Ulm a spaceman moves to repair the Antenna system of the spaceship discovery in order that Contact can be maintained with Earth almost half a billion Miles away. Iff a scene from the realistic science fiction movie "2001 a space now playing at the Garrick theatre Cinema 1. A review by Michael Kostelnik new space Odyssey film an entertaining trip in 2001 a space Odyssey the film which opened thursday at the Garrick Cinema one science fiction movies have been elevated at one stroke from a second rate form of entertainment to an Art form with unlimited possibilities. There have already been a few interesting science fiction films seeded among the Many b films in the Field but they were slightly before their time. It is Only in the last decade which brought the mushrooming scientific explosion the expanding activities of Man in space that science fiction has forcefully entered the Fibre of our reality the corridors of our imaginations. The time was indeed Ripe for someone with brains the prophetic ability of the True artist to make a genuinely relevant science fiction film a film which could make a pretty Good guess about where our technology space exploration will take us. The right Man for the right moment turns out to be Stanley Kubrick who directed 2001 co authored the screenplay with Arthur c. Clarke a major figure in the science fiction Field. The main premise of Kubrick s film is that Given the seemingly boundless size of the universe it is inevitable that there Are extraterrestrial forms of life which Man will surely encounter As he probes space. What shape the forms will take Kubrick in t about to specify. Instead the film opens with a scene on Earth during the Dawn of with ape men i the verge of turning completely human. A Mono lithic obviously machine made Metal slab is discovered by the ape men appears to in fluence them into using their hands to grip objects ran act which Marks the first step in turning the ape men into human beings. The film then leaps to 2000 . Only 32 years from the Man has already colonized the Moon Dis covered a similar slab buried beneath the Moon s surface. While under observation the slab emits a piercing radio signal directed at Jupiter. Eighteen months later a manned space ship Heads for Jupiter where no Man has been before in an attempt to solve the Riddle of the slab. Kubrick s film becomes a cosmic mystery Story with a plot that stretches to the infinite secrecy clamped on talks continued both government Union sources said the Issue work ing conditions is very Complex. So far the mediation talks had dealt with generalities not one specific item had been set tied. On tuesday the Union Council presented a massive set of proposals based on a conciliation Board report into Post office work rules. The work rules Issue is a major Point in the dispute. Cost men Are complaining about a Long list of working standards ranging from ventilation of Post office quarters to the condition of mailbag. The Union Council is demand ing a 75-cent hourly increase on a 14-month contract with an added 20 cents for lower paid categories. The under legislation governing the first collective bargaining for Federal Pil Blic servants would be Retro Active to sept. 1 of last year. Two Days before the National strike began july 18 the govern ment offered a 15-cent, hourly increase in two stages. It was angrily rejected by the unions. This is the first postal walkout since 1965 when workers struck for a week in Quebec Ontario British Columbia. This time about postal clerks letter carriers in All provinces Are off the Job. Aneth was narrowly avoided by mediation in 1966. Toj pre strike rate or postal clerks was an hour for letter carriers reaches of space the agonizing limits of our 1968 imaginations. What is behind the slabs which seem to be luring Man on a voyage from primitive a Edom to the far reaches of the Galaxy in route to Jupiter Kubrick introduces a subplot the attempted takeover of the mis Sion by the spaceship s devilishly intelligent almost human computer Hal 9000. The Battle Between Hal the ship s commander Keir Dullea makes for a voyage of chilling drama suspense. We receive a Shock of recognition warning As Dullea with All the human guile courage at his command Battles for his life against the Superior intelligence of the malevolent machine. But the film s prime state ment comes when Dullea As the Only survivor of the trouble filled voyage encounters near Jupiter the Superior extraterrestrial life form which produced the slabs. Kubrick ends the film by asserting that our encounter with a Superior form of consciousness could change Man to As great a degree As the previous change from ape to Man. All this is very difficult material to convey on film Kubrick has his troubles with it. He is aided by the film s truly czech reds reported divided continued but reliable sources also said Dubcek again made it Plain to Russia that any breach of Sov a s stationing russian troops in his country was totally unacceptable. One communist source said a snap vote on the crucial policy Issue of opposing soviet de mands went against the progressive Wing of the party presidium by six votes to five. A Central committee spokes Man said later he did not be Lieve reports Dubcek was outvoted. But he added he could not be sure As he left before the end of the meeting. The unconfirmed reports of a serious reversal for Dubcek could throw the entire timetable for proposed Prague Moscow talks out of order. Top communist officials Here expect the russians to repeat an offer of military tween three five troops Divi protect the czechoslovak Western flank with West Germany if this was rejected without any political Compromise some form of occupation could not be excluded one prominent party specialist predicted. The report that Dubcek was outvoted followed a party presidium communique that appeared to indicate a major Concession to Russia Over the political command of the czechoslovak army. The czechoslovak party presidium ordered it Gen. Vaclav Prchlik Back to army service abolished the political department of the party which he headed. It controlled the army Security police judiciary. Prchlik july 15 told a news conference there should be a re vision of the Warsaw pact to give the other members an equal voice with the soviets. The soviet leadership was also angered because he openly criticized the delay in the withdrawal of russian troops from Czechoslovakia after the War saw pact manoeuvres in june. The associated press said unconfirmed reports in Prague said Moscow demanded Prchlik s removal in a secret note charging that Czechoslovakia had become a weak link in the Warsaw pact Chain. Prchlik played a key role in the ouster of old guard party chief Antonin Novotny last Jan uary by tipping off Dubcek to an old guard plot to use the army on Novotny a behalf. Prchlik was subsequently made the army s chief political officer helped the reformists consolidate their hold on the reins. Revolutionary techniques which with a few exceptions lend an air of utterly convincing reality to the various types of space vehicles shown. The hollow soundlessly lonely feeling of being in space is also captured in a fascinating manner. Kubrick heightens the absorbing realism by often reminding us that the film is Only 32 years ahead of the present. Familiar Brand names Are employed a Hilton space hotel a pan american Moon shuttle ser the civilians in the film do not dress or act very differently from us indeed they Are us or at least our sons however the first half of the Over two hour movie has too Many machines too Little mystery too much of Kubrick crowing Over the film s tech Nical achievements too Little plot development. And the film s final scene of the meeting Between Dullea the Superior life form suffers from some unnecessary con fusion vagueness. Admittedly Hie encounter is fiendishly difficult to communicate but Kubrick seems to ask too much of his audience. He puts too much stress on the Protech Nical Beauty of the encounter not enough care into telling the audience what is actually occurring. The result i fear is an intentionally mystical ending made unintentionally mystifying by Kubrick s Lack of Clear exposition. But the faults in a space Odyssey Are Worth enduring for the film s awesome total effect Kubrick has fashioned a movie Milestone that is sure to spawn a whole series of High High Quality science fiction films. But i would guess it s going to be a Long time before a science fiction movie is made that surpasses this one. An unforgettable film which is a must for just about every Type of moviegoer. Military presence favored continued k he held separate talks Here thursday morning with defence minister Leo Cadieux de Fence production minister Don Jamieson before going to Mont real.
