By Jeffrey varsity choir improves school of music concert by the University of Manitoba choir con ducted by William with piano duets Susan Ingram and Kirin Redekopp wednesday noon. Prog ism psalm psalm 23 Schubert night by Schubert i love my love Arr. Hit psf the Blue Bird by Stanford fasting i watch by new love Bong Waltzes by Brahms. A Good Deal of improvement Vasi evident in this performance by the varsity choir Over their previous concert last year. Tie choir on this occasion Aii. Conducted by a promising doling conductor in the person if William Janzen. Taken As a whole the choral work was sure footed the chord ing quite precise and the Dic Ilion and tuning of a very excellent Standard indeed. There were however a numer of instances where changes of tonal dynamics were heeded it somehow seemed imposed and rather too deliberate they did not grow inevitably from the flow of the music. The whole Point of changes in dynamics is that they should sound natural and not artificial or forced. The sopranos and Altos were expect edly the main stay for one the tenors Small in numbers remain the weakest Lection. Mendelssohn s rather four Square setting of psalm 43 judge me o Given a rigorous somewhat punchy interpretation. The choir achieved Ood separation Between male and female parts but failed to convince us that the piece is of any real Merit. B in Schubert s Well known setting of psalm 23, the lord is my Shepherd the ladies of the chorus achieved some skilfully built climaxes and also a quite ovely lilt to their phrasing. In he male part song night by Schubert the chromatic so dings of the lower parts were in Civie. Some second tenors had rouble with their tuning while he tone of the top Tenor line was pinched. Interest in the music is chiefly melodic and on this Point it was largely successful. Then came three miniature masterpieces by English com doses. Hoist s famous Folk song setting i love my love is of course a veritable Gem. But it needed More vitality the Pace was a Little too slow and this caused the counter Melody phrase i love my love to be deprived of its Light dance like clears inter. There was however Good differentiation Between the male narrative and the female counterpoint. The diction was Guod but the whole thing needed1 More subtlety of Liras Tig sind a sureness of purpose it wins too tentative. C Stanford s Lovely setting of wary Coleridge s impressionistic verse the Blue Bird was Aliso largely successful. The singers captured the delicate mood of this piece Well. It was perhaps a Little on the stiff Side the Soprano refrain on the word Blue was too weighty and not nearly ethereal enough. And again harsh Vowel sounds made noticeable chinks in the Over All blend. Elgar s Majestic part song feasting i watch the second of five i splendid settings Anonymous greek poems was not As hippy in effect As one would have wished it to be. It lacked real Pace and flow. Words like flashing constellations did not have the Bril Lis Ince required. The important Tenor entry and anon i wreathe my hair was tepid and unsure. They did however approach the right mood in the charging of the words solemn and one Day perhaps they will give us All five of these magnificent part songs. Brahms cannot quite achieve the Light viennese gaiety that was Schubert s Birthright but in Bis Neue Liebes lieder he Man Ages to dance with unexpected Zeal and geniality none the less. With a mixture of vigorous often blatant Good spirits and warm hearted lyricism the chorus achieved some of their Best singing in this group of choral Waltzes. With typical teutonic thoroughness Brahms wrote about four pieces too Many for this group. Nevertheless the Good things far out balanced the indifferent. The e concert ended on a note of real optimism for the future of this Young and promising a Linoir.
