Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - March 5, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press tuesday March 5, 1968 military Confidence oozing continued but in recent Days Many american observers Here Are beginning to have Sec Ond thoughts about the tactical and strategic advantages of Khe Sanh. Defences damaged the steady enemy Artil Lery barrage has damaged some defensive r positions and the incoming rounds have kept Khe Sanh s mar Ines from working effectively on constructing bunkers and trenches. The enemy artillery directed at the runway has hampered re Supply flights now most of the big four engined trans ports Airdrop their cargoes rather than Landing on the runway. The Low Clouds Mist and fog have seriously affected air operations Over Khe Sanh Valley drastically reducing the number of fighter bomber sorties against enemy positions. The fog also., prevents helicopter operations during parts of the Day and it would be next to impossible to Hel lift Large scale reinforcements on weathered in Days. Because of the heavy enemy presence the mar Ines no longer patrol much from Khe Sanh and their Lack of activity plus the Low lying fog has enabled the enemy to move dangerously close to the Khe Sanh perimeter a s Gen. To Nguyen Giap s Viet Minn troops did at Dien Bien Phu. In recent Days the North vietnamese have built up troop strength in other areas along the demilitarized zone. Thus if a major attack on Khe san were accompanied by thrusts at other bases in the area the reinforcements originally ticketed for Khe Sanh might not then be available. There is still another ominous note . Officials fear that the enemy May make use of a red Eye heat seeking missile. This is a russian made ground to air missile fired by a single Soldier and designed to strike Down Canada blasts Gabon continued he found it strange that when president de Gaulle of France made his c i t y a a 11 Balcony speech in Montreal last sum Mer All he received was a bit of a slap on the or. Pearson tabled Canada s protest note in the commons monday. It was handed to the gabonese embassy in washing ton feb. 19 Over external affairs minister Martin s Signa Ture. Gabon has no embassy Here. Education minister Jean Guy Cardinal of Quebec attended the feb. 5-10 conference in Libre Ville and the Host country flew the Quebec Flag in his Honor. Ottawa informants claimed that France manipulated Gabon during the entire Inci Dent. An external affairs depart ment source said Gabon claimed it was acting in Accord with the Canadian Constitution when it sent the invitation directly to Quebec City. This position was echoed in the statement issued monday night by Premier Johnson which said the Quebec govern ment maintains that it possesses the International extensions of its internal it is therefore Normal that certain foreign governments de siring to maintain relations with Quebec within certain Fields of its internal jurisdiction communicate directly with the govern ment of aircraft. It is now believed to be available to Gen. Giap s forces. . Military men do not like to contemplate the damage that 50 or 100 red eyes deployed around Khe Sanh could wreak on . Air planes and helicopters. Thus the buoyant optimism expressed by some . Generals Over the Khe Sanh situation a few weeks ago is Seldom heard now. But Gen. William c. Westmoreland and his top Marine commanders still believe Khe Sanh is not Only tenable but represents a Opportunity to inflict grievous losses on an elusive enemy. However other observers military and civilian alike Are beginning to question whether the marines now dug in at Khe Sanh could not be More effective elsewhere. And these observers worry that Khe Sanh like Dien Bien Phu has taken on a psychological and political importance that far outweighs its tactical and strategic value. Perhaps Only a major North vietnamese attack will determine whose assessment is Correct Gen. Westmoreland s or those who doubt the imperative for defending Khe Sanh. Greene Stanfield Duel continued Saskatchewan department of highways and transportation special bulletin on Road restrictions effective in the near future and for such periods As May be required Load restrictions will be imposed on the provincial Highway system thereby limiting the maximum Gross weight of vehicles travelling thereon. Notice of restriction or restriction changes will be published in All Saskatchewan newspapers. Dave Boldt minister of highways and transportation. A major Factor was the abject failure of this government to control credit had become increasingly difficult for Farmers to obtain since the government lifted the ceiling on the chartered Bank loan interest rates. Or. Greene said the opposition Leader had not taken time to Check his facts. The real in come of Farmers had increased at the same rate of those in other sectors of the Economy since the liberals took office. The minister said wheat exports in 1968 reached a record bushels bringing to the Farmers. This compared with the conservatives record in bushels brought or. Stanfield said a govern ment Blunder left Canada with out the guarantee of a world wheat agreement. There had been three differ ent National Dairy policies in the last three years thus destroying Confidence. He said threatened trouble at the port of Montreal could fur ther Hurt the movement of Grain which was already lagging. A Basic premise of the government was that the number of Farmers must be reduced and the size of farm units increased. However said or. Stanfield there is evidence that the Besl use of land will require More Farmers in the future than at to the charge that the govern ment is forcing Farmers out of business or. Greene said thai Between 1961 and 1966 about farms went out of eco nomic production. Dow won majorities in each of the four communities to offset the narrow victories aimed by or. Rose a 47-year old Farmer from Bun Clody in he Rural areas in spite of the fact that Many areas of the Riding have had As Many As six elections since the All 84 per cent voters in the constituency Cas ballots. Or. Dow won the allegiance of 46.1 per cent a gain of five or cent Over his vote in 1966 or. Rose received 42.3 per Ceni of the vote and or. Sawatsky garnered 11.6 per cent the Liberal win was mos impressive in or. Dow s Hom town of Boissevain where he swept every poll and emerged with a 360-vote Lead Over or Rose. In Hartney Deloraine and Killarney where conservative majorities have been the Rule be also won narrow victories. Killarney fortress of conservative strength in the past surprised most Neutral observers by handing or. Dow a 35 vote plurality. It was generally conceded that the former Boissevain mayor would probably make gains in the town largest in the constituency because Many r e s id e n t s were disgruntled with conservatives of initiating the court action which nullified the june 1966, election that sent or. Dow to the Manitoba legislature. The court ruling resulted in a blot on the name of the returning officer in 1966, Arthu Mcknight because he a accused of corrupt practices even though he was guilty Only of several technical irregularities. Since or. Knight was a Loya conservative and a respect citizen of Killarney it a expected Many conservative would show their irritation a the polls. But no one not even the liberals predicted a Liberal plurality in the Community. A Gleeful Manitoba Liberal Leader Gil Mol Gat contacted at his Home monday evening credited the court decision As part of the. Reason for the Liberal win. But it was also a Combina Tion of other added or. Mol Gat. Lack of Confidence in the government As Well As the treatment of the return ing officer and the sitting member or. Although he admitted that he said it would be the first Opportunity some of the people would have to voice an opinion on his leadership the Premier also claimed that local situations entered the picture As Well. He said he was gratified at the increased strength shown in the Rural areas but he regret Ted that More gains had not been made in the towns. It was simply an election and we fought the Good fight and lost. This is just a preliminary. It just Means that Well have to prepare ourselves More adequately for the main bout when it an acknowledge an apology for accusing the United states of complicity in the Middle East War. Another step mentioned Las been . Compensation the .. Consulates general in port said and Alexandria which egyptian mobs Tore into. Before monday s admission col. Nasser s government made another initiative in order to encourage More americans to spend tourist dollars in Egypt t publicly announced that . A Nidrist would be Welcome even if they were jewish and even ii their passports bore visas for neighbouring Israel. Col.
