Plants do Best when placed outdoors for the summer months where they Benefit from full exposure to Sunshine and have plenty of fresh air. They Are kept in their pots which Are plunged in the ground to the rim. During hottest they need free watering but with cooler Shorter Days the Supply is reduced gradually until a state of almost Complete dryness is reached. A dry foot system and a Cool temperature Are natural and desirable conditions for Winter. However where the plants Are kept in a warm room they must have water occasionally. The period of time spent in the open during summer has a deep effect on amount and Quality of the flowering. In. This Region plants come indoors at the end of september. The Best soil is of a porous nature two to three parts of Garden Loam and one part of a mixture of coarse Sand ground old bricks and weathered mor tar rubble. A relatively Small amount of humus is used for Ordinary types. The Christmas Cactus likes a moderate amount of humus. The Bottom of the pot is Given a layer of pebbles or broken crocks and then the coarser part of the soil mixture. Some Small lumps of peas encourage growth of fibrous roots. Potting is not a pleasant task because of spines. Wear leather gloves. It is important that the soil be pounded firmly into the pots. A Long potting stick makes for efficiency.
