Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 4, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba 10 Winnipeg free press thursday july 4, 1968 stun Gas ends Brawl London ont., City police and teen agers exchanged blows during a Street Brawl tuesday night on the City s main Street following a Street dance. Four youths were arrested. London ont. Up police said w e d n e s a y they were forced to use Mace a chemical stun Gas to break up an unruly crowd of about 300 teen agers at a Street dance tuesday night. About 30 officers broke up what was termed a near riot outside the Dundas Street a Mories. Several officers were hit by bottles. One was taken to Hospi Tal. An auxiliary policeman was beaten about the face and head two police cruisers were dam aged and windows in two build Ings were smashed. Sgt. Russell Culp used Mace a chemical Gas which is sup posed to Render victims helpless within 30 seconds to Spray three had backed him into a during the disturbance. It made their eyes water. Police chief Finlay Carroll said Mace a combination of tear Gas and chemical solvents was issued to 12 non commissioned officers in March and one of the reasons the Gas was not effective tuesday could have been that sgt.
