Others will recall it As the election when the kids flipped when squeals and kisses invaded a political world once ruled by William Lyon Macken Zie King. For Pierre Elliott Trudeau 48, the question is whether a virtual newcomer to the Politi Cal game can succeed where Lester b. Pearson four times failed and Lead the Liberal party to a majority Victory. For Robert l. Stanfield 54, it s a question of whether the image of sober responsibility he brought from the Nova Scotia premiership will enable the conservatives to counter the tru Deau excitement. And for t. C. Douglas at 63 fighting his 13th election Campaign and his fourth As democratic party Leader it is once again a question of whether a left Wing party can break through to the top rank of Cana Dian politics. On april 23, when or tru Deau announced dissolution of parliament and the calling of the election just three Days after he was sworn in As prime minister standings in the 265 seat commons were Liberal 128, conservative 94, nip 22, credit Ste 8, social credit 4, Independent 2, inde pendent conservative 1, vacant 6. After the last election nov. 8, 1965, the standings had been Liberal 131, conservatives 97, nip 21, credit Ste 9, social credit 5, Independent 1, inde pendent conservative 1. This time because of the full reshuffling o f constituency boundaries in the 1966 redistribution there will be one seat less. The Liberal conservative and democratic parties each has nominated 263 candidates. First elected to parliament in 1965 As a Liberal following a Brief flirtation with the democratic party he served As parliamentary Secretary to prime minister Pearson later As Justice minister before he became prime minister on april 20. Kobert Lorne. Stanfield was born into a wealthy and politically prominent family in Truro Nova Scotia on april 11, 1914. Educated at Dalhousie University the University of Brunswick and Harvard he entered politics in 1949 As a member of the Nova Scotia legislature. He became Leader of a Mori bund provincial progressive conservative party and led it to Power in 1956. Thomas Clement Douglas was born in fal Kirk Scotland on oct. 20, 1904. Emigrating to Canada with his parents in 1910 he was educated at Brandon College Mcmaster University and the University of Chicago. On his graduation in 1930, he entered the Baptist ministry a position he left when he was elected to the House of commons in 1935 for the Kcf party. In 1944, he resigned his Federal seat to seek election to the Saskatchewan legislature. Or. Douglas who is married with two daughters became Saskatchewan Premier in 1944 and remained there until he returned to Federal politics As Leader of the democratic party in 1961.
