fired contrast with your Edito rials and articles urging employers to hire a convicts your agreement with this double punishment system can Only mean you agree that not Only but University staff members Are second class Roy Eldridge fort Garry pro Winters sir i have read your editorial concerning Robert Winters res ignation with a great Deal of interest because it has been my private conviction for some time that he is the Only possible contender for Liberal leadership who has the stature to bring Canada into its not since 1957 has the Canad an voter been offered a dynamic personality for prime minist Winters is the Only person in any political party today that appeals to me As a persecution sir having heard of the cruel treatment of miss Bertha of for such a Small offence being kind to dumb creatures cruelly treated by others i hereby wish to express my indignation at her persecution by her and their deprivation of her there should be More like her in this harsh surely her neighbors could find something More important to vent their hatred and to make life More pleasant for and for the Bertha Rands who hate Hanson and speak As a politically uncommitted Winters announced his plans to resign in a televised interview on Csc with the statement that he had received several Hundred letters asking that he run but that no draft had resulted and he said it with a Trace of i still believe he could be persuaded to run if he saw enough if you know some liberals that Are willing to commit everything to his cause i wish youd put me in touch with i could very easily become a heavily committed Liberal for Robert Winters Lovell Swan Bridge sir i noticed your about engineers building a foot floating Bridge in 52 the Royal Canadian Engi neers of 2nd built a floating feet in Over the Rhine at on March in approximately 24 Carlisle ;
