Another View by John Robertson i received a very touching letter from a Man who was heartbroken i Don t think that s too Strong a word to because his son had let several father s Days go by without calling or writing him. I know he reads your he said. And if you could just mention it i Sai and stared at the letter a Long time wondering How Many thousands of sons it could be properly addressed to on this Day and in this Era when the younger generation too often confuses individuality and in dependence with rejection of the family unit As if love were a geographical thing whose roots must be left to die when one moves. I know that Many of us Are quite sincere when Ive say that just because we Don t write to our parents regularly or visit them does t mean that we re not eternally aware of All they have done for us. But the fact that our love for them is still in our heart in t enough because As they sit Home Alona clinging to ebbing memories of what their children used to they Don t know except by physical reminder How we Are How we feel and if indeed we still care. A child at maturity goes out and makes a new life for himself and so it should be. But what of the parents must they Settle for a legacy of memories of torn faded pictures the parents cannot go out and make a new life. If you succeed in the world they want to know about it arid share your Pride. If you fail they want to still fulfil their role and share your suffering with you. Go to just about any funeral and you la often find at least one prodigal son or daughter summoned Home in haste to mourn crushed with the remorse of waiting until now when it was too late to do the things and say the things they have been carrying in their hearts for years. Go to any cemetery on Mother s or father s Day and you May find these same people returning along with their families to Pray and sadly to punish themselves too by repeating if i Only had none of us Ever loses a Parent without some degree of remorse Over what we forgot to do and say simply because none of us was capable of being the perfect child. Conversely innumerable parents have erred grossly at least in their children s eyes. But does that justify the Heartbreak of ostracism that a few forgiving words could cure for thousands now it s not yet too late if just to say hello. Welfare thai dirty word in the minds of count less Winni Eggers and even one or two aldermen has cropped up again because of the eight per cent increase in monthly payments. And i m getting a Little fed up with the abuse heaped on these unfortunates and most of them Are to be pitied just because cases of welfare abuse keep popping into the news. You be heard the comments both official and unofficial Why Given pm More Beer it s cheaper not to work Why should i pay taxes to support a Bunch of deadbeats i can t conceive How Alderman William Mcgarva can justify trading against the first welfare increase since 1966 just because a recipients Are collecting unjustly. What does this have to do with the thousands who Are forced to live in shame As Well As poverty the shame of being badgered by neighbors As Charity cases and the frustration of daily counting every Penny. If some Are collecting unfairly then should t Aid. Mcgarva direct his criticism against his own City employees who Are obviously incapable of determining who is needy and who is not the welfare increase puts the monthly Dole for each family up to around 8250 a month. Could your family live it up of a month Aid. Mcgarva s stand is making him a hero with the lower income working Man. But i can t for the life of me see what a working Man making not much More than welfare Doles out is getting so excited about. Would he really prefer to quit a steady Job and suffer the shame of living on welfare just because the take Home pay is roughly the same i think the lower income working Man has More Pride in himself than that. And besides the percentage of taxes this group pays which ends up in welfare pockets probably does t amount to More than a few cents a week. One other Good reason Why welfare should t be abolished is because ther. The lower income Man would have nobody to look Down on. And human nature being what it is we just have to have someone to look Down on so we can build ourselves up in our own eyes.
