Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 23, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Winnipeg free press tuesday july 23, 1968 by Don Blanchard the bums9 responded the fortunes of football Are astounding. Abused confused and considerably less then amused their offence seemingly sterile their defence bursting apart at the seams the pre season patsies of the Cal did a remarkable about face last night and struck a blow for the less fortunate. The Blue bombers started to push Back shedding the shackles of inferiority ave sch had bound them and leaving the Earth for the Meek to inherit., for guidance they turned to the Only Man capable of leading them out of the wilderness of mediocrity Dave Raimey still the Best halfback in the land. But not. Before the fortunes of the Winnipeg football club had dipped to a critically dangerous Low in the team s proud history. The night was humid the crowd was surly and the Ottawa were lighting up the scoreboard like a Christmas tree. The bombers were using the shortest to get nowhere and somebody stood up and growled play football a the Hometown team fitted the description perfectly however sadly. But these same bums and the word is used advisedly were to win the respect of doubters and one of the most awesome football machines country the rough riders before it was time to retire. Everybody of course already knew about Dave Raimey his incredible balance that somehow allows him to run one leg while the other appears firmly bound to a Manly bosom of a would be defender. But this was the new responsible Dave Raimey the Leader and the offensive Captain a title bestowed upon him by coach Joe Zaleski during Camp at Gimli. Obviously it will be a decision the head coach should never find reason to regret. While it would be ridiculous to ask Raimey to score five touchdowns a game All season last night he provided the Type of leadership the bombers Haven t enjoyed since Herb Gray wore 53. Gray led by action not word. This is the kind of inspiration Raimey Hopes to provide. I Don t care if they his team mates like me off the Field As Long As they respect me on Raimey said quietly in a dressing room atmosphere that smacked of Newborn Confidence and Hope. These Are grown men. They have a Job to do and they get paid for it. They owe it to the club and they owe it to the fans. I Don t believe in that Rah Rah stuff. I Only Hope i can Lead them by action and Dave was almost Humble As he accepted congratulations for his great performance. Of pass catching and running last night As he brought the bombers storming to life and helped instill Confidence in Young John Schneider the quarterback. Clair Raimey fan but he was far from satisfied with the Overall result. We have some Good Talent but we have to Start win Raimey cautioned. Schneider is going to be a Good one he can really throw the Ball. He puts it right where i like it up Dave grinned gesturing with his hands Over his shoulder. In the Ottawa room Frank Clair. A Graceful Winner could t Heap enough Praise on Raimey and the manner in which the bombers came to life. Sometimes that s All it takes to get a club moving. Sure we relaxed after getting that Quick Lead but you can t take anything away from them. They kept coming and we went with our Best in the second half. I wanted to win this one but they had me the scholarly professor admitted. And that Raimey he s unbelievable. On that final touchdown run i thought he was Down three times but he kept Bobbing out of a ring of ladders. His balance is Clair enthused. Back in the cubicle of the losing coach Zaleski admitted it was a moral Victory and managed a Brave smile for the first time in three weeks. It s a Start. We were Able to move the Ball tonight although we still have a lot of work to do on our running Zaleski who Seldom singles out individuals said quite frankly that it was Raimey who had provided the inspiration. He s the Guy who got us going. Maybe it s a sign he s going to have a great Joe added hopefully. He also directed some Praise at Schneider who improves every Outing. He took a pretty Good beating in the first half but he wanted to stay in there so i let him go All the Way. He showed me tonight that he s going to be a Fine thinker. We discussed things on the sidelines during the game and he made some intelligent suggestions then went out there and made them but it was the veterans who took the initiative which is As it should be. Defensively bombers received some excellent work from the likes of Bill Whisler the defensive Captain and another Leader Phil Minnick who led the please see pigskin Parade Page 18 modern truck Stop with All facilities and Large volume sales 24 hour service excellent location and Good potential returns. The latter deflected the Ball but at right it drops into Tucker s warring grasp for a touchdown. Not this time Winnipeg s dashing halfback Dave Raimey 27 ran into the heart of the Ottawa rough rider line and was stopped Short of the Goa line on this occasion. However Raimey Dax led the easterners with a five touchdown performance at the stadium photos by Dave Johnson monday night. Raimey hero in a losing game by Don Blanchard the Blue bombers plagued by an alarming Lack of Success silenced a snicker or two Mon Day gently remind ing the Western world that they still have Dave Raimey. They did t win mind you but it will be with renewed respect they Are treated by West Ern adversaries when the can Adian football league opens its 1968 schedule next week. Raimey the country s Premier halfback scored five touch Downs in vain As the bombers dropped their fourth straight exhibition game 43-35, to Ottawa rough riders at Winnipeg stadium. The knife As Raimey is known apologized to Rookie quarterback John Schneider for not catching another touchdown pass and berated himself for not making it into the Ottawa end zone on two cracks from the enemy one. The big winners were fans almost double the attend Ance at Winnipeg s first Home game a week earlier. They were treated to one of the most Gaudy offensive displays Ever presented for Public consumption. When for example did a Winnipeg team last score 28 Points in one pm sorter at the same time however a bomber earn has Seldom looked so futile As it did in the first 11 minutes last night while the Ottawa were piling up a 21-0 Lead with ridiculous ease. Overcome by compassion and anxious to see what some of his rookies could do rough rider coach Frank Clair substituted freely in the scoreless second Quarter. But he had to Call in the militia in the third Quarter when Raimey built a Large Bon fire under an offence which had been using the term under false pretences. Even then the finely tuned Eastern machine was unable to halt the momentum built up by the wingless 0-4 Blue bombers who had suddenly discovered offensive Genius. Raimey in one of the most Brilliant displays of his professional career scored on John Schneider passes from 73, 24 and 25 Yards. Twice he exploited the weak Side of the Ottawa Blue bombers eyeing Coleman Ottawa rough Rit Len and Winnipeg Blue bombers obviously like to do business with each other. Bomber coach Joe Zaleski spent several hours in Confer ence with rider general manager red o Quinn sunday night at the International inn where the riders were bedded Down. They weren t talking about the weather. The meeting gave birth to rumours that there s still another Trade in the wind Between the Eastern and Western rivals. They completed a five player Swap during the off season and have exchanged players on several previous occasions. The bombers could be bickering for Veteran running Back Lovdal Coleman who according to Eastern reports was placed on waivers last weekend then withdrawn when Montreal Clouet Tes showed interest. The riders Are loaded with Backfield material and Cole Man could become expendable. Bombers of course could use a Back with Power who can pick up the key Short yardage. In their search for same the club brought in newcomer Herb Covington monday afternoon. Covington a 6 a 217 Pound running Back was Cut by new Orleans saints of the nil. Coach Zaleski has some contacts in the area who recommended Covington. The Rookie from Memphis state arrived in the City at 4 ., took a medical had a Quick supper and immediately Drew a uniform. He toiled on the bombers special of Kickoff teams last night and indicated he s a solid Blocker. Hell receive a five Day try out. Coleman meanwhile was used Only sparingly Fay the riders last night but nevertheless displayed some of his old form when he did have occasion to carry the pigskin.
