18 Winnipeg free press wednesday september a 1969 special course qualifies Montreal s homemakers room 0 ulsted Toronto up part of Scarborough Centenary Hospi Tal s new approach to paediatric care includes allowing parents to stay overnight with their Chil Dren if they wish. After All a child is the parents most prize says Anne Sokol Centenary s paediatric unit supervisor. If they Pic parents know we re not hostile and not hiding any by Carol Pascoe Montreal up families calling the family serv ice association when they re quire a temporary replace ment for Mother Are encountering a new Breed of Home maker these Days. As in the past she is usually a woman whose own family is grown and who has spent most of her life keeping House. But now the chances Are Good that she May also have a diploma in homemaking certifying she has completed a 600-hour course in family skills. Mrs. Fleurette Gagnon supervisor of homemaker serv ice at la society de service social Aux families Dis cussed the course initiated last october in an interview. Four months Long it was offered Only in French last year but mrs. Gagnon s English speaking counterpart is await eyes examined Contact lenses fitted optometrist m. M. Solomon open daily . To 6 . Opt at dept., lower level pole Park Del 988-4621 Eaton s Polo Park ing permission from the que Bec government to implement the same program for eng Lish speaking homemakers this fall. An outstanding feature of the course sponsored by can Ada manpower in conjunction with the Montreal Catholic school commission is that a woman with dependents is paid to attend. She receives s37 weekly for herself for her first dependent plus for each additional dependent to a maximum of weekly for the duration of classes. Others not eligible for the allowance paid by the Federal government take the course at no Cost. Homemakers May be called in to care for sick or elderly persons to take charge of children in a household where the Mother is physically or mentally ill or to guide Young wives whose upbringing did not provide a sound example in How to run a Home. Their working hours Are adjusted to suit the husband s he is off work he is expected to take Over from the homemaker. Usually a Case is terminated within six weeks. Mrs. Gagnon has a staff of 56 with diplomas. They receive a week to Start. So far 60 women have completed the homemakers began last october and 30 More in March. Some had been working with family agencies for More than 10 years but apparently Felt the program still had something extra to offer. Following instruction b y lawyers doctors economists and psychiatrists the Poten tial homemakers delve into such topics As Anatomy pre Natal to geriatric psychology marriage Laws and Legal aspects of divorce separation adoption women s and minors rights. They study alcoholism sociology pregnancy Elemen tary nursing nutrition sew ing Basic Interior decorating and family Short All aspects of daily life. Economists advise the women on Home management. Once on a Case homemakers usually do the shopping and Are instructed to spend the same amount As a Mother Dis poses of in a week. After All they feel there is bound to be conflict if a husband discovers his wife requires twice As much Cash As the homemaker to run his House. Nursing is kept to a mini mum mrs. Gagnon said. If one of the family has casts on an or leg or both the homemaker is responsible for bathing him. Or if the Mother is taking medication it is up to the homemaker to ensure she swallows the pills one at a time and at the prescribed intervals. Theoretically the program is available to any woman Over 18 years of age with a it s a woman s is a directory of women s organizations serving As a ready reference to their officers and activities through out the greater Winnipeg area. They should be submitted to woman s world Winnipeg free press 300 cat Iron Street Winnipeg 2 by the copy deadline monday september 22nd. 1969. Grade 9 education. However mrs. Gagnon definitely pre fers to enrol women Over 30. They can have All the training in the world but if they Don t like housework they will not be Good Home makers. Older women Gener ally have families of their own and have spent considerable time in the House. Also homemakers often go into troubled families where there is a divorce or separa Tion brewing. This is not a Good atmosphere for Young another aspect is that few women lying in a Hospital bed like the thought of a Young girl looking after their to mention their husbands. Even after awarding certificates the association has ample Opportunity to Check up on its homemakers. During the homemaker s first week on a new Case the supervisor May phone or drop in at any time. Also the Agency checks the family once a Case is closed to discover what if anything went wrong. Prior to this the women have already spent nearly a month of their course on pro Bation working in households under close supervision. Mrs. Gagnon who set up the homemaker service when she first joined the Agency 11 years ago feels there Are Sev eral immediate advantages to the diploma course. Obviously it gives the Agency a better Chance to screen the applicants. Previously it had Only a woman s experience and the results of a two hour interview and a two week training period As a guide. Most important mrs. Gagnon says the homemaker with a certificate finds it much easier to integrate her self in the family. She has Learned to respect and accept whatever family situation she discovers realizing it can not be changed in two or three weeks. Each homemaker works alongside a social worker also assigned to the family and the Agency found in the past that untrained women sometimes tried to influence the social worker believing their first hand knowledge of the family gave them the upper hand. Also the course provides housewives with a marketable skill. Mrs. Gagnon mentioned one woman who armed with her diploma had found a Job in Peru. On the other hand a Good course May provide employ ment problems. Mrs. G a g n o n s department the largest homemaker service in Montreal now hires Only those homemakers with a diploma. However Cost of the service to each family ranges from nothing to a Day so the resultant Lack of funds severely limits the number of women she can employ. Understandably women will not take the course if they know there will not be a Job waiting for them and because of a problem with references homemakers find it difficult to operate independently. Montreal is particularly handicapped. Not Only Are there several agencies handling each religious group but they Are also divided by Lan Guage. This puts a great Strain on resources of the provincial government and Federated Appeal of greater Montreal. However the demand for services such As homemakers is so great that plans Are under Way to group the Agen cies into a Central authority. Then mrs. Gagnon and her Peers can begin catching up with Toronto and that City s More than 200 homemakers. I thing then they in turn Are not children and Many of them Over protective with the child work hard at the ther because they have the Privi apis. Pam Miller.
