Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 28, 1970, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press wednesday january 28. 1970 Vancouver losing liar rum Jungle by Ron Sudlow Vancouver up Gas town a waterfront rectangle containing the 14 blocks of Vancouver s Jungle for drunks and junkies is starting to get the Monkey off its Back. Gas town is shedding its Mantle of dust and deterioration. Its bras work is being polished and its Marble floors and brickwork Are being and Sand blasted. And it is starting to reveal the character and history of a Section of the original Vancou ver when Jack Deighton an enterprising f r a s e r River Steamboat Pilot brought his barrel of watered Down Hooch to Start the area s first hotel. Although the area was officially known As Granville it was named Gas town after Gassy Jack Deighton so dubbed by his patrons be cause he was never at a loss for words. And Vancouver fanned out from Gassy Jack s barrel but the waterfront area that bore name went from a Boom to the booze and bums. It be came a skid Road Section four blocks North of the Core. Now the pendulum is Start ing to swing the other More and More merchants Are using the old buildings to re create the flavor and Char Acter of the .1880s and relieve today s hangover. Warehouses and flophouse have become boutiques and discotheques.
