March is so successful that the staged and the real become a cinematic whole. March s techniques and his color and wide screen Cam Era turn paper lion into an irresistible Lively projection of the brutality color precision and Balletic gracefulness of professional football at its Best. I have never seen a live or televised football game which gave me quite the sense of being in the game that paper lion gave me and i m sure you will experience the same feel ing. But thanks to a pedestrian directorial chore by Edward Dmytryk a simple minded screenplay and the utterly unbelievable Story line Shalako gives the two super stars very Little Chance to Shine. Instead the film s fitful Energy is expended on scenes of the kind of stomach turning violence that alas seems to be mandatory for westerns these Days.
