Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 21, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba Coffee Bre electioneering is the name of the game and it gets More colourful every election although i m not certain it gets More informative. Gimmicks have their place in campaigns to acquaint the voters with the candidates and in getting the message across i just no one votes for a candidate purely on the strength of the novelties. A lady from Morden challenged Rne to publish her letter and than did t have the strength of her conviction to sign the letter. However i m Happy to publish the Gist of her message because i think it merits consideration. She tells me she was viewing the Billy Graham crusade in Portland Oregon when he said that Abraham Lincoln would have trouble winning an election today because he does t project. To affect 60 families Neepawa special Neepawa and District residents were told thursday that the town s major Industry would close in about 12 months. He conducted what was termed a mini representation of the Winnipeg concert band which he s headed for the past 10 years. Core Godri a member of the Royal Canadian horse artillery army is taking Over As conductor of the concert band. The Canadian Salt company in Montreal says in a press release that the Neepawa Plant which employs about 60 people and has a monthly payroll of would be closed in late 1969. The company is constructing a new million processing and packaging Plant for Salt at kalium sask., 25 Miles West of Regina on the trans Canada Highway. The new Plant will be served by two railways which will provide easy distribution for the product on the Prairies. There is a High Grade of Fine Salt sufficient for the foreseeable future said the release. When the new Plant goes into operation it is expected some members of the Neepawa Plant will be taken on staff. About 60 families Are involved. According the release the Low Grade of wheat brine available at Neepawa As Well As the obsolete production facilities have made the operation increasingly unprofitable. Studies Over the past few years have confirmed that continuing the Neepawa operation would be economically unfeasible said the release. Salt production in Neepawa was started in a Small Plant in 1932. In 1935 the Plant was sold to Canadian industries Ltd. The present Plant said to have Cost million when constructed went into production in 1941. In 1951 the company sold to the Canadian Salt company which operates plants at Windsor ojibway ont. Harry Smith of Nee Pawa called the loss of the town s major Industry a disastrous he said he telephoned Industry and Commerce minister Sidney Spivak and was assured the minister would give every assistance to the town to secure a replacement Industry Here.
