Overseas packing shipping phone 786-6081 agents Allied Van lines another bet All you want on 20-mile Canoe paddle View by John Robertson a Man named charming Pollock once described a critic As a legless Man who teaches running. And that in a nutshell is a pretty Apt description of one John Robertson sometime political pundit who got As far As the dressing room but never quite made it into the Arena. Although i have displayed a rather marked disrespect for politicians in general in this column and have never hesitated to put the slam on things they say and do on the hustings and in the legislature i have made it a Rule never to question their honesty integrity and courage. But there have been limes when i be questioned my own simply because for All the verbal tantrums i be thrown on behalf of such issues As South Indian Lake medicare Aid to victims of crime and even motorcycle helmets my righteous Fervour always stopped Short of going All the Way and letting my name stand on the ballot As a True endorsement of what i believe in. But All critics All reporters All members of the news j Media do not share my timidity. And this is Why i cannot i let this election Campaign go by without tossing a bouquet in the direction of Jay newsman Jim Farrell who is running As an Independent in Sturgeon Creek Riding. I lest anyone get the idea that this is a vote for Jim Farrell pitch let me assure you it is nothing of the sort. If i thought he had an even outside Chance of winning the seat i would t even be writing this. There Are five candidates in the Sturgeon Creek Riding and any political pollster will readily predict that Farrell will finish dead last. But he is a Winner in my Book because i doubt if there is a candidate in the entire province who went into this Campaign with More single minded less Money. This brings the logical question what makes Jim Farrell run the answer in three words South Indian Lake. Farrell was one of the Many newsmen who sat through the South Indian Lake verbal gymnastics both inside and outside the legislature and reported each utterance with the care and attention it deserved. It loomed to him and Many others like him. As the major Issue in the forthcoming provincial election and he asserted himself ready willing and a private do every thing in his Power to prevent the government from going ahead with the South Indian Lake flooding and causing irreparable havoc on our Northern resources. He volunteered to work for any political party willing to make it their main Campaign Plank. But he was told bluntly that you can t sell the North or conservation to Southern voters. The whole Point of South Indian Lake controversy was lost As soon As the election was he told me. And 1 could see the opposition parties going Back to old election planks while the present government simply buried its head in the Sand and said nothing at As a last resort Farrell decided that the South Indian Lake Issue was going to be the major Plank of one party even if it had to be a one Man party the Jim Farrell party with one candidate Jim Farrell running in Stur Geon Creek. If the government was raising Sturgeon Creek by 35 feet i Don t imagine i d have much trouble convincing the voters of the importance of this said Farrell. But someone has to Farrell s Campaign Kitty consisted of two Anonymous donations one of s200 and the other s50. He can t afford newspaper ads radio or to spots because he s Al ready spent his Campaign funds plus out of his own Bank account. And this fact alone should silence the sceptics who feel that Jim Farrell is running for laughs. The Crux of his Campaign is the task Force report on the Hydro diversion prepared by m. C. Mckay of the the departure of Colum nist John Robertson from the free press staff this weekend has provoked varied reactions from read ers of another View ranging from dismay to crass indifference All the Way to open throated shouts of Good but his Farewell Campaign for funds on behalf of a 20 mile scheduled for saturday has already brought in a flurry of pledges ranging from five cents to a Dollar a mile. It is sponsored by the Cana Dian association for the mentally retarded. The Money will go toward the renovating of a summer Camp for the mentally retarded near and the Campaign is still tens of thousands of dollars Short of its object j. A lure than 150 Padett. Because time is Short Ami readers May not have time to Send in their pledges to the free press by Friday they Are urged to write or phone the Canadian association for mentally retarded at 825 Sherbrook Street. Or. Robertson was so conscience stricken in this his last charitable Campaign on behalf of another View that in a moment of rare generosity he himself Pledgee is a mile. Getting serous for the first time since he joined the free press 17 months ago or. Robertson said we should thank our Lucky stars that we. Or members of our families were not born with Imp cd 111 its that would make us eligible to use the facilities of this Camp. These people in their own Way Are putting much More of themselves into life and getting More out of it than we will Ever dream. A pledge of any amount whether it s from a com Pany a gang in some office. Or just some generous individual would help give these Fine people a facility that will brighten their lives beyond the strength of Many will be spent on the red River 5-his week and to help raise funds for the Canadian association for the men tally retarded s summer Camp near Beausejour Man. And this 15-Man paddling Crew from the Winnipeg Canoe club will be just one of 150 groups taking part in the 20-mile Canoe trip from St. Adolphe Man., to the club at 47 Dunkirk drive in St. Vital.
