Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 4, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba
18 Winnipeg free press tuesday june 4, 1968 to make wings hit not Good enough for Hunter Twenty year National hockey league Veteran Bill Gadsby became coach of the Detroit red wings yesterday to the Surprise of no one. Detroit interests tried to maintain a speculative attitude toward the appointment of a new coach by indicating that Gordie Howe was in the running for the Job. But almost everyone knew that As Long As he can stand on a pair of skates and play a respectable game Howe won t take up coaching reigns. Being a close Friend of pair often go fishing is no doubt that Howe will give his Long time Friend All the help he can in his new appointment. Meantime we wonder what Edmonton s vociferous Bill Hunter thinks about the Gadsby take Over in Detroit. Hunter controls the Edmonton franchise in the Western Junior league. Toward the end of last season he apparently was t Happy with Gadsby As a coach and got rid of him. Now Bill who was t Good enough to handle Hunter s Junior club winds up in the National league where it takes a great Deal More skill to be a Success than it does in the Western Canada Junior circuit. Gadsby s Job in Detroit is not Point to be easy. The red wings failed to make the playoffs last season mainly due to the fact that they did not have enough strength behind the Elueline. Since the season ended they have done some thing to rectify this problem by obtaining Bobby Baun in a Trade with Oakland seals. They have also added defence Man Forward Ron Harris to their line up and Hope that Carl Brewer who can return to professional hockey next Decem Ber will join the club. Brewer however has not indicated that he will Don a red Wing Jersey and is talking about coaching in Finland which he May Well do. But if Brewer does decide to return to the pro ranks Detroit s defence problems May be Over for he is a great hockey player. Difficult to understand football fans All across Canada were shocked with the news out of Stockton calif., yesterday that Ted Watkins 27-year-old-football Star with the Hamilton Tiger cats had been killed in an attempted liquor store hold up. Until his younger brother Clifford who was wounded is Able to make an official one can Only wonder Why. What would impel this Man a father of four daughters to do such a foolish thing As a member of the Hamilton team Watkins was paid Well for his services undoubtedly earning a great Deal More Money than most canadians. At 27 he could expect to earn a top salary for at least three More years. What his future would have been after his football playing Days were Over is anybody s guess. Normally he might have been Able to set something up for himself. However last Winter Ted was most outspoken on television and in newspaper interview claiming Strong racial discrimination existed in Canada. This might have damaged his image but that is something Well never know now. Meantime we can Only say that it is tragic that his end should Corne in such a Way. Because of the position he held in sport Watkins could have aided the cause of his people. Now with his death he has Only injured it. Should take a lesson Tom Saunders of the free press editorial staff says Canadian Amateur hockey should take a lesson from soccer. He explains that for a number of years the europeans and South americans who Learned soccer from the British became More proficient than their teachers and taught them a lesson through new attacking and defensive methods they devised. Now he Points out the tide Lias turned with the master learning from the Pupil As witness England s Victory in the world cup two years ago and Manchester United s Triumph Over Een fica of Portugal in the europen cup final last week. It was the first time an English eleven Ever won that Competition although Scotland s celtic did so last year. Incidentally we saw some of the action in the european cup final on television and it certainly was an exciting and thrilling match. The crowd was in a constant uproar from Start to finish. The roof on the grandstand at Wembley just about came off when Manchester scored the first of its three overtime goals. The English Side was much the Best in this one and should have won it in regulation time. And we wonder what passed through Lew Hayman s mind when he Learned that an exhibition soccer game Between Glasgow celtic and a. C. Milan Drew people in Toronto. Brewer snowed with offers Oshawa ont.
