Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 20, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba R 10 Winnipeg free press Fra Trdat july 20, Manitoba Parks offer at Home vacation Opportunity by Cliff Shnier now that summer is Here Many Manitoban Are won Dering what to do and where to go on their vacations. If you Aren t too keen on something foreign or exotic there Are numerous Vaca Tion spots Here in Manitoba. The provincial tourist Branch describes them exhaustively i n reams of colourful folders and Pampa for you might look into loading the family and baggage into the car and spending a Holiday at one of the nine provincial Parks All equipped with camping facilities for tent ing and trailers. White Shell Park 90 Miles East of Winnipeg is billed As Manitoba s largest and most highly developed provincial Park. It covers More than Square Miles and 200 lakes. Apart from a number of see Greece the Way bar ii did by Krystal Pool Cape so Union Greece special tons lord Byron chiselled his name Here in Marble. To you who have never studies English Litera Ture this statement won t mean a thing but to the few who have spent Long hours Reading interpreting and enjoying his poetry let s All raise our glasses to lord Byron. If nothing else it proves he was human. Extraordinary in poetry there is no doubt but in living he was As Normal As the rest of us. Who has t wanted to scratch their name in Cement paint it in big Black letters on a Brick Wall or carve initials in an old Oak tree remember when All those Kilroy was Here signs were so popu Lar. Well this was lord Byron s Kilroy. He came to Greece in the Early 19th Century and like most lovers of Beauty found the country irresistible. The exact Date he travelled to Cape so Union is unknown. However the Temple Poseidon where his name is so painstakingly scratched into Marble was built about 300 by. For All you gals up on greek mythology y o u 11 know that Poseidon was the greek s god of the sea and according to Homer had a Palace built of Gold in the deepest Depths of the Aegean. The greeks used to Pray to Poseidon before they sailed on a Long voyage. This Temple built in his Honor is High on the tip of the Cape and was the first sight returning sailors saw when they rounded the Bend for Home. When they saw the Temple they knew Poseidon had blessed their trip. Perhaps lord Byron was preparing for a voyage Back to England and like the ancient greeks came to ask Poseidon for his Blessing or maybe he had just arrived and like me came to Admire the Temple s Beauty. It is exquisite. Go at Sunset. Then its Marble pillars Glisten like a million diamonds and the Ocean rhythm magically pounding on the rocks below sighs and crashes until the Sun is lost to Poseidon s watery Depths. We drove Here from Athens. I came with a greek girl named Angela Kosmopoulos who not Only Speaks excellent English but could almost pass for an american. Her hair is Brown and her clothes look enough like mine to have been purchased in los Angeles. The drive to Cape so Union is marvelous. We passed through villages with car casses of wild boar and goats. Angela told me housewives select the por Tion they can afford and the Butcher chops it off. Stan Ding along the Black hooded widows sold crackers of Yogurt and beaten fishermen displayed their Day s catch. Our Driver bought an octopus and a Gunny sack full of greens for one . Dollar. We stopped for lunch at the astir Palace a new hotel about 30 minutes out Side Athens. It s one of the loveliest in All of Greece. The hotel is surrounded by the sea and water skiers were out gliding like swans across the skin diving Clear water. If i would have brought my swimsuit we would have gone no further but then i would have missed seeing lord Byron s name carved in Marble and after All As every poetry Lover should know that alone was Worth the trip to Greece. Motels mostly in the Falcon Lake West Hawk area the Park provides several Camp grounds totalling tent and trailer Sites for those wanting to rough most of these grounds have sanitary and cooking facilities a Beach and water and electrical hookups for each site. So it s not All that rough. Sixty Miles North of Winnipeg is Manitoba s oldest vacation and recreation area grand Beach which became a provincial Park six years ago. Over the past few years work has been continued to expand and improve the area and. Last year a Campground with a capacity of 400 tents or trailers was trave opened. About one fourth of the Sites Are serviced with electricity so it might be a Little further towards roughing until the ase Sippi provincial Park near the Saskatchewan Border opens grand Beach has the distinction of being the Small est one in Manitoba with an area of Only nine Square Miles. Winni Eggers who Aren t eager for a Long Highway trek might find Bird s Hill provincial Park just North East of the City to be convenient. Described As a Multi purpose Park in a govern ment pamphlet Birds Hill has most of the amenities a vacationing family would want and what it does t yet have is being put in shortly. Turtle Mountain Provin Cial Park in southwestern Manitoba buts against the International Boundary and contains the Canadian half of the International peace Garden although neither of its two campgrounds pro vide electricity they have most of .tlie7 other facilities which distinguish a devel oped campsite from raw cooking and Sani tary facilities arid drinking water. The Turtle Mountain Campground at Max Lake also has a Beach other provincial Parks All with varying degrees of i 3 s _ i q., .1 i a i Altril i i. Camping accommodations included u c k Mountain Cleart Yater and a r a s s River located in the More northerly parts of Western Manitoba. With opening of Spruce Woods and ase Sippi provincial Parks this sum Mer the Park building pro Gram begun in 1964 to commemorate the Centen Nials of Canada and Mani Toba will v be completed. The list could go on. It s a 180-m i 1 e drive Northwest of Winnipeg to reach Clear Lake which could be negotiated in about hours. So with the entire family you could make it there in six or seven. T does t matter j we have 9 offices around the Globe to Handl your travel Merino travel service 377 Henderson Hwy. Winnipeg 15 travel with a purpose three Miles of the finest Sandy Beach on Lake Winnipeg is the main attraction of grand Beach provincial Park. Non swimmers can Wade out hundreds of feet without going Over their Heads. The Park also has some 400 trailer and tenting Sites about 100 of them served by electricity. Iesta by Krystal Pool Rome special tons Nero fiddled while Home burned but the smart tourist today will take a siesta. During the summer months especially August the siesta becomes a necessity rather than a quaint custom. I flew to Rome on a italia s nonstop flight out of new York which Inci dentally puts you in an italian mood the minute you climb aboard. No pizza or Spaghetti just great anti pasto Vermicelli lobster and five different kinds of wine. I expected to find cooler weather Here but no such Luck. The reason i m telling you this is not to keep you away Only to inform you to bring your coolest clothes. My favorite Way of seeing Rome on a warm summer Day is to get up with the Sun. Because of the time change i Wake up at Dawn anyway so i figure i might As Well take advantage of the Early morning coolness. Some of you girls who spend the night dancing at the Tampa club or Capriccio s won t even need to go to bed siesta time. Then the Sun is blazing overhead and it is too hot to do anything but rest. Walk through the City. This is much More fun than bouncing Over the cobble stones in a taxi. Besides around every Corner is a Fountain a statue or an old ruin and if you re in a cab you la miss half of them. Naturally at Dawn the streets Are deserted except for Street cleaners and a few other Earl Birds so you can enjoy Rome without jostling crowds and noisy traffic. Around 7 .-. The Trattoria Small standup snack shops begin to open. By this time you la be famished and will probably want a nine course break fast but in Italy As in most of Europe breakfast is a hard Roll and a cup Coffee. The big meal is Pranzo lunch and it is not unusual to spend three hours consuming it. One of my favorite restaurants for lunch or dinner is the Corsetti in Trastevere Piazza s. Cosi Mato 28. You enter a room that looks like a Small mama and papa grocery store but it s actually the Kitchen. Hanging from the ceiling Are Bunches of onions bet to chilis and turnips. On counters Are boxes of potatoes tomatoes Beans and eggplant. Over in one Section is a table loaded with Lamb cuts roasted baby pigs and every variety of fish imaginable. The room is sparkling clean. On italian visit from Here you can go up or Down. The downstairs dining room is typically italian with red Check ered tablecloths jugs of wine and plump italian chef tossing pizza dough. To go to the upstairs dining room you follow a flight of twisting stairs to a room modelled after the Interior of an old Galleon. The planked Walls Are perfectly curved the leaded windows Are scaled to size and the huge menu is on Parchment treasure map style. After a few drinks it s not hard to imagine you re actually at sea. I might As Well Tell you girls in and Vance this is one of the most difficult places in the world in which to count calories. Here is one time i say forget the diet and enjoy yourself. At night go to the via Veneto. I know you be read about it a thousand times and wish someone would write about something new but the truth is All the happenings happen on the Veneto and. If you want to swing this is the Best place in Rome to do it. Besides the outdoor cafes that line the entire Street there Are countless Little discotheques nightclubs and tiny bars facing both sides of the Veneto. It s the spot to see and be seen.
