Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - February 6, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba 16 Winnipeg free press tuesday february 6, 1968 Gordie Howe s hockey one of the most honest hockey players in the National hockey league to my Way of thinking is Dean Prentice. red wings Are fortunate to have him. I have my own nickname for him the old somehow it fits him although he certainly is not that old. In fact he was just 35 this past october and is now in his 16th nil season. Since coming to wings late in the 1965-66 season from the Boston Bruins along with defence Man Leo Boivin he s played a lot of hockey for us. matter what line you put him on he does a Good solid Job on left Wing. During his seasons with the new York rangers and with the Bruins i always considered him a standout player and that is not a statement based on Hindsight or foresight. It s just a candid opinion that i be always held of Prentice and i think anyone who has watched him play will agree with me. With wings this season he s As Good or better than he has Ever been and i m sure hell become a 300-goal scorer before he quits. Going into this season he had a career total of 265, so he s not that far away. And i m sure he can get his 20 or better this season although he was having some trouble around the net Early in january. When i say Prentice is an honest hockey player i mean that he has a Pride in what he does. There Are some players who Are concerned with Only what they can get out of hockey. Dean is not one of them. Like everybody else he is concerned of course with what he gets for playing the game. But what is More important he is concerned with what he can put. Into the game. Prentice has had a rough time in the National league with injuries too. Perhaps there is no better yardstick with which to measure him than to Point out that twice he has had his Back broken since playing in the nil. It was t until he broke his Back the second time that he found Iii that he had fractured it second serious injury came on dec. 27, 1964, and it put him out for the balance of the a neck to Waist cast for 13 weeks there was an ironic or an almost believe it or not twist to the second injury. He scored on a penalty shot minutes after the injury for goal no. 14 of the season. The penalty shot was awarded when Chicago s Stan Mikita pulled his skates from under him while he was breaking in on goal. He skidded into the boards with his Back taking the Brunt of the blow. I did t realize until i was Back on the Bench that my Back was he recalled in. Discussing the incident with us recently. They took me to the Hospital for a rays and that s when they found i had broken my Back once before. In fact the doctor told me my Back was in a Prentice claims today that his Back has never Felt better. I said it before but i la say it again he a never played better. Mcleod tries out revised lineup it by Carl Mollins Grenoble up coach Jackie Mcleod drove Canada s olympic hockey squad through a stiff practice monday night in a warm up for the team s tournament opened today against West Germany. Mcleod skating with the players and giving them individual advice at close Range was testing a somewhat revised lineup. Gave away three goals that should not have said Rev. David Bauer the team adviser. I d hate to say who is our no. 1 goalie right now. Nei ther has been too Sharp although West Germany is considered a weak sister Iii the eight team championship Divi Sion Mcleod has been remind ing his squad that there has been at least one big upset in every recent world or olympic hockey tournament. While the canadians have been having defensive prob lems the forwards have been shooting Well since arriving in Europe a week ago. Meanwhile Bunny Ahearne Boss of the european ice hockey federation held a news conference at which he picked the defending Champion soviet Union to win the olympic tournament. He also warned the referees to Rule strictly by the Book if they want to see further action and reviewed the rules for breaking ties in the standings. Canada Sweden Czechoslovakia the United states mixed female reaction for olympic sex tests East Germany West Germany and Finland. As usual a Victory will count two Points in the standings for the tournament in which each country meets the others once. A tie counts one Point. In the event of two teams being tied on said Ahearne the team that won the game in the match involving the two teams be named the top one. If the match happened to be a tie then the position will be decided by deducting goals against from goals scored and the team with the biggest differ ence will be placed on top. If that system fails to work out the deadlock then it will be decided on goal the goal average is calculated by dividing goals against into goals scored and the team with the better average is placed higher. If three or More teams Are tied for one spot Only the goal records will be compared first by goal spread and then if Nec Essary by goal average. Tie breaking was an important Factor in the 1964 olympics won by Russia with seven straight victories. Canada Sweden and Czecho Slovakia ended in a tie with 10 Points each from five victories and two losses. Sweden got the Silver medal because it had a goal spread of by Bruce Levett Canadian press sports editor Grenoble France a women Alpine skiers at the 1968 Winter olym Pic s Are both amused and chagrined at hav ing to submit to saliva tests to determine their sex. . In such sports As gymnastics and tile modern the team would be considered com prised of individuals and the ruling on dope would not apply collectively it said.
