Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 20, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba 18 Winnipeg free press thursday june 20, 1968 parties stress wheat Issue Edmonton up despite increasing industrialization fed eral election campaigns on the Canadian Prairies always revolve around agriculture poli cies. It s no different in the campaigning for the june 25 Federal election. Prime minister Trudeau and conservative Leader Stanfield have talked about National Unity. Or Trudeau has dwelt heavily upon Urban problems. Or. Stanfield has hammered at social welfare. New democratic party Leader t. C. Douglas has emphasized the general state of the Economy and High living costs. But All have talked at length about wheat the real gut Issue in Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta. It is an Issue that can not be ignored a surplus of bushels won t go away. The personal magic of John Diefenbaker and the aggressive sales policy of his agriculture minister Alvin Hamilton have turned the Prairies into a conservative stronghold in the years since 1958. Even in the 1965 election when the liberals scored another minority win the conserva Tive grip on the Prairies was broken Only by the elections of one Liberal two social Credi tors and three new democrats. In an attempt to maintain the grip or. Stanfield stated an agriculture policy calling for introduction of a Short term mini mum Price for wheat tied to production costs. The Price would apply during the three year life of the new International wheat agreement. Or. Stan Field also says his party would renew the sales policies of or. Hamilton. The tories would also Institute a system of farm storage payments to Farmers to ensure that wheat deliveries would be made at the request of the Ca Nadian wheat Board. And a new quota plan for deliveries would be devised to ensure full delivery by efficient Small the Liberal policy Calls for a system of National marketing boards for agricultural products. It also specifies doubled Loans on farm stored wheat and promises minimum income for Grain Farmers with built in guarantees against declines in prices or marketing. The nip Calls for a two Price system for wheat with Forward pricing for each crop year so that prices and delivery quotas Are known to Farmers before the planting season. Also advocated by or. Doug Las is a floor Price of a Bushel. The present Price is s1.95. An imponderable on the. Prairies is or. Diefenbaker1 s effect. In Saskatchewan Many still frankly vote for him not for the individual candidates. The old chief is a candidate again himself in. Prince Albert and has confirmed his outside Campaign work to a few constituencies where the tory Candi dates Are old and faithful sup porters. There Are indications that Duff Roblin former Manitoba Premier May be in trouble in Winnipeg South Centre where Liberal e. B. Osier has come on strongly from his initial under dog role. Some voters have shown signs of blaming or. Roblin who i n t r o d u c e d Manitoba s first sales tax last year for High living costs including a substantial 1968 municipal tax boost. A Factor that help win nines Liberal candidates is the John Diefenbaker clocks Stop at 1958 planned sunday visit by or. Trudeau to open the red River exhibition. The prime minister will receive massive exposure because he will also ride in the exhibition Parade just two Days before the vote. Provincial parties in Mani Toba and Alberta have kept Well in the background through the Campaign although Alberta Premier e. C. Manning was due to speak in Medicine hat in sup port of social creditor Walter Strom brother of or. Man Ning s agriculture minister and one of Only three sacred Candi dates in the province. In Saskatchewan where poli tics is a Way of life provincial liberals and nip have both been Active. Nip Leader Wood Row Lloyd has had a Busy speaking schedule and the provincial Liberal attack has been led by attorney general d. V. Heald. Throughout the Prairies Many Liberal candidates Are running on the basis of the prime minis Ter s personality Many Campaign posters consist merely of the names of or. Trudeau and the local candidate with no mention of the party. Conservatives because so Many were members of the last parliament often have been running on their record but there have been attempts to sell or. Stanfield s personality. The nip has no trouble sell ing or Douglas but is finding that even in Saskatchewan where or. Douglas used to be Premier the Diefenbaker influence is still Strong. There were 4.8 Prairie seats in 1965, and 42 conservative wins. Redistribution has Cut the num Ber of seats to 45, and at the same time changed enough elec toral boundaries to make Many seats Uncertain. Adding to the uncertainty is the yet unanswered question can Trudeau mania be trans lated into votes and if so. How Many it ii 958 again by Derik Hodgson Russell Man. Staff for two hours wednesday John Diefenbaker reversed the Sand in the hourglass. He stopped All clocks Here at 1958. For that Brief Span time had not changed him his conservative party or his coun try. His Welcome was tumultuous. Three thousand people jammed the Russell Arena. They had come from throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan to hear John Diefenbaker. They came by bus car truck and Workbook. They carried cowbells hand lettered signs and obviously their heart in their hands. The Man they cheered was still their John. Or. Diefenbaker himself did t look act or talk like a deposed tory chieftain. It been 1958, but the Hugh sign behind the platform gave Way to the present. In bold letters almost Sacri Legious it read the More you think about it Stanfield is the from the Start it was obvious that the had thought about it and John Diefenbaker was still their Man. He charged the liberals with ineptitude in wheat sales failure to bolster the country s Economy and said the govern ment was using National Unity As a smokescreen to obscure other issues. Or. Diefenbaker said the prime minister had gone across the country kissing everybody but the he said or. Trudeau likes agriculture or floriculture he is always wearing a Rose but does t care too much about wheat swingers i can stand but Lead swingers he said or. Trudeau s con version to liberalism was apparently bigger and better than St. Paul s to christianity. Or. Diefenbaker warned if tru Deau goes in next week your taxes will go up shortly and i do not make false he agreed with the liberals when they say they sold wheat certainly. They took our conservative markets. Who was it who scoffed and scorned when we went to red the former conservative chieftain warned the farm popu lation that the Liberal party had the same bottle Content but just a new Label. He compared the prime min ister to a steering wheel Oil a car and said if one changed the steering wheel it did t mean a new car. If a Liberal govern ment goes Back in your prob lems As Farmers will be greatly he promised that a conserva Tive government would sell your he said Robert Stanfield believes in one nation and that or. Stanfield is not the Type of Man who says one thing and Means another. One Canada one nation he Trudeau borrowed the words but he did t borrow my computer training Centre administration offices and school located at 269 Kennedy at Portage suite 203 phone 9 . To 9 .
