Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 19, 1969, Winnipeg, Manitoba Homes in All districts 12oo Pembina hwy., Winnipeg 19, Man. 24 hour service 452-2132 Winnipeg free press Beaver moving storage local Canada . By Carrier soc per week thursday june 19, 1969 2nd class mail registration number 0236 overseas packing shipping phone 786-60s1 agents Allied Van lines another View by John Robertson do you even take time out during the course of a even a Day when everything is coming up onions and take Stock of just what a Lucky stiff you Are you May be impoverished you May be ailing you May have just blown your Job or your marriage or Bolh. But if you Are capable of Reading these words you Are luckier than those who have no sight. If you Pace the floor at night fretting about overdue Bills it May be an idea to Stop and thank god that you Are not in a wheelchair. If you even have the mental capacity to sit with your head in your hands and curse the fates which have made life an exercise in futility for you and your family get your Chin up j because you could be in a mental Home through no fault of your own incapable of feeling sorrow Joy or any human emotion. Yes most of us Are quite Lucky whether we believe in Luck or not. We were All born with a Talent for something even if it is Only a Talent for taking from life every Day without Ever bothering to give anything of ourselves in return. For some of us like myself the living is easy. We take a god Given flair for putting words on paper in some semblance of order and we parlay it into a comfortable Niche in society. We did t create this ability or work very hard to improve it or Stop to wonder what we d have Ever done without it. We just sit on our Stool each Day and milk it for All it s Worth. But now and then something happens which triggers an eyeball to eyeball confrontation with our conscience. It happened to me several months ago when an old Friend Eddie Cass led me through the association for mentally retarded workshop in the West end of Winnipeg where i saw people who were different from you and i Only in the respect that their god Given Talent was below some statistical Norm rendering them incapable of doing the things you and i accomplish with ease with god Given ease. And i remember going away from that place not feeling pity for these people but feeling shame for myself because they at least were functioning to the Best of their ability if it was just stapling folding and assembling Little gadgets while i was traipsing through life utilizing j Only that degree of Effort and mental capacity which suited my selfish interests. I made a vow to change my ways but of course that Only lasted for a couple of Days. But i made another Promise a Promise that i will now ask you to help me keep. I promised that if i was Ever in a position to do something for these people i would drop everything and do it. Now Here s the pitch. The Manitoba division of the car recently bought a summer Camp the old Dugard place near Beausejour. Then they bought an old Church and with great difficulty moved it from Winnipeg to the Camp site. There Are about a dozen Cabins on the site but there is j much work to be done costing tens of thousands of dollars j and that s where you and i come in. Here s How we do it. Thanks to four enterprising teen agers from w. C. Mitchell collegiate in Altona a 20-mile Canoe athon has been organized for june 28, starting at the irrigation ditch Bridge North of St. Adolphe and ending at the Winnipeg Canoe club. It is open to anyone willing to attempt to Row or paddle up to 20 Miles and nearly 150 Craft have already been entered. No motors Are allowed. And the payoff works the same As the March for millions you sub scribe for so much per mile. Now if you Are like me you probably can t swim Well enough to risk voyage ring on anything but a rubber raft at the Lake. But that won t Stop you from participating by putting your Money where your paddle could have been. This presents another problem. You probably Don t know anyone paddling in the event so How do you get your bet Down that s easy. You just entrust it to me through this column. This is the last Appeal i will Ever make to you simply because the string runs out for John Robertson at this stand on june 30. And i d like to make it the Best of All the Little projects we be tackled because it would be a Way of saying goodbye just Between us sentimental slobs which i would carry in my heart Long after you be forgotten i Ever existed. I know ill hear from All the regulars but i d like to extend this to include the big businessmen the people who will find the living easy this summer and who could but for the Grace of god be inhabitants of this Camp for the retarded. I Don t want you to do this for John Robertson or Eddie Cass or for anyone but yourself. I just want you to Stop count your blessings admit How Lucky you Are and ask yourself if you can t spare a Little to buy some fresh air and Comfort for a segment of our society whose courage and i dedication toward the task of just living and extracting some measure of happiness out of this world goes far beyond and i will Ever accomplish. Send me your pledge the Money part comes along witfr5, your return address and i la put it on the sunburned nose of some paddler for it s a Nickel a mile or a mile. The association for mentally retarded office will let you know who you re backing and after the race they la Tell you How much it Cost you. And the happiness you will have bought will be beyond measure.
