Winnipeg free press thursday August 7, 1969 15 windfalls Are rare despite Art Boom by Carol Kennedy London up so you dream of a killing in the Art Market discovering a Rembrandt in the attic per haps or picking up a Grubby Oil painting for s10 in some country junk shop and having rotheby s pronounce it a Long lost Rubens forget it. Such windfalls do happen but As the authors of a new Book called the Art dealers say they form Only a drop in the Ocean of the worldwide Art Market now As Gilt edged and organized a business As Oil or Blue Chip shares. Authors John Russell Taylor and Brian Brooke say that even in the present Art Boom when records seem to be smashed every Oiler week in everything from a choirs to Vintage automobiles fortunes Are far less often and less easily made by the private collector than the Public Ima Gines. Many of the world s biggest collectors could not afford to sell their masterpieces be cause various taxes would suck up the profit. And even a painting by a Gilt edged impressionist if sold within five years will usually Tumble from the Price paid for Only because auction patrons tend to assume there May be something wrong with a Pic Ture that turns up too often on the Block. Taylor film critic on the times and Brooke a to Edi Tor concede in their Book published by Hodder and Stoughton that huge gains have been made Over the last 30 years most notably in the works of the impressionists which began their spectacular Rise in 1952 and took off into stratospheric prices in the 1960s. Sale records of Van Gogh Gauguin and Cezanne in the period 1930 to 1960 show values appreciating by a Stag Gering 4.833 per cent. But the authors Point out that buyers in 1930 were taking a real Chance with then unfashionable painters by 1960 the new buyers were backing a sure thing so the Odds of prof it now Are drastically reduced. Art As an investment the Book shows is a comparatively recent phenomenon. It would not have occurred to a Renaissance Patron or Victo Rian industrialist to calculate the future profit of the works they commissioned or bought As family heirlooms. But with american million Aires pushing up prices in the 1900s As the great Westward migration of european Art treasures began it became difficult for owners to ignore the financial potential of their ancestral portraits and land scapes. Joseph Duveen the famous British based Art dealer is credited with almost single hand edly creating that West Ward flow in which America equipped itself with an Artis tic a Man who dealt in grand gestures he used to tip deck stewards on the great Atlantic liners to put his Steamer chair next to that of some promising millionaire Prospect. He arranged the Sale of Gainsborough s Blue boy in 1921 to h. E. Huntington when the . Magnate travelled next to Duveen in the gains Borough suite of the Aquila a graced with a reproduction of the painting. Duveen s activities High lighted by the s620.000 Sale of the Blue was even a revue song written about it such concern that eventually Britain imposed Export controls on works of Art though not until 1946. Most european countries now have fairly Stric controls especially France but the British government tries to be reasonable realizing that Art treasures contribute Large chunks of much needed foreign currency to the coun try s Bank account. European Art dealers Are increasingly faced with the problem of How to meet de Mand from the dwindling sup ply of major works of Art in circulation. The London firm of a news still a family concern after 150 years with All five directors related by blood or marriage to the founder has existed mainly on the Princi ple of Selling pictures to one generation and buying them Back from the but this pattern now is rare. It has become a matter of urgent importance to the Art Market to flush the last few forgotten masterpieces out of whatever unlikely Cov erts they May be lurking say Taylor and Brooke. There is however an apparently inexhaustible Supply of lesser kind which form the bulk of the Saleroom b i n e s swings of fashion can produce a flood of Long neglected of painting on display Here soon came Warden Ronald Wilfong looks Over the damage after a Deer leaped through the Windshield of this Auto near Harrisonburg Virginia. The Driver of the car Richard Billings and his wife were treated for cuts and released from Hospital. For the first time the National gallery of Canada is i sending one of its major paintings on a coast to coast j tour to give canadians an Opportunity to see it. As the old sing so the Young twitter by Jacob Jor Daens was bought by the gallery in March at an auction at Southey s in London from the collection of the Earl of Wemyss and March of East Lothian Scotland. A family and drinking scene it is one of Jordaens Best celebrating Good living. Jacob Jordaens was the last great exponent of flemish baroque. Travelling with the painting is Guy Viau Deputy director of the National gallery. In a recent interview he talked about the Jordaens. This tour is part of the new policy with the National Gal Lery. The painting is crated in a Container which maintains the conditions of the original place of exhibition. It must not be opened until 24 hours after it has arrived at a gallery. This gibes it time to adapt to the new conditions. Damage can result from extreme changes of temperature. Or. Viau has been a Journa list and foreign correspondent. He has been a feature commen Tator on French television for International events. From 1948 to 1962, he was an Art critic and teacher. At the time of the interview or. White Seal takes the first step in taking on the big National Beers we re now in cans get us wrong. The naticna1 Beers Are very s just that we figure there s a place for a local Beer. Now there a no reason for you White Seal it s your Beer paintings from country House attics around Britain. Usually each generation discovers something which has been despised for about 50 years. But the collector who Hopes to pick up unfashionable work cheaply May be in for a Shock May not find any on the Market. Someone somewhere is hoarding them in the confident expectation that with the Art Market As it is things can Only get what then can the Small investor do if he has Good judgment and a big slice of Luck he May make an unexpected prof it out of paintings accumulated for love As a Man named William Alwyn did in 1962. He made up to per cent profit on pre Raphae the paintings he had collected Over the previous 15 years for sums Between and but basically the budget minded investor has two choices he can buy minor works by minor masters such As prints and lithographs but this is a Field in which some prices have been puffed so High in recent for Chagall Taylor and Brooke suggest it May soon level off. Or he can take the Riskiest course of All and concentrate on new unknown artists where there is no clue where the future whims of fashion will blow. The Best advice remains buy what you like without too much thought of profit. The authors conclude there is nothing for it but to pay your Money take your Choice and Hope for the sexy Book revealed As hoax continued woman who is not known to the authors.
