Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 24, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba Wednesday y s mailbag like everyone else s did t arrive but i did find a delightfully Short subject to occupy my time mini skirts and their Rise or fall. My authority in my study was Laurel Nelson of the Bay who assures me and All other Portage Avenue strolling males that despite fashion trends in London Paris and new York the mini will be around for some time to come in Winnipeg. It May even be of the Rise this summer but not to the same Heights As some seen recently by miss Nelson in new York and Montreal where they be been As High As a foot above the knee very Odd Type in London for some years the trend is just noticeable in the other two cities. Laurel says two to four inches above the knee is comfortable and attractive for younger girls and will Likely stay there locally although some briefer styles have also made their appearance Here this year. And she advises local males not to worry about Maxi skirts the ankle length disguises now being worn occasionally in London. Says Laurel they re just fun things for very occasional Wear the mini is still the thing for the thank you Laurel for the reassurance. And of course the absence of a daily mailbag gives me an Opportunity to answer some of the letters received pre postal strike. Like the one from mrs. Pauline Uskoski o Beausejour who s discovered a difference in her daughter s pints and quarts compared with those mrs. Uskoski was taught at school. The problem arose when mrs Uskoski s daughter Cheryl a Grade 3 student corrected her when she described one pint As consisting of two cups not so says daughter 2y2 cups equals one pint. And sure enough this is the measurement table in the Little girl s math Book. When did it change Well our free press Home economist Norah Cherry had the answer for me it s really just the same As always. The difference is in the american or wine measurement which is two cups equals one pint. The English measurement used in Canada has always been 2y2 cups equals one pint. The Basic difference lies in the american quart measurement of 32 ounces compared to the English or Canadian quart of 40 ounces. Cast changes it won t be Yvette who precedes Jack Jones at the Centennial concert Hall Friday night after All Vicki Knight will be the local girl featured in the opening numbers. While Leon and Harry vacationed from the bandstand at Rae and Jerry s the past couple of weeks Fine piano sounds were supplied by Jack Parkin. Jack has played a lot of piano around Winnipeg but mainly As a member of a group. Alone he turns out to be familiar with All the piano classics appreciated by the quiet listener.
