July 24, 1w9 a review by Benam string quartet uplifting 4.1. A the fifth of the summer school concerts of Brandon University was held tuesday evening in the Evans theatre. It was a recital by the Iowa string quartet. This is a quartet of faculty members of the University of Iowa and its members Are Allen Ohmes and John Ferrel violins William Preucil Viola and Charles Wendt cello. The program consisted of the 3rd quartet by Bartok the e Flat quartet of Mozart k.421b, my the string quartet by Javel. In All these works the Owa players showed a Well disciplined ensemble. Each player is Well equipped technically and they have a Fine understanding of the Basic character of each work played. It is not too often that we hear such a Fine program As the Bartok with its wonderfully Complex tonality and at times biting rhythm. It is a most compact work in one continuous movement but with fairly defined sections. It is lyrical and Barbaric by turns and the dexterous Way in which Bartok uses All the technical devices for strings beggars description. It was f in Al y played with Complete under standing and its difficulties were overcome with that deceptive ease Only achieved by much rehearsal. Following the density of bar Tok s texture it was a revela Tion to hear the unison opening of the Mozart quartet. This is one of those quartets dedicated to Haydn who to quote the composer s own words first taught me How to write a string the performance had in the first move ment great vitality but one Felt that a bit More classical repose would improve. However the dialogue in the second subject Between Viola and cello was extremely Beautiful. The andante con Moto is the sort of music which seems to evoke cosmic thoughts. It was richly sonorous. In the minuet we had a few moments where the first violin needed to have greater Pride of place As in Many Haydn quartets and around bar five was in danger of being overpowered by the other three players. However the Trio was beautifully suave with a Silky tone that compelled attention. The last movement was perhaps the least satisfying because of a somewhat stilted rhythm however the Rondo return with those Clear and resonant Fig ures was quite captivating. The quartet by Ravel is a masterpiece. It has a classical Unity unsurpassed by any work of its period. The opening was supremely Beautiful. Again one Felt that the first violin was just a trifle under balance in some of the phrases where it should have prominence. This was not the fault of or. Ohmes but rather a matter for the other three to adjust to. It had that gallic sensibility so much a part of this music. The second movement showed a wide tonal Range and its Trio was extreme y Well played. Those difficult octave double stops in the first violin were finely negotiated. Phe pensive slow movement showed each player1, singly and together plumbing emotional Depths while in the agitated dept. Of defence eyes housing area in flin flon last movement we had a wonderful evocation of shadowy drama free and flexible Well ing up and ebbing like the tide finally the players returned to play the adagio from a quartet by Samuel Barber. This work has been heard often in the adaptation for string Orch estra and it was therefore a unique privilege to hear its original form. It is a Fine piece of music and after its intense Climax those double stopped chords were most moving. Here was a pleasant reminder to us All. That beside miraculous technology and courage America has produced some works of Art which though unheralded Are nevertheless of a High order and will stand the test of time. Aftei1 All the drama and excitement of last weekend it was spiritually uplifting to hear this Fine music. The members of the quartet each played a Stradivarius instrument. It is pleasant to think that modern technology has not produced a More perfect sounding instrument after 250 years. Flin flon Man.
