The United states today Marks the fifth anniversary of his assassination in Dallas Texas. A it Cvieta Lar Michael new paper lion movie roaring Good fun paper lion the football film which opened thursday at the Odeon theatre is the Sleeper of the year. I based on a Book George Plimpton wrote about i his real life experiences with the Detroit Lions professional foot Ball team a couple of years Back paper lion is an Effort Lessly comic and effortlessly enjoyable film. The basis for both Book and the originated with Plimpton s joining the Detroit team As a player in order to write a Magazine article about football from the inside. On the surface this seems a rather crass and Over familiar idea but amusing complications occur when the Detroit players j laugh at Plimpton s inept at tempts to play calibre quarterback. His Manly Pride assailed Plimpton loses his reporter s Cool and determines to show the Lions that he is just i As Tough and athletic As they Are by playing quarterback for the team in a real game. The Lions management mindful of Plimpton s substantial writing ability decides to give Plimpton his Chance at leading the team in real com Bat instead of the practice sessions to which he had been confined previously. The final 45 minutes of the film deals with the game in which Plimpton meets his pigskin Waterloo and they Are 45 minutes of some of the most colourful Active outrageously comical and oddly heart rending screen entertain ment you Are Likely to see this j year. Much of the credit for the brilliantly realized game scenes goes to director Alex March. March has an amazing feel for the rhythms of both film and football. He uses All the modern movie and television techniques including marvellously timed Quick cutting to blend the Plimpton game scenes with a real game Between the Lions and the St. Louis cardinals. March is so successful that the staged and the real become a cinematic whole. March s techniques and his color and wide screen Cam Era turn paper lion into an irresistible Lively projection of the brutality color precision and Balletic gracefulness of professional football at its Best. I have never seen a live or televised football game which gave me quite the sense of being in the game that paper lion gave me and i m sure you will experience the same feel ing. The film partakes charmingly of the Best of two worlds of humor. Screenwriter Lawrence roman plays off the crude limited but often amusing locker room humor of football players against the super sophisticated new York wit of Plimpton and his friends. The result is very fresh tangy comedy indeed. Director March aids the film s enjoyable atmosphere by doing an excellent Job of directing the Detroit Lions who play them selves in the film and thus add an invaluable air of authentic Ity. Or perhaps As always suspected football players have a lot of Ham under the beef. Head coach Joe Schmidt defensive tackle Alex Karras and linebacker Mike Lucci Are j the Best of this cheerful and surprisingly competent support j ing cast. I screen newcomer Alan Alda is just right As Plimpton a tender new York Ostrich on a Field of carnivorous Detroit Lions. Alda captures Plimpton s courage intelligence and the funny Side of his Boyish eccentric personality. You Don t have to enjoy football to enjoy paper lion for the Fine film it is. But if you like football Touhl love paper lion. Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot walk hand in hand in Shalako and so do violence and Dull incompetence. Shalako the film which opened thursday at the Garrick Cinema 2, is a dismal attempt to turn a Western novel by the rather undistinguished Louis l amour into a starring vehicle for Connery and Bardot the Irish stud and the French Queen. But thanks to a pedestrian directorial chore by Edward Dmytryk a simple minded screenplay and the utterly unbelievable Story line Shalako gives the two super stars very Little Chance to Shine. Instead the film s fitful Energy is expended on scenes of the kind of stomach turning violence that alas seems to be mandatory for westerns these Days. Included is a really vile scene in which an Indian kills the villainess Honor Blackman by forcing a string of pearls j Down her Throat until she i chokes to death. Miss Bardot s performances is i quite horrible in itself. Her face is made up until it seems like a 1 death mask of her former self. Her eyes Are As lifeless As stones her English is execrable and her acting worse. It s hard to believe that a real person is the source of the Bardot image on the Garrick screen. She seems More like an aging statue of a Young girl we knew in i some Distant and dimly remembered past. Connery for his part just does a James Bond West. The supporting cast offers no acting highlights either although villain Stephen Boyd and miss Blackman Are adequate. Shalako is really Only for movie fans who want lots of violence and very Little of anything else in their westerns. In addition the present Power of the lords to delay legislation for up to 13 months would be Cut to six months. The purpose Here is to prevent the lords from Stym Ying Laws passed by a labor government in the year before an election. The r a n k a n d of i 1 e revolt against the scheme by members of All parties despite its endorsement by their leaders was numerically so Large and their objections so Broad How Ever that its future is clouded. The Welcome this proposal has As one tory said during the heated two Day parliamentary debate is probably the coldest in the history of Christian critics heaped scorn on the intended House of lackeys so derided because of the obvious patronage opportunities it would give a prime minister. Some saw a sinister conspiracy by leaders of All parties whose purpose was a take Over of the legislature by the executive Branch. Against the plan were politicians who have never before and probably never again will make common cause from radicals who insist on nothing Short of abolition of the lords to traditional conservatives who want no change at All.
