Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 3, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press wednesday july 3, 1968 Omen s news Rainbow stage costumes achieve Thrifty elegance anyone attending the Rainbow stage production of carnival will notice the elegance of two White Satin costumes among the hubbub of color and materials. But few will know of the Art which took a sketch by designer Ted Korol and 98 cent a Yard Satin and hours of work to produce that flowing Cape the suit with upstanding Collar and a gown with completely boned bodice. The Art is known As cutting and the Cutter Maryka Gawron. She and four workers created 60 costumes from or. Korol s sketches for the show which opens wednesday. For miss Gawron designing for the theatre and the Ballet Are part time jobs providing extra excitement to her regular profession of manufacturer s designer. In her theatre profession she must practically be a designer herself she noted in an interview while watching the first stage exposure of the costumes she had created in six weeks including re adjust ments. The prime Factor in her mind concerning these costumes was the provision for movement. Mrs. Peter Musyk holds Trousseau Tea mrs. Peter Muzyk of Corne Street North Kildonan held a Trousseau Tea in Honor of Daugh Ter Petrette Maria who will marry Edward Dennis Dolyniuk saturday. None was available so miss Gawron s wardrobe department Cut six Inch Diamond shaped pieces and sewed them together for a leg and one Side of the suit. As the harem girls walked on miss Gawron pointed out that the bikinis quite fitted were velvet without the use of any Stretchy material. No Stretchy materials were used anywhere but with know ledge of fabrics construction and body movement she can make a one piece Doublet to turn a somersault in All costumes Are lined she said to give a Quality finish to what is often very inexpensive material. Miss Gawron Learned the Art of cutting for the stage in new York Belgium and at Stratford she describes it. Is a combination of costume tra Ihrig and fashion knowledge for it requires background in clothes and in historical periods not Only How clothes looked but How they were constructed. Cutting in the manufacturer s sense Means tracing a pattern. In theatre of any kind it also Means making the original pattern to suit the mood As Well As the specifications of the designer.
