Northwest purchased the base from the airline and has been negotiating with air Canada and the machinists Union to arrive at agreements that would Aid air Canada employees and insure the smooth transition of the base from the Crown owned line to private Industry. Major John j. H. Connors executive director of the Hospi Tal said at a press conference tuesday the Tower is one of three alternatives being Consi dered by the. Hospital in its attempts to bring its capacity up to about 700. All alternatives involve the demolition and replacement of the old Centre Section of the Hospital. Misericordia now has a rated capacity of 418 Beds and 53 bassinets. Major Connors said he does not expect plans to be ready for submission to the Manitoba Hospital commission until 1972. No approval for the program has been obtained from the commission yet he said. The second alternative for expansion is the addition of five floors to the Hospital s Cornish Wing before demolition of the Centre Section. The third alternative is demolition and re building of the Centre Section but major con nors said that plan involves drastic curtailment of the hos Pital s services for about three years. The executive director seem to favor the Tower proposal. He suggested that it could be linked to the present Hospital Complex by tunnels and Over the Street enclosed Bridges. Major Connors also announced that construction would Likely Start this Winter on a new emergency and out patient d e p a r t m e n t at the Southwest Corner of the present Hospital. As Well he said the Manitoba Hospital commission has approved enlargement of the Hospital s f o u r a e d intensive care unit to 16 Beds. Misericordia is the third larg est general Hospital in Mani Toba the report says. In providing care last year for the Hospital served meals almost the number served at one of Manitoba s largest convention hotels. In addition the Hospital provides training for nurses residents interns physiotherapists dietitians and Many others in the Field of Medicine. Misericordia s employed personnel amounts to people. Another 600 Are involved in different ways with the Hospi Tal s operation. In 1968, the objectives of the Hospital were re evaluated by a committee of members of Les sours de Misericord and laymen of other faiths. _ one of the most significant aspects of the recommendations which resulted from an investigation by consultants of the Hospital commission provide for a new act of incorporation and for a Board of directors of Sisters and laymen the report says. The Hospital thus became a corporation separate and apart from the founding corporation of Les sours de Misericord under the name of Misericordia general Hospital in May 22, 1968. But it is owned and operated by the Sisters. Members elected to the first Board of directors include Lay men representing different faiths. Mayor Ruta did not say he would take such action prior to the next Council meeting but hinted that if he disapproves of future news coverage be would not hesitate to proceed with such a measure. Fireball going up soon construction is expected to begin within two weeks on a fireball for the City of East Kildonan. The fireball will be built despite the fact that in the autumn ratepayers Defeated a Money bylaw which would have provided for the construction of a new police and fire station. Under the municipal act a Council May proceed with a capital expenditure provided it is financed entirely from re serve funds and that it is completed within the current year. The new fireball will be at Kimberley Avenue and Golspie Street about a Block East of the present combined police and fire station on Watt Street North of Munroe Avenue. The Low bid tendered by w. W. Construction co. Ltd., of North Kildonan was officially approved monday at an East Kildonan Council meeting. A spokesman for the construction company said tuesday in a Telephone interview he expects to begin work in about a week or two weeks at the latest.
