Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 16, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Winnipeg free press tuesday july 16, 1968 15 completely misty eyed George w. Schilling the Dean of racing officials on the continent recently retired from his Many official engage ments retaining Only his direction of weekend racing at Caliente for his life Long Friend Johnny Alessio however he still remembers Many of his Canadian friends one of whom is Bruce Boreham of Assiniboia Downs. The judge As he is known by All ranks in racing still Calls Bruce his oldest Canadian Friend As he was on the local car platform Back in the fall of 1925 when Schilling arrived to assume the duties of Steward on the Prairie thoroughbred circuit. In a letter to Bruce a few Days ago the judge tells of the special Day arranged in his Honor at Golden Gate Fields. After he had decorated the Winner his friends gathered in the Winner s Circle and presented him with a Gold scroll which read to George w. Schilling. In grateful recognition of the Many years of service and countless contributions to racing in general and at tanforan and Golden Gate Fields in particular. Presented with deepest respect and affection june 8th, 1968." the judge adds that with applause from More than in attendance i was completely misty eyed and was All choked up for a few the scroll is now in my trophy room which also contains Many remembrances from Canada including the honorary citizenship from Winnipeg the water color Pic Ture of myself Given me by James Speers on my 25th year of service to Western Canada and the Lovely Silver tray presented to me by Assiniboia Downs the evening i went Back to Winnipeg in 1963 to present the r. James Speers memorial trophy. The Speers trophy is in my opinion the most beaut i Ful trophy i Ever saw and perpetuates the memory of one of the greatest gentlemen it was Ever my privilege to know. I was fortunate to be associated with him for 32 years and we never had a Cross word. Canadian racing is better for the life of the late James judge Schilling ran up against some bad health some months ago but is now out and around As usual but has wisely restricted his activities. He spends a lot of time in his swimming Pool at Home but is still under doctor s orders. However i Pride myself on being an understanding patient and like a Good jockey i obey my Trainer s orders. I am now Down from an overweight of 215 pounds to 160 pounds by sticking to my instructions i am feeling Good again almost As Good As the morning you met me at the station Back in 1925." race fans Here will be delighted to hear this Good news from the judge and will wish him Many Long years of Good health in a retirement he has so Well deserved. His Home address is 3037-28th Street san Diego Cal. 92104. The latter is Given in Case a few of Schilling s old friends May wish to drop him a line. Tribute to Blake while on the subject of racing recently we commented in this column that the horse clique which was running at Assiniboia Downs under the colors of John Sifton was probably the Best bred thoroughbred Ever to appear Here the column came to the attention of or. Sifton at Rochester minn., where he is undergoing medical care. Sifton writes that when clique made his first Start Here this season he had been away from the races for 18 months the second time in his career that he had been Laid up for More than a year. Since he began racing clique has endured two major surgeries on his Knees operations from which most race horses Seldom recover sufficiently to return to the track. However owner Sifton feels that much of the credit for the Success clique has enjoyed Here belongs to Trainer Bert Blake who certainly did an outstanding Job of bringing the horse Back to the races. After an exceedingly slow Start racing fans have been turning out in goodly numbers at Assiniboia Downs the last couple of weeks and consequently wagering has improved. Indications Are that betting will show a fair increase Over a year ago. Still the racing picture in Manitoba is As Good As it should be particularly when compared with Edmonton and Calgary. Part of the answer is of course the fact that in the Early season race fans wait until some degree of form is established. This of course will always be the problem Here with so Many new horses appearing on the scene at the Start of each season. In Calgary and Edmonton there is not the great annual turnover. Program at the West end track was out standing and the calibre of racing As Good As one could expect. The third race in particular was a heart stopper when both Zelda Mae and Shu Swap Sheik overhauled the leading merry Monarch a few Yards from the wire. It is this kind of racing that brings the fans Back. Introduces you to Ted Barrett sales consultant see Ted for a great Deal on his demonstrator or a better used car.
