The Melee was the result of a decision by Ulrich which resulted in Brandon getting its third goal and starting a comeback in the late stages of the game climaxed by the tying goal with Only 23 seconds remaining. In another league playoff game Edmonton Oil Kings scored two third period goals to snatch a 4-3 Victory from Saskatoon Blades before fans in Saskatoon. With Moose jaw leading 4-2 at the 15 minute Mark and a face off called in the canucks end Ulrich dropped the puck without a Moose jaw player in the face off Circle. Brandon s Jack Wells skated in almost unhindered on Ken Brown and slapped in his own rebound. Ulrich dropped the puck after warning canucks a couple of times about their delaying the game with numerous line shifts by manager coach Brian Shaw. Shaw was restrained after the game by his players before he could reach Ulrich and no penalties were assessed. Police were needed to Stop the fracas Between fans and players. The tie left the series still in temporary control of Moose jaw who Lead two games to one. The tying goal was scored by Chuck Kelner just As Brandon goalie Ted Temple was heading for the Bench. Concentration Saskatchewan s unbeaten Larry Mcgrath right and his third Darlene Hill watch the action intently during game with Alberta s Bucky Tochinsky. Manitoba drops two despite skip s feats but for two last Rock Sion shots by his opposition Roland s super Farmer Jim Hodgson would be 2-0 today instead of 0-2. It would have been the most incredible 2-0 record Ever achieved and somebody would have demanded an investigation. You la never get Jim to admit it but he would have got More support out of a worn out Girdle than he did from his teammates during the first two rounds of the 1968 National mixed play Downs. Percentage Wise Hodgson matched Alberta skip Bucky Tochinsky shot for shot and he out curled Ontario s Peter con Nell. But if they gave extra Points for doubles hits and Rolls and freezes it would have been no contest in either Case. J he rolled in a Rock from a i foot in front of the House arid scored a key Deuce against Ontario. To make the shot that much More difficult he had to bump the Rock in far enough to beat out two Ontario biters and Roll in the shooter. And he Drew to the four foot coldly facing three on the ninth end against Alberta to head Home one up. Ironically the shot that Actu ally beat him was a missed wide open takeout on the eighth end one of the few shots of any description Hodgson failed to j make on an exceptionally Fine Day in the Hack. Had he passed out the Alberta shot it would have Given him a 6-4 Lead and the Hammer. Instead Tochinsky tied it up. But even on the last end Hodgson still appeared to be in control As his rink came up with one of its fms solid perform ances. The Manitoba Champion was lying two in the eight foot with a Short guard when Alberta s excellent third Bernie Boom Boom Hunter turned the end around with a perfect draw behind cover. Hodgson opened it up with his first Rock but Tochinsky Cov ered it up again. Hodgson tried to freeze to the shot Rock but just moved it Over and rolled into the open. I Tochinsky playing delicate weight moved it out for the game winning pair. J while he admitted the strategy of guarding his shot Rock rather than drawing in a second counter could have backfired on him. Bucky Rea soned that under the Circum stances it was the percentage shot. I had t been drawing that he grinned and i thought i could reach the 12-foot and guard my he pointed out that he would have needed a Good piece of the eight foot to make the shot count and there was always the possibility of a double kill. The Way Hodgson was Curling indeed there was. But had the guard not been letter perfect the Alberta rink probably could have kissed Victory goodbye. Against Ontario Hodgson appeared to have tilings locked up. He had two rocks straddling the eight foot when Peter con Ell went to throw his last Rock. Rather than try the hit and stick Connell elected to draw to the four foot. Precisely that was where the Rock . With better support from the Interior of his rink however Hodgson never would been in that position. There were 19 Complete misses behind him against Ontario and 16 half shots. In the game against Alberta his mates missed 21 shots and made seven half shots. Hodgson personally had Only two Complete misses against Connell and five against Al Berta although a couple were extremely difficult shots. Second John Bartley had probably the poorest Day in his competitive career Curling Only slightly above 50 per cent on the Day. Usually a steady hitter Bartley had Broom problems. So did Hodgson s wife Marion at third. She was Only 47 per cent against Alberta and an even 50 against Ontario. Lead Arlene Bartley held up her end Curling 75 per cent and 63 per cent. In both cases she out shot her opposite. But Here the advantage ended. Front rings Tochinsky s third Bernie is the wife of Edmonton Junior Oil Kings owner Bill Hunter most of Roland and surrounding area turned out to see their favorite curler put on his outstanding one Man show Scotty Harper noted rather painfully the Lack of the Sweet sounds of the bagpipes at the opening Cere monies instead a band took part in the colourful opening ceremonies but a sole Piper was on hand to pipe in the curlers for the night draw under mixed rules each rink is allowed ten minutes practice on a Sheet other than the one they re scheduled to play on it s an idea advocated by a lot of the local fraternity Cha president Bui Lumsden Drew to the four foot with the ceremonial opening Rock. Don Blanchard by Don Blanchard whoever suggested Curling was a game of inches probably made the colossal understate ment of All time. The breadth of a soggy cigarette paper was the differ ence Between Saskatchewan and Alberta monday night in the second round of the fifth annual Canadian mixed championships for the o Keefe cup at the hospitable Heather club in St. Boniface. Defending Champion Larry Mcgrath of Kindersley sask. Brushed a guard with a tense last Rock draw to the four foot Circle to Edge Alberta s Bucky Tochinsky 5-4 in an Early meeting of the pre favourites. On the basis of yesterday s first two rounds there May not be anybody left in the Field capable of handling the smooth firing wheat province machine. Unless of course it s Mani Toba s Jim a one Man gang from Roland who stole the individual show monday but came away a nifty handed. Supported shabbily generally Hodgson turned in a spectacular array of hits and Rolls doubles and freezes but dropped a pair of last Rock 7-6 games to Alberta and Ontario. The twin reversals air snuffed out Hodgson s winning although the event is still Young. Unless he does an about face it s difficult to conceive Mcgrath losing More than one game although hell still have to reckon with some Stern opposition. Today Saskatchewan is drawn against the Only other undefeated rinks in the Competition Quebec 2-0 and British Columbia the Quebec rink skipped by Earl Carson from the Canadian forces base at Bagotville authored the Only Surprise of the Day by stealing a 5-4 win Over Northern Ontario s Bill Tetley who two years ago came within an Ace of winning the mixed. Carson who has already picked up a solid following i supporters Here partially hid behind a guard with his last Rock and Tetley wrecked on the guard. It came.
