Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 22, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press saturday june 22, 1968 19 Terence and Noreen o Hara the 1 twins of or. And mrs. Terry o Hara of 1219 Wolseley Avenue get a ride in a motor boar Friday at Mani sphere. Veterinarians show off by Gordon Arnold Manitoba s veterinarians Are showing off. And they be got quite a bit to show off at vet scope the display they set up for Man sphere 98 red River As soon As the visitor enters the Winnipeg Arena he notices a huge plastic Bubble with arms suspended from the ceiling. That is used to raise piglets in a sterile environment. Inside the display there Are a number of Mink in cages and visitors Are warned with a sign at the top of each yes we they come in a variety of shades you might say a Mink for All moods dark Sapphire pastel Violet and Marten to name a few. Or. Hugh Best the veterinarian in charge of Public relations for the display said considerable work is being done in Cross Breeding Mink to produce color mutations. One of the prob lems when the mutation in t genetically is that the same color in t obtained for the whole litter. Then there s Isabelle a five year old h o 1 s t e i n which in 305 Days produced pounds of milk and 750 pounds of butter. The veterinarians will be using Isabelle to show How they examine Large animals. A display table shows a number of Metal objects which have somehow or other found their Way into a cow s stomach As Well As the magnets used to remove them. When a cow eats Hay she flips everything Back and into her stomach and then brings the Hay Back to Chew later. By this time the hardware has fallen to the Bottom of her or. Best explained. The highlight of the show is the Small animal surgery performed by two veterinarians working in a glassed in operating room while a woman assistant gives a step by step account Over the loudspeakers of what the doctors Are doing. For the faint of heart or for those wanting a better View four closed circuit television sets Are mounted on the top of the operating room where a close up of the operation is shown in Black and White. Closed circuit television is also attached to a Micro scope to provide an enlarge ment of the different Bac Teria which the veterinarians study in a lab. Ordinarily they would t use the to screen but this provides a better View for the Public. A presentation from the University of Saskatchewan veterinary College provides with synchronized slides and tape recording a Light hearted View of the profession its history and the men who spend six years studying to be Able to provide you with the Best possible service for your pets or livestock. In by Pieter Vanbennekom Western Canada s first sidewalk drinking establish ment opened at Man sphere 98 Friday and judging from the Public reaction it was a smash hit and could be a trend setter for a further liberalization of Manitoba s drinking Laws. Young or old Mah or woman Manitoban stood in line to get into the German Beer gardens at the fair Friday especially the out door beverage room on the East Wall of the Arena. In previous years Winni Eggers could View the exhibits walk around the Midway and drink Only soft drinks. If they wanted to have a Cool Glass of Beer that could t be done. This year even the most sceptical among the authorities will have to admit that there is no direct connection Between outdoor drinking and vice. And if there s nothing wrong with drinking at Man sphere red River exhibition what s wrong with a sidewalk cafe on Portage Avenue in front of the Bay or Eaton s where shoppers could take a break and businessman could Stop by on the Way Home to relax with a Cool one watching the girls go the German Beer gardens have shattered the myth that drinking should be done inside where nobody else can watch. It has established the principle that a bar is for entertainment and for fun a place where nobody has to feel ashamed if he s seen inside. Both establishments at Man sphere the outdoor beverage room and the inside pub in the basement of the Arena serve Cana Dian Beer and wine at 50 cents a Glass. The glasses Are slightly larger than those used in. Most Normal beverage rooms the outdoor bar opens at 11 . Every Day has the summer Sun until about . Continues in the Shade and later in the darkness under floodlights until mid night. The indoor Garden opens at 4 . Except on Satur Day when the doors open at 1 . And closes at Midnight. Both will be closed sunday and election Day seating capacity is 200 outside and 200 inside. There is continuous entertainment by an accordion player with a varied Reper Toire of German drinking songs the rap Kapelle orchestra and the d drifters Rock n Roll band both Beer gardens have been gaily decorated at a Cost of and the waiters and waitresses Wear appropriate German cos Tumes. For Light snacks Reimer catering Ltd. Has spicy German sausages available at moderate prices. Clair Leatherdale is chairman of the Beer Gar Dens and Len Turaldo the manager. Some comments from patrons on the opening Day it s so different it s so Nice Here in the fresh air this open air business is groovy Man the Only thing we need now is a place to dance the atmosphere is so con genial. Next year they should have it in a different style mexican for example and then italian the next year the entertainment is a Welcome change from go go some of the More frugal patrons Only men said they liked the idea but the prices were Way out of line and however they All admitted that they expected paying a few cents More and that they d still rather have a Beer at Beer gardens than at a downtown beverage room. The Royal american car Ries its own Power plants with i to and generates enough electricity to Light a City of each ride has a Foreman who is an expert at setting it up on lots marked out ahead of time enabling the show to turn a vacant parking lot into a bustling City in Short hours. Presiding Over this port Able Empire is Carl Sedl Mayr jr., who says of it i could never Settle Down in one town All my life. I want to get out and go somewhere else. There is always a Challenge new towns new with the death of his father in 1965, or. Sedl Mayr inherited 60 years of show business tradition a tradition which has seen the show grow from a Small Start in 1921 to the Point it now boasts of a mile Long Midway. Frank m o r i s s e y the show s publicity Man said the whole show is appearing in Winnipeg but in some areas depending on the size of tile lot and local Laws some attractions particularly the gambling conces Sions will not be set up.
