Winnipeg free press thursday june 20, 1968 s 19 student questionnaire shows conservative attitude at u by Michele Veilleux the chairman of a student committee on professor course evaluation at the University of Manitoba is surprised at the conservative responses of Stu dents to a questionnaire. Karen Ginsberg said in an interview the average of replies to the questionnaire asking students their opinion on the academic value of their Cour ses showed on the whole a very conservative attitude. Most people liked their lec Tures thought their time was Well spent in class. Most would recommend the she said. Courses they the questionnaire was Distri buted in March in about 120 general arts classes attended by the students registered in arts and students from other degree programs taking one or two arts credits miss Ginsberg said. The 20-year-old student in third year honors political science who said she initially took on her committee chair Manship somewhat hesitantly has engineered the study past some student faculty and administration resistance. Much of the resistance Stem med from poor results from a similar study two years ago she said. That time the study had been mailed out and had received poor returns the results were not published. This time professors were asked to allow classroom time to fill out the questionnaire which allowed an " almost 100 per cent return miss Ginsberg said. She said some professors who had been on staff when the former study was attempted were hesitant to give up class time this year because they thought there was not enough but she and her committee of 1 12 students consulted with members of the sociology department who generally favor such evaluation studies she said and a former staff member of the University of Alberta who had been on the receiving end of a similar study they designed a questionnaire whose answers would supple ment the general calender which says what the courses Are supposed to be. We thought there was a Large discrepancy Between How the course was described and what happened in the the committee met with representatives of department Heads and decided the results of the Section evaluating individual professors would t be released to students but would be Raade available to departments concerned. The results of the course evaluation will be published in the first week of september and will be available to new and returning students said miss Ginsberg. We Hope they will use it to select the idea in t to steer students away from a course it s to encourage Reform of courses that a r e n t Satis none of the courses evaluated has been Given a terrible rating by students said miss Ginsberg and few people gave Nasty she and a male student have taken Over an office in the student Union building where hidden among stacks and boxes of forms and data sheets they will Analyse and draw up reports from the results which have been compiled by com Puter. Room 222 of the Umsu building is their summer Home we even have a stamp supplied by the student Union which is financing the project. It is encouraging to see people willing to question the said miss Ginsberg. The study May continue next year but miss Ginsberg hints it will have another chairman her efforts will be concentrated on her own grades. She plans to continue graduate work in political science after her Bachelor degree with Aims towards research.
