Here is one of a series. By Bob Culbert they re playing the game of political follow the Leader in the fort Rouge constituency whore three women arc providing one of the most intriguing contests in the june 25 election. The new democrats started the Ball rolling Early the night before Premier Weir s election Call in fact when they nominated an outspoken Winnipeg school trustee As their candidate. Mrs. Una Decter represents Ward one on the school Board. So the tories decided to go one j better. I they followed up with an going for a third female Candi Date mrs. Jane Heffelfinger. All three candidates Are Well known for their Community and social work hut they Are All newcomers to the provincial political scene. And with the tory held fort Rouge seat altered drastically by changes in older Homes and apartment blocks with a Large concentration of Young and elderly voters in the Middle and lower income brackets. Both the Liberal and nip Camps say it is dissatisfaction with the government among the Young and the elderly which could swing things their Way on election Clay. Mrs. Heffelfinger wife of the president of the National Grain company in Winnipeg and one of the men approached to run Lor the leadership of the Liberal party recently is making her first election bid at any level. But although she has held no municipal Post she Points to a Long record of Community and social work As evidence of her interest in the area. Motivations to Liberal nomination says anger and the electoral boundaries its anyone s guess who will be elected. A Large chunk of the old constituency has gone into forming the new seat of Crescent Wood where finance minister Gurney Evans the fort Houge incumbent in the last legislature is running this time. The new seat is also made up of about one third of the old constituency of Osborne and one third of the old constituency of Winnipeg Centre. Both were held in the last legislature by leading tories municipal affairs minister 0 b i e Baizley and Veteran la James Cowan but the areas which have been moved into the fort Rouge Riding May not necessarily be conservative strongholds. Redistribution has made the seat one of Sharp contrasts. In its Eastern sector it Skirls along the South Bank of the taking in residential Homes and High Rise apartment blocks in the Wellington cres cent area. But she feels that the "10 Days and 10 nights left before the polling is quite sufficient for her to keep the seat in tory hands. The people in this area know we have had Good government and they have been Well represented. I m confident they will continue to support the Weir Admi she said.
