Gib bings indicate Grain receipts at the country elevator level Are running about 75 per cent of the level for last year with the re sult Canadian wheat stocks now Are about 40 per cent higher than last year. This Means unless exports pick up dramatically in the next few months delivery opportunities will be fairly serious limited by congestion in elevators this coming said the Pool president. Unfortunately i cannot be optimistic about the possibility of a very significant step up in the Pace of he also said while Farmers Are receiving a larger initial payment upon delivery this will mean tie total Dollar Factor of their final payment next year will be drastically reduced. This anticipated drop in Cana Dian wheat exports of bushels can be expected to pro Duce a reduction of More than to the Economy of Westefer Canada he said. I Don t need to tee you How quickly this kind of reduction affects our entire he said. You know of the Irene scale layoffs introduced by the railways in recent months. The Case revolves about the deaths of m a r i e a o u i s e de grandpre 74, of Berthierville 60 Miles East of Montreal and Normand Sauve 46, and Pierette Riverin 31, both of Mont real. By George Wilson Dong t a m Vietnam special the battalion commander up in his helicopter could Tell from studying the Rice Paddy what Charlie had been up to the night before. He pointed to two Pencil thin lines in what looked like a Golf Green from 500 foot Altitude. The lines were the kind a Golf Ball makes As it Rolls Over a dewy Green. See said . Eric Antila commander of a mechanized battalion there were two Guys who walked to the Road and Back. A Farmer zigzags around the Field. He does t leave a Trail like what the two Viet Cong did As col. Antila and his men reconstructed the pre Vious night s activity was lie in the dark beside the Road until they were sure the americans had not spotted them. The Road is actually a two Lane causeway of packed dirt across the Fields. The Elevation of the Road enables Viet Cong lying beside it to remain undetected at night. Every time there was covering noise like the Boom of 105 millimetre howitzers from col Antila base Camp in a Field nearby the Viet Cong would dig into the Side of the Road. They pushed boards in to keep their Tunnel from collapsing. The dirt is soft so it did not take the Viet Cong Long to make a Small Tunnel half Way under the Road. Once they finished the two Viet Cong saboteurs put about 200 pounds of explosive in the Tunnel then it was just a matter of lighting the fuse and ing off into the night. Holes in Road the next morning col. Antila and his men were greeted with gaping holes in the Road right outside their base Camp. Two of the holes on this particular morning went All the Way across the Road. There were also a number of smaller holes. Col. Antila s base an Island of War machines in a sea of Rice Fields a few Miles from Here had plenty of equip ment for filling in the holes. That was the easy part. Charlie As the troops Call the Viet Cong had made the Job much harder by putting mines and1 Home made Booby traps All along Road As Well. Sabotaged stretch was Only about a mile Long. But since that mile is part of route 4, the vital Road Way linking Saigon with the. Delta s food Supply Charlie had achieved his objective. There Are no alternate routes or ways to set up detours. So traffic on route 4 had to Stop until col Antila s men cleared their dangerous mile. South vietnamese engineers started at one end of the mined mile of Roadway and americans at the other. It took them seven hours of the most nerve shattering work. One american Soldier touched a wire off the Side of the Road. A mine blew up in his face killing him instantly and wounded five of his buddies. There is no Quick Way to do this. Work. Charlie is burying his explosives too deep to detect by conventional mine detectors. So it is a matter of men picking along Inch by Inch. Produce Waits trucks of produce wait in the hot Sun while the troops work along. Fish from the Delta Are transported in water tanks. They stay alive in the tanks if the trip to Saigon does not take too Long. The Viet Cong Sabo Tage Means the fish die on the Road helping to push Saigon s prices. Up some More. Col. Antila and his men Are doing everything they can to safeguard the Road. soldiers sweep the paddies on either Side of the Road by Day set up am Bushes at night and bomb suspected Viet Cong concentrations with every weapon in the american Arsenal. The battalion commander on one typical Day this week employed 300 men and a score of armoured personnel carriers three batteries of artillery a South vietnamese company of about 60 engineers and american company of 120 engineers All to keep this Small stretch of Road open. Besides those forces under his direct control col. Antila called in air strikes. The consist in a typical Day of three f-100 Jet fighters accompanied by a Light plane to spot the target and two gunship teams of two armed Heli copters each. The of Loos drop 750-pound" bombs and the gunships Spray the landscape with machine guns and rockets. Despite All this Effort on the Candy the nickname for route 4, the Road has been kept open on this stretch for an average of Only three hours a Day these last few weeks. Col. Antila figures it May be As few As 60 guerrillas causing All the trouble. They could be hiding in bunkers posing As Farmers by Day or slipping in on the buses that travel along route 4. It would seem that some of that fancy detection gear Pentagon research chiefs brag about would make the Job of the troops easier. What detection equipment that has shown up in the Delta like Rifle Scopes which can see in. The dark by Starlight does help. But advanced radar and Senory gadgets have not teen employed in Force in the Delta. Saboteurs or not Gen. William c. Westmoreland has ordered route 4 secured. The top military commander in Vietnam wants this stretch of the Road secured by March 15. This is so route 4 can be paved All the Way i from Saigon to its terminus in the Delta by May 1, the Start of the Rainy season.
