Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 29, 1968, Winnipeg, Manitoba Coffee r by Bill Trebilcox movies Abe better than Ever it s just that some Are less better than others. No better example is needed than 2001 a space Odyssey and the Odd couple both currently playing in our City. Admitting to a built in Bias against science fic Tion comparing the two flicks proves to me that while computers May eventually do everything but repro Duce themselves they will never replace humans in the acting Field. Possibly i should qualify this because All the act ing Hori Orr in 2001 do go to Hal the computer voiced by Douglas rain but then Hal really does t have any Competition from the human members of the cast. The Only other candidates for oscars in the Way out production might be the men in Monkey suits who play the part of apes in the Early history of our planet and then they can t compete with the antics of the simians in the Monkey House at the Assiniboine Park zoo. The "70 my super Pari vision me trocolor stereo phonic sound did come up with the parts i enjoyed the scenery in the Early portions of the movie plus shots of outer space. Then there s always the planetarium at the Centennial Centre. I admit it i m no science fiction fan. But i am a poker people fan and the Long play poker game in the Odd couple is a thing of anyone who gets together regularly with his poker pals will recognize the dialogue immediately for its authentic ring and for its genuine comedy the same Type that often takes place unconsciously in real poker games. Walter Matthan Jack Lemmon and their card playing pals were hilarious to me. People can still out act computers and that will still be True 33 years from now in 2001. More Pps pre postal strike mail Brenda me Naughton who attended Frontier collegiate in Cran Berry Portage last term is still looking for her watch. She was with the track team that competed in a meet at the Winnipeg stadium on june 1. While there her watch Bracelet came apart and she lost her watch which in t very valuable As far As Money goes but has a sentimental value. If anyone found a Silver coloured Timex with Matching Bracelet they can write to Brenda Pps Post postal strike at grand rapids Manitoba. No Sandra Moreau unfortunately you were the Only one of Many who reported Ripe tomatoes earlier this month. And a note from president Bev Lloyd of the Manitoba Amateur swimming association about Pic trials and National championships at the pan am Pool aug. 13 to 17 they need financial help and if you wish to help Contact their treasurer w. Tab Bernor 247 Montgomery Avenue. I m fascinated by the ads that Tell me i can have a one bottle bar until that its Lone constituent will be a Jug of White Rye. Now i Don t doubt the Quality of the product but it seems almost criminal to me to replace that dirty old Brown stuff with a Clear liquor no matter How Good. But then i m a creature of habit. And speaking of habit Hugh Findlay of time Magazine s Toronto office tells me a recent Survey by the publication on liquor habits shows that sales of Vodka in Canada have increased by 300 per cent in the past seven years without my help i might add. And in provincial drinking habits British Columbia with just nine per cent of Canada s population has a per capita alcohol consumption of 45 per cent higher than the rest of the country. And along with word that Manitoba at Torney general Sterling Lyon s department is giving serious consideration to doubling the debt limit that can be paid off in easy instalments under the orderly payment of debt act comes this Story from Ben Holden. I be Learned a lot about the new neighbors to the Little woman told her husband. They have no car no television and no piano. Later the party which was headed by Astrid Pacher summer chairman of the Giesec committee toured the port s giant Grain elevator and the British vessel the Silks Worth first to reach Churchill this summer. But the visitors also saw the tumbledown Homes of Churchill the dilapidated shanty town on the Bleak wind swept Flats and the fresh but seemingly futile attempt to improve conditions at the new Village nearby where windows arid door panels have been v knocked out As fast As new Homes have gone up. It was a dreary picture compared to Ultra modern Thompson the next Stop Only 10 years old. How can there be such a difference Between the two asked 25-year-old greek student John Sarris on the flight Back to Winni Peg. Churchill has far less development than one worm expect in a place that has a big research Centre and a port with such thriving business in the or. Sarris said he was surprised that there was no decent residential area in the town and that research Centre scientists and technicians had been centralized around the base and not housed in new developments nearer the town. Maybe they Don t want to be near the eskimos and indians maybe the natives did t want the newcomers near them. But what has happened now is that there Are two completely separate communities. While life to Churchill seemed very depressing Thompson with its United proud Community was a perfect example of what i believe that Canada s future lies in further exploration of her Northern Natur Al or. Sarris said. Students from six nations visit North Thompson was clean and orderly and while know that Churchill can never be a Thompson surely some thing could be done. It seems to be a Community that has been forgotten and left to. A there was a similar reaction from 22-year-old Ber Nard Croston of Manches Ter England. 6, i always thought of Canada As a Rich prosperous land. I never thought there were such pockets of poverty in the North and such i terrible slums Lor the Indi ans. It s probably unfair to compare two towns which were developed in two Dif Ferent eras but you get the feeling that something could be done about Churchill. Apparently there is no proper sewage or running water. Surely the government should do some thing about that. But the problem is something More than that. Thompson was a town pushing Forward As a unit. Churchill seemed to be a lot of different commune at the Churchill research Centre the students saw preparations for wednes Day s launching of a Black Brant b rocket which will carry five payloads for atmospheric research. Following a tour of Churchill s Eskimo museum the students were guests at a reception at the research Centre s club aur Ora.
