Thomson Castries up the. Tropical life is a pleasant one. For 70 Canadian teachers working on Caribbean islands. On Canadian salaries too. But it s not All Sun and Sand. The teachers must overcome problem s such As teachers with out training schools without capital pupils without books. The teachers on 10 common wealth Caribbean islands and in Guyana on the coast of South America Are paid by Canada As part of its external Aid program for developing countries. Half Are teaching in schools a few Are attached to ministries of education and the rest Are instructing at teachers colleges. Those interviewed in Jamaica St. Kitts and St. Lucia say they enjoy the Island life with few personal problems but they find it depressing trying to teach without adequate facilities and to improve teaching stand Ards with inadequate resources. Most of the native teachers being trained in the colleges were Only 12 or 14 years of age when they were placed in charge of elementary grades. It is As difficult for them to renew an interest in learning As it is for them to encourage then own pupils to learn. Some Lack books there Are not enough schools and local governments cannot afford further financial assist Ance. Many pupils in some districts Are too poor to buy either books or writing materials libraries Are almost non existent and there is Little of the equip ment necessary to run an Ade quate education system. The canadians say it is difficult to encourage students to learn when they have no books to read to teach pupils who have neither Pencil nor paper and to improve school programs without equipment. The education system itself modelled on the British system of classical education is aimed in the. Wrong direction they say. While construction and Industry in the islands Are being encouraged there is Little technical training available to produce badly needed skilled workers. The stands have Many qualified lawyers1 and doctors who completed their education in British Canadian or . Universities but there is a shortage of Engi neers. More help needed overcoming the educational deficit i the islands is a vast Job the canadians say. Canada contributes millions of dollars each year in Grants and Loans offers hundreds of scholarships Canadian universities or the University of the West indies sends professors instructors and technical has built schools in Antigua Domini Ca and Grenada. Further help is provided by Canadian University students overseas which has volunteers working in the schools for local pay. But it is not enough to meet the need. The canadians drawn from almost every province say a great Deal More could be done by organizations and individuals in Canada. They Point to Ontario s program of collecting used and discarded books and equip ment for donation to the islands As one that should be expanded. It is particularly valuable if the Aid is concentrated on a sin Gle Island As a project especially if shop and technical training equipment is included and if it is sent for distribution through teachers colleges rather than through government ministries. They suggest that advice on this kind of project be sought from the external Aid office of the department of external affairs in Ottawa which has information on col Leges exist in the Caribbean.
